just goes to show how good Cook should have been for us and its a shock that he couldn't get it right.

Ashton and co really need to pull this one out of the bag

More shameful than the Bullard, Chopra, Taylor etc contingent?

Collectively they were, individually Bullard, Taylor and Chopra plumbed the depths, I grant you.

Not sulking ? Chambo was frothing on twitter when Cook was sacked, says to me the definition of unprofessional

It says Chambers was annoyed at the way he was released and the things that were said at that time, nothing more.

Is the argument here that it was literally impossible for a manager to motivate Luke Chambers to give his best for Ipswich Town? Absolutely bizarre contention.

Intimates to me he has the potential to be plenty sulky, Chambo was past it as were others, I would say a combination of past it, going through the motions/wanting out, not willing or keen to go the extra mile were the problems Cook faced last season, with no window to change it.

Perhaps non of us "Experts" really know what we want of our team. Unless you are Manchester City you don't seem to be able to have both an attractive style of play and get results. The league we are in probably is more suited to a team grinding out results rather than having a load of ball players who go AWOL when the chips are down. As for the guy who gets the Managers job you only have to look at Man Utd to see that since Sir Alex departed no one has come close to making United into a team. Even Sir Alex wasn't successful straight away. Just like Sir Bobby at ITFC. But these are different times, the current owners want results now, not tomorrow or next week, month, year. Whether they get what they want will come down to getting the right man in and giving him another slice of the huge wedge they supposedly have available.

Cook was given 20 league games with his new squad : ridiculously short period of time. I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt us …. as it usually appears too at this Club .

We’ve become a hire & fire, knee jerk Club. Where’s the patience gone?

Hire and Fire club? Ridiculous. We only gave Hurst 15 games, do you think we didn't give him sufficient time too?

We've had 2 managers EVER with tenures less than a full season, and Cook had 46 games so he was most of the way to a full seasons worth of games. He showed he was not taking the club forward in that time. In fact we're worse off league wise than Lambert ever had us.

When he took over we were 8th, we finished 9th - hardly massively backwards.

No, we were 7th and only 2 points from the playoffs with games in hand on most of those above us when he came in

We then won 2 of his first 13 to drop to 12th, 7 points adrift before a couple of wins in the final 3 dead rubbers closed it a bit, but still down in 9th

Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

It's literally the manager's main job to build that kind of buy in.

I don't think it does. The 'new dawn' has only served to raise expectations.

If they don't get the right man, he'll get months only before the atmosphere in Portman Road goes and we've got booing at half time and full time again.

I think it will be apathy towards the manager and anger aimed at Ashton. The argument will quickly turn to Gamechanger are alright but Ashton is the problem, a but like Evans with Clegg in the early stages of the reign of terror until it was found out Clegg was only acting on Evans instruction, then Milne, then O'Neil became the enemy before the smatters of Evans out started towards the end of 2019. I firmly believe that Gamechanger made the call to sack Cook and have attempted to bring a name in, but have failed to do so, probably not really grasping how far down the pecking order we really are and the likes of Terry will laugh them off when approached. I think they were expecting much more bang for their buck, but in 2021 spending a few million quid on a football team in one window won't achieve you overnight success. It needs long-term planning and stead investment and development over seasons. The issue is they are being pushed by a pension fund whose only interest is profit and not football who won't be happy the Gamechanger group will have lost them £60million in a year.

That's because he was told he was part of the setup and then told he was sacked within weeks. Cook's biggest mistake was the bomb squad myth. We needed a few more players if you had a squad with Holy, Chambers, Edmondson, Wilson, Woolfie, Donancien, Young, Kenlock, Bishop, Downes, Dozzell, Burns, Aluko, Bonne, Norwood, and Jackson you would make top5 of this league minimum. It didn't need a sledgehammer but he made them the scapegoats for the failure. Now we're in a situation where we are looking like Walton, Bonne, Norwood, Piggot and Fraiser are already off and it's not even January yet. It's chaos and not good for the club.

That option is probably off the table quite early. Probably as early as those botched-double-training sessions in March, I'd say.

Maybe even after Gillingham, to be honest. As soon as Cook decided the best option wasn't adapting to cope with the group's flaws, but attempting, three quarters of the way through the season, to whip them into the shape he thought they should be, then I think the logic of the next few months was already set.

Cook's 3 previous promotions were all in his second season at the club concerned. He would no doubt argue that he should have been given more time, but in his last 9 games Town seemed to be regressing or stagnating into a mid table team & with the resources he was given, he should have been doing better. The nagging fear is that Richardson was hugely responsible for Cook's past success & his achievements so far with a Wigan squad with 17 new players acquired far more cheaply is testament to that. They looked so much more organised than Town for most of Saturday's game.

If that is how you wish to look at it.

We finished 5 points off the play-offs with an average of spot on 1.5 ppg. When Cook took charge we got 19 points from 16 games at a ppg of 1.19.

Before he arrived our ppg was 1.67. He reduced our ppg by nearly 0.5 ppg.

Whether we were 8th or not is irrelevant if we were only a point or two off the play-offs. Yes, it wasn't good enough or he wouldn't have arrived but he took us massively backwards that season and has taken us even further backwards this.

Our current ppg for this season when he left was 1.35. In his last 6 matches it was 1.17. We were going backwards. The statistics support what was obvious from watching the team.

Gill’s record was 3 ppg. That makes him the best manager ever, doesn’t it? McGreal is on 0.5 ppg. Surely that proves he is useless and has to go. Rubbish you will rightly cry. So what is an acceptable sample size with somebody else’s players? 5 games,10 games? 16?Are we bothering with the fact that 10 of the last 16 games were away?

It’s interesting that some wish to discount the last three dead rubber games. Interesting that nobody wants to discount the first game surrender four days in when you’d think the players would want to impress. You can use stats to prove most things, particularly if you have an agenda.

Are we interested that last seasons mob couldn’t manage more than 45 mins without oxygen? Maybe, just maybe that’s why Cook tried extra training sessions? Or did Cook try it just to hack them off? Do we actually know why the club changed its mind re Chambers?

Cook deserved what he got for this season and made mistakes last, but last seasons squad should not be regarded with anything but disdain in my view. Best squad in the league? Yeah, right.

If Cook thought extra training sessions in Late March, 35 games into the season, were somehow going to magic extra stamina into his players then he's an idiot.

It was pretty widely reported at the time that the double sessions were intensity work, not tactical work. Cook said as much:

https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town/paul-cook-on-ipswich-town-training-785

I don't actually think Cook's stupid and I presume the purpose of the double sessions was to test and motivate, rather than actually to build fitness.

Think that was at the end of a run where we had had midweek games for 9 consecutive weeks and our fitness coach had been sacked a few months earlier and we had Matt Gill doing the warm ups pregame

Lest we forget, an awful lot of the people who are crying about Cook's departure thought that Lambert 'just got us', improved our performances(whilst taking us from 'could stay up' to 'comfortably relegated by March')and made a massive banner for him.

They probably played a large part in convincing Marcus Evans that he deserved a five year contract.

Not sure why you introduce a manager who managed us twice aside from further deliberate obfuscation.

How many seasons should a manager be allowed to fail before he is deemed to not be good enough? Clearly you would have been happy for Hurst to have had at least into his second season. Was Lambert given long enough?

It is just so obvious that Cook was failing, I really don't get it. He was not caretaker manager. He was allowed to make every decision he wanted to and he was an utter disaster. If he gets another job and leads his new team to success, I will hold my hands up but I think he clearly and obviously failed so badly he will struggle to get another job at this level. His career is on a distinct downward turn. You don't need 3 seasons before making that obvious.

We looked pretty good to me through all of September and October, 2 months of play off form.

It was the next 5 league games which did for him, losing 2 against the best side in the league, and Sunderland away., winning 2 and drawing 1 which did for him bizarrely.

We looked good in approximately 1 in every 6 of his matches. That is not good enough regardless if 2 of them happen to come within a few weeks of each other.

"2 months of play off form". That's enough for you to ignore months and months of lower league/relegation form?

A full season of play off form would likely not get us promoted. We should be aiming for a full season of automatic promotion form and if we can't manage that even for a few weeks it is not good enough!
