McGreal in charge for now on 10:42 - Dec 6 with 1860 views | itfcsuth | Doesn't fill you with confidence going in to our biggest month of the season. A team of John McGreal, Rene Gilmartin, Kieron Dyer & Carl Putney (academy GK coach). I wish JM & co. the best of luck though, and obviously hope they have some success. Let's see how this plays out. Assume the decision was made pre Barrow then and the 'working with the under 23s' was all a ruse.

No time-scale on it though so could just be that they feel 'interim' sounds more stable than caretaker. Or maybe he has been told go out and win the next few games and lets see what happens!

That was my feeling at the time to be honest. A natural contingency plan in place and thought it was confirmed as much when Phil mentioned in his Cook Sacked report that McGreal wasn't Cook's appointment....

That's a great point actually, hadn't thought about that. Either that or the owners expect the search to last for more than just a game, and want the ideal set up for McGreal in the meantime.

Or perhaps they wanted to install McGreal as Cook's Assistant and the latter refused, leading to a row and his sacking. Or he was hired to work with the U23s and when the dismal Barrow game caused the Board to act, he was the best candidate to take over, given Dyer's illness, Klug's well-known reluctance and the lack of an Assistant to step in. Lots of possible scenarios.

Curious way to approach it though. If it was planned all along why not just wait until this morning to announce JM?

I thought that too but you've got a serious lack of first team coaching options there to see you through a period longer than a couple of games. Gilmartin is a recently retired goalkeeper. I guess McGreal is a 4-2-3-1 man so nothing major is going to be changing overnight and it'll be tweaks rather than trying to re-invent the wheel.

Agreed. Either they're waiting for someone in particular, or they think it's worth letting McGreal have a proper shot at it.

Well when you sack 18 coaches, it's probably a good idea to bring in more than one to replace them, even if on a temporary basis!

Given his short time back at the club, who does he know well enough to work with as an Assistant?

A caretaker team would generally just be whoever you could cobble together for a few games, though - this feels like they think it may take a while to find the next man.

Except we need something which works properly at a critical stage of the season, probably determining whether we can reach the playoffs or not. With three difficult games in eleven days (starting tomorrow), we haven't got time to do things half-arsedly and throw away points which may prove vital later. Perhaps a level of taking things seriously we are not used to?

The timing makes sense with the run of games coming up. Surely you would think that with Ashton being proactive, they would already have a short-list of potentials in place? McGreal would have been the contingency but hopefully they have a recruitment plan for the new person with a target for time-scale.

I’m guessing because then he would be seen as the club’s choice. This way, both McGreal and the club get a free hit and if it doesn’t work out the next manager will always look like the plan. But that’s OK for me. It would be great if McGreal works out but we probably need some time to see who is available or could be available too.

However, if they are after someone who is already in a job, they wouldn't be able to make an approach without permission from said target's current club - which would inevitably leak out. Thus it might be the case that they have identified candidates, but are only now able to initiate the formal negotiation proccess.

True, plus the negotiations on fees etc. I would think that most of the time, the candidates are aware of the interest and the clubs would have a good idea as to whether to pursue them or not..... It will certainly be an interesting week
