Are things getting worse? 20:50 - Feb 6 with 7733 views | Chocorange | Rotherham fan on the pitch hits Pell yesterday Leicester fan today at Forest. Games being halted for racist comments one last week in league 1 , involving Akinfenwa and MK Dons fans then another yesterday at Morecambe v Bolton, Morecambe were also involved in an incident earlier in the season. What should be done?

Are things getting worse? on 23:17 - Feb 6 by Trequartista | Seems to be happening more often. Do we know if any of the perpetrators have been vaccinated? |
You have to be careful with phrases like 'seems to be happening more often'. There have certainly been some very visible instances of late, but how do the numbers compare with previous seasons..? If there is an increase, how stark is it..? And increase in what exactly..? Is the bloke who ran on the pitch and attacked the Forest players recorded differently as a harmless streaker in crime stats, or both lumped in with pitch encroachment? Follow FSA Faircop and see how shockingly draconian the policing of football fans is. One that sticks out is the supporter ejected from a ground and slapped with an FBO for throwing projectiles; turns out he'd actually thrown a pack of sweets down on the concourse in anger... I'm always wary of hearing the authorities use terms like 'returning to the dark days of football hooliganism'. Are we really..? Or is it a useful and evocative tool to use to maintain control and power..? Will these recent occurrences be blown out of all proportion in order to justify watering down the outcomes of the Fan Led Review..? Sorry Mr/Mrs Football Supporter, you can't be trusted with a greater say in the governance of football...

Are things getting worse? on 23:55 - Feb 6 by monytowbray | Mate I saw lastnight who’s a Lincoln supporter made a valid point as we were talking about similar, a take I had not considered… With football being very much a part of British cultural identity it has people from all walks of life going. With that, things that happen in football culture tend to be a reflection of the world outside. There’s a mix of societal frustration and normalised bigotry coming out at games as we continue to starve society of basic comforts and normalise bigotry. Jeremy Corbyn though. |
I think there's something in it. Not just in racist attitudes being reflected at the very top, for instance, but also that these things tend to rise up in football when there's general unrest in the population. A nation of relatively unhappy people - we're poorer than we've been in a long time, there's a general downward trend in quality of life, we''ve been 'locked up' for the best part of 18 months, there's political unrest and a (politically) a huge divide in the country... it's a powder keg. It can't be a coincidence that the last time football hooliganism was particularly bad was in the 80s when we had Poll Tax riots, a deep recession followed by inflation, high unemployment for much of the decade etc.

Are things getting worse? on 12:37 - Feb 7 by monytowbray | I’d argue there is an ongoing battle of finances for the middle class now too. I’m comfortable, in my mid 30s earning around a quarter more than the average salary of said age group, but I largely don’t care for traditional aspirations like flash cars, the latest tech and Ikea trips. For those that do, I expect being on the average salary or lower prices folks out of things that would have been easily reachable even before the 2008 crash. And that’s before factoring in stuff like home ownership. I guess what I’m trying to say is financial woes are hitting people who can afford to go to football. In fact I’d be interested how many go without to afford it and/or dread renewal date/monthly DDs. I should add I don’t think films that glorify football violence and toxic masculinity such as Football Factory, Green Street, etc have helped. [Post edited 7 Feb 2022 12:38]

When the middle class get squeezed, we're not used to it, so we're probably grumpier about it. My wife and i are doing ok but have a massive mortgage. If interest rates go up by much we may have to move. Stressful.

The fact you think that shopping at Ikea is "aspirational" would suggest that you are somewhat out of touch with society and therefore not really in a position to comment on it.

To be fair I an talking in generalisations of typical middle class comforts like “being able to afford stuff when you need it” and not specific examples. If that’s the best counter point you’ve got then I fear you may have missed the point.

I hope it wakes people up a bit when they realise their struggles are a drop in the ocean vs people for example using food banks and working full time. Sadly, based on the HANG ON THAT’S ALL YOU GET TO LIVE ON WITH BENEFITS reaction the country generally had at the start of COVID vs what has been done to address it (or even fight to address it) doesn’t fill me with hope.

Are things getting worse? on 15:28 - Feb 7 with 2739 views | HARRY10 | Two incidents is hardly much (plus Villa fan previously), when considered against the total number of fans, over a season. Yes, a toot of Charlie is undoubtedly a factor. Previously it was not so readily available to the 'not too bright. Although it is a criminal offence to try to enter a football ground when intoxicated - it is not when having taken drugs. Would the police want all the hassle of testing fans entering a ground ? These things come and go, just as with moped crime and clowns scaring people. Not only a lifetime ban, but a fair bit of community service as well. . Remind others what the scrote will be doing on the next Saturdays for six months. What annoys me is that cretins like this most likely see themselves as 'heroes', rather than cnts who are spoiling things for tens of thousands of others. However, no one died, or was hurt so it is one of these idiotic acts that happen occasionally. Just as with those saddoes dressed in costume clambering onto buildings because they were a sh it dads.

Are things getting worse? on 15:54 - Feb 7 with 2697 views | ArnieM | Not that I condone these mindless acts by certain sections of fans at all, but players should also take some responsibility for their actions on the pitch. I’m thinking especially of the goading of rival fans when a player has scored,…. It’s often a very emotion charged atmosphere at these games, and if a player scores and “ celebrates” in front of rival fans, there’s always going to be one idiot or more that can’t take it and in a split second have jumped the wall onto the pitch as a reaction to the goading…. It’s not good from any view point really is it.

How much does a gram of charlie cost these days? Has the price dropped so much that just about everyone can afford it, on top of travel, match ticket and several pints of a Saturday?

Don't get me wrong Jeera, I'm sure a lot of the societal problems we face today can be directly blamed on Love Island and big brother before it. I have to confess, that like all of us, when bubbles was kicked out of the big brother house in the late 90,s I suffered. It was a struggle then not to being this anxiety with me to the next Town match

I dunno, that film was the start of seeing the Stone Island wannabes go from blokes of drinking age to gangs of 12 year olds. What was the Norwich one called again we all recently laughed at in the last decade? They all wandered past me once when I was working in Scum and I was taller than most of them lol.
