My first Ipswich Team on 00:23 - Jan 21 by Churchman | I presume it’s season 1968/69, not least because Crawford didn’t play in the top flight for too long in that final ITFC spell. I could look it up, which would be cheating, so I’ll guess Arsenal away? |
Right season, wrong game.

Interesting. Four centre backs in the starting eleven. There must surely have been a couple of injuries to midfielders.

My first Ipswich Team on 09:12 - Jan 21 by PhilTWTD | If I remember rightly our report was written by a serviceman who may well have been on the same coach as you. Interesting first game! Town 2 - 1 A Vladikavkaz 23rd Feb 2002 18:17Town won the charity match against Alania Vladikavkaz 2-1, a game played in the warm afternoon sunshine at Dhekelia Army base, Cyprus. The Blues' goals came from Finidi George and Pablo Couñago. 0 |
Maybe, I have a clipping from the camp newspaper somewhere at home. I was again very fortunate as I got to meet and watch my national team Northern Ireland a couple of weeks before. They used the fields at Episkopi barracks for training, and they played Poland in Limassol (with only around 100 fans watching) as the Polish pitches were frozen.
My first Ipswich Team on 19:15 - Jan 21 with 1009 views | azuremerlangus | Ipswich v Wolves 29/12/79 22,333 (+1) Paul Cooper George Burley Mick Mills Frans Thijssen Russell Osman Terry Butcher John Wark Arnold Muhren Paul Mariner Alan Brazil Eric Gates This wasn’t my first match but I can clearly remember Butcher scoring with a driving/diving header from a corner in front of the Churchmens during the 2nd half. I’d been to a few others earlier in the season, but I cannot remember which ones as I used to sneak in at HT when the turnstiles were opened up to see the second half for free. Lack of money was certainly factor but my dad wasn’t up for taking me and none of my friends at the time went. So I initially went down to the ground, sat in Alderman park and just savoured the noise coming from the stands - during HT the turnstiles got opened up, I mustered the courage to wander in (hence the +1 above) and the rest, as they say is history. My memory is very sketchy about which one was the first but I definitely done this routine for at least 4 games before getting the funds together to see a full match, and the FA cup 5th v Chester was one I paid to see (when a certain Ian Rush scored for them) that season. Anyway, which ever match was first I was spoilt with that line-up. [Post edited 21 Jan 2022 22:40]

That was a fairly standard team from that season (99/00). Wright Wilnis - McGreal - Mowbray - Venus - Clapham Scowcroft - Holland - Magilton Johnson - Naylor Fab and Clapham were wing backs, Scowie often played in midfield and Naylor was a few years away from converting to CB. Yes, all true. I was a season ticket holder then (and long before or after). Old age getting to me, I fear. I still want to know whether you're Cuthbert, Dibble or Grubb though.

Is that Barnsley in August 99 - first home game of the season? If not, how many times did we score 6 that season!? Barnsley was my first game too I think, just got back from a week up Yarmouth way and I remember asking my mum and dad where we were going. Absolutely pumped! Man, I miss those days....

The Barnsley 6-1 wasn’t the first home game of 1999-2000… we beat Forest 3-1 and Bolton 1-0 in the league before that game, as well as a league cup game against Brentford.

Grrr, fair play and a great question. I racked my brain and couldn’t get past Arsenal or Spurs. Yes, Man City we’re good in those days. As avid Leicester supporters, my father in law and brother in law went to the 1969 Cup Final against them so I should have at least thought of them.

Of course. With Harbey and Lowe in the team, it would have to be the next season. Reading, maybe? Edit; Or possibly Oldham, although the goals were from Brennan and Lowe. [Post edited 22 Jan 2022 10:32]

'86, that would have been - the first game after relegation. Cooper, Zondervan, McCall, Atkins, Dozzell, Cranson, Gleghorn, Brennan, D'Avray, Deehan, Wilson. Sub: Cole. Wilson scored the goal.

The gates didn’t improve. In the first half of the 91/92 promotion season, quite a few of the attendances were under 10,000. The first game of the season against Port Vale, it was 8,937. Years of mediocrity led to a lot of apathy at that time. Given how awful we’ve been for much of the past 20 years it’s quite remarkable that crowds have held up as much as they have.

That’s the one! That must have been Cooper’s last season then.
