Matthew Syed is brilliant, his article in today's Times pulls no punches either. It's behind a paywall but here's the opening paragraph to enjoy...

"In the long history of useful idiocy, and the way in which self-righteous people unwittingly act on behalf of tyrants and dictators, a chapter should be devoted to Chelsea fans. A phalanx of this pitiful demographic has, over the past 20 years, acted as an unpaid army of PR bots for Roman Abramovich and, by implication, Vladimir Putin and his kleptocracy, a tale that we should not overlook on a watershed day for sport."

Just this.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

For a man who, for all his many faults, seems to be relatively in tune with what a large proportion of the population are thinking he seems remarkably out of touch on this one. Maybe he thinks there's more Chelsea fans than there really are.

Nah, he's just a c**t.

Should be the end of him really. But I doubt it will be.

Edit. And the people you always knew were appalling and doing nothing but validate your opinion of them.

I like the fact the the first three replies to Williamson plugging antisemitic, homophobic rape apologist George Galloway are people telling him to f**k off and they're unfollowing him as a result.

Well, if they cannot fulfil the fixtures that’s their problem. Withdraw from the league and start again, take the points hit, who cares.

They’ve won trophy after trophy on the back of criminal, dodgy money so be happy, enjoy what you had. If it’s back to a broken brick rubbish stadium with 10k crowds and a poor lower league team, be grateful for what you were given.

Sadly I suspect our weak, corrupt government will cave in, but they’ve actually no reason to. The Chelsea morons have nailed their colours to the RA mast at Burnley. While I cannot bring myself to say the words, I hope Chelsea lose.

Exactly this
- they go back to what they were pre Abramovic
- non entity ramshackle average club with poor attendances

Fans have wallowed in the Russian blood money and buying trophies for years, so no sympathy there…..
Plastic fans can go off and support Manure or another team
Leaving the rump of Chelsea hoolies left to take them back to the 1980s

In fairness, Chelsea were contenders for the top six of the Premier League before Abramovich took over. They finished fourth in 02/03, 6th in 01/02, 6th in 00/01, 5th in 99/00, 3rd in 98/99 etc. Ok, they weren’t fighting for the title but they were at least nearer the top than bottom - unlike Manchester City, for example.

Yes Matthew Hardings money took them to a certain level temporarily but that was in an era where different teams (including Town) had their time in the ‘sun’ either through a bit of extra money or good management or both.

Then Abramovic came along and elevated Chelsea way above their station, totally distorting the picture and paving the way for others to do so.

Let’s not forget we are talking about a club who are only really the 4th biggest in London, whose we’re getting crowds of only 15k in recent history, and whose fanbase will soon wither back to that if money and trophies dry up.

Right on.
Now it's our turn to wallow in the Pension Fund money and buy Trophies for years to come.

Even if that was as you paint it there is one big difference. Abramovich essentially stole the money then used it to buy legitimacy by raising his profile through pumping money into Chelsea (see posts on Matthew Parris’ views 2013 and yesterday). If a pension fund management chooses to invest in sporting enterprises, that’s up to them.

As far as I’m concerned, the Chelsea players and staff are in receipt of stolen goods (money) and should be thrown in jail to await trial. No bail allowed, of course!

Ok I know that isn’t really how it is, but I’d love to see the look on their faces as they’re bundled into to police wagon.

More luck than judgement on our part though, isn't it?

I think there is ample evidence that football fans in general won't ask too many questions about investment into their club and aren't in much of a position to do so. Still more evidence that the FA and EFL are never going to let ethics get in the way of the chance to make a few more quid.

Which is why defending the game from dirty money is going to require government action (no chance with the current lot).

Absolutely. I’m chucking rocks at them from a moral high ground that’s a tad dubious.

If I was a Newcastle fan I’d feel a bit off about the head choppers’ money coming in, but when the trophies were paraded, I’d cheer with the rest of them. Total hypocrite really.

Still, fact of the matter is I find Chelsea’s situation funny and a bit what goes around comes around. A situation most of the plastics that follow them (about 80%) would never have dreamed of.

Thing is, I'd generally defend the idea that football teams, morally-speaking, belong to their communities, their supporters. That if someone objectionable buys your team, it's still yours in a sense and I see no reason why that person's wealth should be able exclude you from something that's still yours. So, I get why you'd keep going to Newcastle, Citeh, Chelsea etc. Those oligarchs have no right to destroy all the relationships that exist around a football club.

But yeah, still, screw Chelsea fans, they've clapped along all the way and if they get chewed up and spat out in the National League South or wherever, I'm fine with that.
And frankly, football clubs going to the wall is never as sad as people make it out to be. Because football clubs belong to communities, something always rises from the ashes. Sometimes something better.

They gave him extra time to sort this before sanctions (like he wasn't tipped off)

Chelsea now have a special licences to operate which is a disgrace - you don't give out special licenses to kick plastic around a pitch - it is for essential medical supplies and saving lives - no other reason what so ever.

Either do this properly or stop taking us for dicks.

Chelsea is an asset and all assets are frozen, no exceptions because it is a football club. Stop it operating today. Don't pay the players and close it down. Plenty are going to suffer as a result of sanctions and a football club has no importance in the scheme of what is going on.

The club was financed by stealing the natural resources of the Russian people.
The stolen money corrupted football and made it an exclusive winning cups for a few teams funded through similar money.

And, no, it is not the same as how Ipswich is funded or other similar funding models outside communities where the club is based. We do not watch players paid with money stolen that has left extreme poverty in rural areas of Russia or that funds a delusional leader who is embittered by the collapse 30 years ago of all that he held meaningful in his life.

So if they disappear off the football map then good riddance

I’ve looked at this post and I’m struggling to find a counter argument. Why exactly are Chelsea a special case? They are owned by Abramovich whose ill gotten gains have been frozen. Why not his pet laundromat, Chelsea? So they can’t fulfil their fixtures? So what.

So their fixtures are expunged and the Champions League gravy train would have to issue a bye to their next opponents. No hardship there. Not the fans fault? It’s not my fault that gas and oil prices are rocketing. It’s the way it is and we have to live with it.

Football would go on and Chelsea could start again at the bottom. It’d give the entitled Roman loving Chelsea numbskulls new grounds to go to. I don’t see what makes them different to Bury Town who went to the wall for owing less money than Chelsea pay their players in a day. One club goes bust because of financial mismanagement another is ‘special’ because it’s funded by stolen money, bought 20 trophies and must be preserved at all costs.

The govt gave their mate Roman plenty of warning over this. He should have been first on the freeze list. Even Zelenski noticed it with all he had on his plate. Leniency has been shown to that ghastly club and I can only suspect that there’s something in it for certain people beyond.

As is rightly pointed out, do it properly or stop taking us for mugs.

Ok, this is an extreme take on the Chelsea situation and there to be challenged.

Thirded really. The only thing I can think of is that by imposing sanctions on Chelsea we're imposing sanctions on ourselves - all the local employees and suppliers for the club. That seems illogical, but other than that why should they benefit from ill gotten gains?

Again, it's money over morals as far as I can see. No other reason for not hitting Abramovich harder and sooner.
