South Africa back on the Covid red list on 21:24 - Nov 25 by Lord_Lucan | Slightly off topic but I've had my anti vaxing Polish sparky in tonight and he is 100% adamant that he isn't getting a jab and nor is his wife. He is concerned that eventually sites where he works will insist on workers being jabbed. He doesn't want to be jabbed because he feels that not enough testing has been done. I'm double jabbed and going for my booster on Sunday so I'm with the vax program but I must admit, I agree that he should be able to decide if he does or does not take the jab. |
100% he should. But 100% that should not be without consequence.

Agreed, entirely the right decision to red list them that quickly, whether it will be enough we will only know in a few weeks. A bit more information out this morning, it seems the R in Gauteng is now at 2 due to this variant and that's with measures in place which were keeping the R very low over the last few weeks and they were having minimum cases. This is not ideal. Also seem the red list is already too small. Israel have reported a case in someone returning from Malawi which isn't on the red list. SB [Post edited 26 Nov 2021 9:44]

Delta was delayed purely because Boris had a trade deal going down and wanted to go over there and then shout it from the rooftop. 100% definite info.

Such bullshat phrases like freedom day (see also Brexit) diverts arrention away from treating it seriously. When we had 'freedom day' it was almost a perception of COVID being done and dusted. I'll leave it there. [Post edited 26 Nov 2021 11:27]

As the bloke from the WHO just said on the BBC it's totally wrong for some countries to be giving out booster jabs while other countries haven't had 1st or 2nd. It's time for countries to stop the booster program ?

It is wrong, but I'm not sure cancelling booster programmes is the answer, as these are populations whose protection is waning and so also require immunisation. There needs to be a greater international effort to provide more vaccine doses to poorer countries irrespective of booster programmes. There is nothing stopping this other than money and the will to do it.

Didn't they dally with Delta because Johnson was supposed to be going to India to try and salvage something out of Brexit? That may explain the difference.

According to your interpretation of the science. Having the vaccine still protects children from possible issues with covid and from long covid. Covid was the 5th largest killer of children in the US last year before you even consider long covid and the impact of lost schooling. Furthermore, there are a lot of lies circulating around myocarditis whereby people claim it's a risk but the risk is actually tiny and getting covid presents a far larger risk of myocarditis than having the vaccine. As it stands, not a single child has died of myocarditis after the vaccine. Are you standing by your nonsense that covid will be like the common cold in a few months given the news of the emerging new variant? SB

Although the argument seemed to be more about capacity to produce rather than money, the world can only produce x amount and yes new manufacturing facilities have/are being built but it's not a simple process. Plus where countries are building them, these currently are often used to predominately fulfil booster contracts. If you take the fact some immunity is better then no immunity, add-in in 6 -8 months its feasible another booster campaign is required would those again take priority over a 1st/2nd jabs for poorer countries, the cycle has to be broken at some stage, which is where that stop the boosters now seem to come from. I'm not sure I really understand where you would stop/start the booster campaign but if the world requires a 1st jab it does seem sensible the rich countries injecting boosters stop and give it to the poorer countries. However the point was also made South Africa probably isn't the best example as they have loads vaccines in stock it's simply the arms they lack with uptake of it only in the low 20% .

The WHO don't agree with you, sorry. As a matter of global equity, as long as many parts of the world are facing extreme vaccine shortages, countries that have achieved high vaccine coverage in their high-risk populations should prioritize global sharing of COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX facility before proceeding to vaccination of children and adolescents who are at low risk for severe disease. But you know best, yeah?

Where in that passage does it say that children do not need vaccines? It is quite clear from that paragraph that there is intent to eventually vaccinate children and adolescents.

You've cherry picked the bit of the statement which suits your narrative. Why didn't you post the whole thing or even just the first bit: "Countries should consider the individual and population benefits of immunising children and adolescents in their specific epidemiological and social context when developing their COVID-19 immunisation policies and programs." "There are benefits of vaccinating children and adolescents that go beyond the direct health benefits. Vaccination that decreases COVID transmission in this age group may reduce transmission from children and adolescents to older adults, and may help reduce the need for mitigation measures in schools. Minimizing disruptions to education for children and maintenance of their overall well-being, health and safety are important considerations." What is your objection to vaccination children given C19 was the 5th largest killer of children in the US last year? Children do die of covid unfortunately, even if it's a small number. The risk from covid for a child is far higher than the risk of the vaccine, the numbers and studies clearly show this and that is before we discuss long covid and social and psychological impacts. The actual highest cause of deaths in children is accidents so if you are following the risk-based path that you claim you should probably keep them in their rooms all the time. SB

I'm only going on what the WHO rep said on the BBC earlier and he never said stop giving 1st and 2nd jabs to your population he said they wanted the booster programs stopped and those vaccines to be given to poorer countries. Although the point was made South Africa doesn't have a shortage of vaccine supplies, actually the opposite, it's a lack of people coming forward for the vaccine which is the problem there

I think the moral question is should we vaccinate children before those in older or more vulnerable groups are given even one jab.
