I don’t think there’s much to stop these given they travel at 5x the speed of sound. Russia is certainly throwing all it can at Ukraine and it’s hard to know who time benefits the most. There’s an interesting guardian article Russia’s satellites or allies if you wish to take Putin’s line, that suggest time might not be on his side. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/mar/11/russia-has-lost-its-soft-power-how

Ultimately I guess it would be about preventing them being fired and whether there is a system that can detect them, identify their flightpath, send a signal and generate a response rapidly enough to deal with them. The longer the flightpath the more likely the possibility. In this context it is likely Ukraine can do little about them.

It seems the Russians are just pushing the US to see what they will do or more importantly not do. Knocking down a drone is low risk to Russia, other than to the Russian pilots, since all they’ll get from Biden is a few angry words, given escalation fears. The Black Sea is considered by Russia Russian. International waters etc? Nope. Russia is ignoring all that just as they are just about everything else. Is it a sensible game to play? Clearing out the US is, but whether they succeed or Biden responds is another matter. I suspect the US will ignore the incident and rethink how it’s keeping an eye on things. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Just seen the footage of the Su27 coming in on that drone. As a piece of flying, that’s one of the stupidest things you will ever see. Looks to me like he was trying to to knock it down with the jet wash and indeed that’s what happened by the look of it. But given the speed etc he could very easily have brought down his own aircraft. Nuts.

There has always been briefing and counter-briefing amongst Russian MoD, Wagner and other PMCs, but latest outputs from ISW and UK MoD (very cautious sources) suggesting the Russian MoD might be deliberately hamstringing them for political reasons.
There is also suggestions that Wagner might not be able to complete their encirclement and capture of Bahkmut.

The 'special military operation' continues to reach new lows. on 16:21 - Mar 17 with 3679 views | giant_stow | Just thought I'd add a post here - apparently Poland is sending 4 MiG-29s and Slovakia is sending all of its 13 Migs. Unless I have this wrong (possible) this seems like fairly massive news.

Well, MIG 29s are old and of limited value, but the Ukrainians should be able to service and operate them. I think their value is more political than military. The problem with supplying western aircraft is training and logistics of supporting them. If say F16 Falcons were supplied (in themselves old tech, but good), the time it’d take to train pilots to use them and the people needed to support them, the right munitions etc, I’m not sure how viable they would be let alone when they’d be operational. It’s always been my view that the real answer was a no fly zone on the eve of the invasion a year ago, invited by Ukraine. There’s nothing Russia could have done. Too late now.

Didn't another dictator only travel through a bomb-ravaged city at night in order that the extent of the devastation might be hidden from them? I'm sure someone on here will know.
