Even if that was as you paint it there is one big difference. Abramovich essentially stole the money then used it to buy legitimacy by raising his profile through pumping money into Chelsea (see posts on Matthew Parris’ views 2013 and yesterday). If a pension fund management chooses to invest in sporting enterprises, that’s up to them.
As far as I’m concerned, the Chelsea players and staff are in receipt of stolen goods (money) and should be thrown in jail to await trial. No bail allowed, of course!

Thing is, I'd generally defend the idea that football teams, morally-speaking, belong to their communities, their supporters. That if someone objectionable buys your team, it's still yours in a sense and I see no reason why that person's wealth should be able exclude you from something that's still yours. So, I get why you'd keep going to Newcastle, Citeh, Chelsea etc. Those oligarchs have no right to destroy all the relationships that exist around a football club.

Thirded really. The only thing I can think of is that by imposing sanctions on Chelsea we're imposing sanctions on ourselves - all the local employees and suppliers for the club. That seems illogical, but other than that why should they benefit from ill gotten gains?
Again, it's money over morals as far as I can see. No other reason for not hitting Abramovich harder and sooner. |  |
