One transfer window. I've asked a couple of times now and no-one's answered. 15:49 - Dec 2 with 6660 views | The_Flashing_Smile | Can anyone name a few managers who came into a club that's been failing for years and turned them round in just one transfer window? I remember the days we used to think 2 or 3 windows were fair. Did anyone genuinely think EVERY signing would work out this summer? When you go through what Cook has signed, they seem more hit than miss I'd say. Mick obviously stopped the rot briefly when he came in, and pulled us away from relegation. Ultimately, over the course of his tenure, we were treading water really. We weren't moving forward. Are there any more/better? I genuinely don't know and am genuinely interested (rather than looking for abuse, so try to be kind).

Here's one for you - find me a manager who has done as badly as Cook with a side on the verge of the play offs, and then subsequently as title favourites and turned it round afterwards |
The answer is actually Paul Cook, let’s this pick this up again in Feb.

The answer is actually dozens of currently active managers, because it's incredibly common for new managers to immediately improve their new club's league position.

You obviously know more than Man u fans whose opinion was "three years of excuses and it's still crap ... ta-ra Fergie" You asked for examples how about. 89/90 season under John Duncan we finished 9th. 90/91 season under John Lyall we finished 14th. [Post edited 2 Dec 2021 22:16]

Nuno took over a Wolves team that had finished 14th and 15th the 2 season prior. They won the league with 99 points and won 15 of their first 20 games. That meet your extremely specific criteria?

I concur with all you say. Forget last season. Those players downed tools because they knew they would be shown the door at the end of the season - something 99.99% of fans wanted to see happen. PC’s new squad isn’t firing on all cylinders. The players brought in would be well aware of what was required of them and where we are currently at. All were happy to have signed, many knowing what PC’s preferred system is all about. Are they all delivering? No, they are not! It’s easy to point the point at the manager . But players too, must take their share of responsibility and up their own games. Once again on Wednesday night , having been given another opportunity to show Cook he needs to consider them for the first team , they failed , big time. If some of these players can’t produce the goods their previous stats , and they themselves promise then they’ll get moved out and other players will be brought in. It won’t be Demolition Man again in January ( Cooks 2nd window), but I can see 2-3 coming in and going out, and Paul Cook won’t be one of them and rightly so!

Yes PC was already here , but his inherited squad went from a wonderful run of a 3 game win to absolute zero once the take over was announced and those players knew they’d be on their way . This is a squad that did absolutely nothing in three years under PL! Wigan’s “ new” manager had none of that to contend with . He had a squad that knew him and his ways and were “on board“. Totally different situations.

Crikey you are like a stuck record. Paul Cook has been a complete disaster from the day he came through the door, his coaching team are poor and most managers who perform as badly as he has would have been gone weeks ago. He doesn't even offer any excuses as to why they the performances are so poor either. I agree it looks like he will be here in January, so he can consider himself a lucky man as currently he is nowhere near being good enough. I go every week hoping for a win and good performance, to date I have seen that once at Portman Road under him verses a very poor Doncaster. To reference one of your statements regarding Wigan who knew the manager, ways and were on board, how many knew Cook, played for him before, and are on board? Totally similar situations.

And it's back to all being the players' fault. How unlucky is Cook that he's had two squads to work with and they've all just let him down. Teflon Paul really is unfortunate, he's doing everything right except getting the players to play for him. More players it is then, at least that opens up gelling as an excuse again.

You are aware that Wigan also signed like 17 players in the summer, so Richardson knowing last year's squad is rather irrelevant.

So many excuses among our fan base right now. I have problem at all with people still supporting Cook, much less with people saying its too soon to make a change (I think he gets the next month fwiw) , but ffs people at least apply some constructive criticism.

I've said several times (and in the OP) "turned the club around". And even said explicitly "going up a few league places initially isn't turning the club around." It needs to be big improvement and the start of sustained improvement. I don't know why this is difficult to grasp.

We were 7th when Cook took over. All people who are unhappy at the start of this season want is for us to be at the top end of the league, which is literally an improvement of a few places

To be fair, it's Cook's job to motivate those players. But I agree, he should get another window to replace the players that didn't quite work out (for whatever reason). The successful managers mentioned in this thread all got a second window to do just that, so I don't see why Cook should be any different.

You'd think Cook had taken on Blackpool post Oystons, not a fairly stable but underperforming club at the top end of league one.

Because all the successful managers earned their 2nd window - it's how management usually works, if you do well, you get more help to continue doing well.

Fair enough, I want sustained long-term improvement. I get why people are unhappy... but I also think the "Cook out" stuff is premature, particularly when he's only had one window. Lambert had 5 windows before he got the boot.
