Was before my time following Ipswich, but keen to hear what Town fans thought of him? I've just met him (virtually) and had a great chat about his time with Ipswich. Top bloke.
Schmeichal threw up at the David Busst incident, for the Whelan one he was at the other end of the pitch.
I was on the front row of the North Stand and the incident happened right in front of me, his foot was pointing at 90 degrees to the rest of his leg, which was pretty grim.
Whelan will always be remembered for his two towering headers in his first two games, away at Southend and at home to Wolves, both of which we then went on to win by very late Neil Thompson goals (cut in and shot at Southend, penalty against Wolves).

I was towards the front of the Pioneer Stand at NS end, got a good (bad) view of it and his foot was the wrong way round. It was a pass the bucket job. Poor bloke; strangely enough he was in agony.
Back to the question, he made his debut at Southend in the promotion season and scored. A few days later he scored against Wolves in the following Tuesday night game. He was a big lad, good in the air, physical and had a modicum of skill too. He looked like he was going to be a good player.
I don’t know how many appearances he made but he always gave it his best. Somehow his career never took off as I thought it might.

yeah he did for the Busst one as well, which was caught on camera, but for some reason he'd wandered down, or up the pitch, depending on your pov all the way to the North stand end of the pitch, whilst there was a lengthy delay treating Whelan and the players were all milling around our end, and the Man Utd physios were helping out too stablise the injury and he definitely hurled, as there was some vocal suggestions from the crowd he should go get a bucket or help clean it up.
The sort of player who wouldnt get a game for Town nowadays - in that he came into the game late and was quite good but not an obvious superstar. So he would be loanded out and discarded nowadays.
I have it fixed in my mnd that he was a qualified accountant - somewhat unusual for a jobbing central defender - at a time when they had a Cambridge graduate and Russian speaker in the team.
He scored in his first two games - one away to Southend, which obviously made an impression because they bought him - Southend being quite a bit better then than they are now.
He was good enough to be a regular in the team that won the second division - which to put into context, Burley's teams never did - and plyed capably in the top division until he had his ankle wrecked - and was never quite the same'
I remember him being a solid yet limited defender.
He got sent off against Arsenal for telling a linesman to f**k off - happened right in front of me.
Did he get 2 yellows in the matter of seconds? Seem to remember him giving an official some abuse, getting a yellow, carrying it on and getting sent off!
In addition to the headers mentioned the other thing I think of is his beautifully timed tackle on Dean Saunders which inexplicably resulted in a penalty. Molby tucked it away. Still rankles now CHEAT CHEAT CHEAT.
1) The penalty after a good challenge was against Liverpool in August 92.
2) When he injured his ankle against Man Utd, Schmeichel did not throw up, unless he was in pain from his own injury, picked up earlier in that game after a collision with Chris Kiwomya, which saw him subbed off for Gary Walsh.
Fondest memory of Whelan was of his constant foot races with Andrei Kanchelskis.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
