Dubai, Playground Of The Rich On BBC2. 21:28 - Jan 3 with 4724 views | StochesStotasBlewe | Hideous, ostentatious looking place. Give me a rustic shack on a Greek island beach any day.
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Vegas is a magical place. Even if you’re not a gambler.

Dubai, Playground Of The Rich On BBC2. on 21:30 - Jan 3 by factual_blue | Spent a day or two there as part of a Persian Gulf cruise. One of the hotels had an ATM that dispensed gold bars. Place was full of dodgy Russians. |
Out of interest how do you determine that Russians living in Dubai are dodgy? Surely more likely some are, some aren’t. Pretty typical of all nationalities wouldn’t you say?

Just to add, they clearly approached the most vacuous people they could, a lot of the stuff about Dubai being ostentatious is very true, but it's like a documentary of Suffolk showcasing us as all Brian's from Melton.

Dubai, Playground Of The Rich On BBC2. on 12:11 - Jan 4 with 1160 views | PrideOfTheEast | Dubai just sums up the part of modern society that is obsessively materialistic. There are a couple of facets to it: 1) the wealthy trader (they call themselves financiers) whom go there because they won't be paying tax. Their spouses are then generally the materialistic types who waltz around with a handbag that costs more than their staff will ever earn. 2) Nowadays wannabe (but failed) footballer types and a sea of young wannabe social media influencers who have not a lot to their name but presumably 1 in a big number make a few quid. 3) Escorts. It's incredible how many young women from all over the world are there for this, or end up there for this. Strange place. Wouldn't live there for millions. [Post edited 4 Jan 2022 12:14]

Dubai, Playground Of The Rich On BBC2. on 12:32 - Jan 4 with 1105 views | hatch | Went to Dubai for the second time back in November. Have friends who live out there now so went to some lovely restaurants and bars and the weather was good. I know it’s not for everyone and that’s clear from this thread but I’ll stick my head above the parapet and say that I enjoy it. I get as irritated by ‘new money’/instagrammers/showy visitors to Dubai but take that with a pinch of salt and there are some nice people out there too. I agree that the divide between rich and poor highlighted by the BBC show isn’t nice and it’s not a sustainable place to develop given the need for A/C (and a indoor ski slope hardly helps). But I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there and would go again. Stayed on a blow up bed in my friends apartment to save money to enjoy some lovely brunches with good music. I equally enjoy staying in hostels in European cities, SE Asia and Africa - so it’s not about the flaunting of cash for me etc. (I haven’t got enough to flaunt)

Strange how these influencers find it almost impossible to influence any form of charitable generosity say for instance giving £200 to a homeless charity rather than on a bottle of plonk or similar?

....you can go to Vegas, eat, drink, shows, gamble, sunbath, etc, etc and still go to the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, Mt Charleston etc. Add in the LV Raiders and the Golden Knights for some sport. Whatever you want really.

Agreed I have been Dubai too although a few years ago now and enjoyed it plenty of good people out there, some really good restaurants, good brunch. Of course you get the instagrammers but you get them if you go Brentwood or London. I too would go again now i have kids as looks to have decent hotels for kids with pools etc.

Cloud seeding happens more frequently than ever these days, I was chatting with one of my customers last year and he had been in Dubai for ten years and came home because he kept getting chest infections, the Doctor said it was because they are seeding 5-6 times a year now as opposed to once a year. Goes unreported, but clearly an issue.

Dubai, Playground Of The Rich On BBC2. on 15:59 - Jan 4 with 929 views | Dubai_Blue | If you keep away from the glitzy beach areas where all the "TOWIE" wannabees hang out then you can find some really decent bars and restaurants where the more normal go. It is still a hugely fake place though
Dubai, Playground Of The Rich On BBC2. on 17:55 - Jan 4 with 866 views | swede | I found the programme utterly sickening. Obnoxious people who think nothing of paying £80,000 for a private jet to fly them to their other home, yet pay their Filipino servants £300 per month. It is just repulsive for someone to spend £4 million on shoes and handbags while so many in the world are starving. I hope there is a special place in hell for such selfish people.

3) Escorts. It's incredible how many young women from all over the world are there for this, or end up there for this. few mates went out there 2/3 years back, and these girls by the hotel pool (fake as you like) were bragging they have sugar daddies that hand them their credit cards to spend as they wish.... just a sad story all round. the old boy getting fleeced, the girls thinking thats some sort of decent life.

If it wasn’t for the human rights issues in these middles eastern countries I could quite happily live there. I have a few friends who do and love it. But then I am quite materialistic. Awkward to get back for games though ðŸ¤£ðŸ¤£âš½ï¸ Vegas on the other hand…nah! New York every day
