Over the last 10 seasons it does seem the case for League one teams. Not sure before then though

it would be interesting to know that compares with teams going from the Championship to the Premier. although that will be distorted somewhat by one particular club participating in so many relegations

In the last ten years 14 teams have been relegated from the Premiership after gaining promotion from the Championship the previous year (counted this one due to Norwich & Watford already relegated). So nearly half

Blimey, that’s a sobering read histers. Let’s hope we rewrite the narrative in the 23/24 season.

Before 2018 plenty did better. In 4 seasons, 4 finished in the top 10 and only 2 teams got relegated. This season Luton finished 6th only 3 seasons after going up.

There is no reason why, if we can get the team right to get promoted, we can't also build on that in the Championship.

A lot of the relegated teams are exactly who you'd expect too - teams that aren't big enough to sustainably survive at that level.

The gap between L1 and the Championship seems like it’s the biggest it’s ever been, but some clubs have shown that you can do more than just survive when promoted. We need to simply keep building a side and then add pieces to it to help us compete. First and foremost we need to find a formula to get us out of this league.

Indeed. I think the point of this post was to show teams have more then less struggled after gaining promotion from this Division in their first year back in the Championship & not to exceed expectation.

But as you say we are building well & I believe we be in or near the play offs in the Championship 3/4 years time.

I'd say the opposite. The Championship has never been more League 1-like, it's a division full of small teams working on a shoestring budget.

When we went down we were one of the poorest teams in the division, if we went up now we'd be one of the richest, and not just because of GC20.

I’d suggest that gap is mostly down too the influence of Sky money via parachute money for clubs relegated from the PL into the Championship. It’s made the championship a second tier Premier League. It’s got nothing to do with “ football”, but only about how much money a club has at its disposal. This is largely why Evans stopped trying to compete with Sky money. Look at the clubs getting relegated from PL at the end of this season… they will have £80million sloshing around in their bank before a single transfer has been completed in the summer. And in previous years this parachute money was far more than £80m …..how on earth can “ established” Championship clubs even begin to compete with that? This is why Town struggled. We were consistently as a solid Championship club…in many ways “ better” than those that got promoted , only to be be immediately relegated, but these relegated Clubs would have ridiculous parachute funding as a reward….” Reward for failure “ as Mick McCarthy once said.

Sky money has distorted the game …it’s no longer an even playing field, it’s no longer about “ football”, and Sky’s poison is gradually filtering down the football pyramid .

There are other ways to overegg that list. That’s quite an eclectic list of clubs including some that had recently experienced 4th division football. And two made it all the way to the Prem from the class of 2014 - and two others briefly Were n that basis Wycombe have a 10% chance of being a Prem team within a decade.

Teams that liked to play football - Bournemouth, Wolves and Brentford seem to do ok. Your Wycombe’s and Rotherham’s seem to do less well.

reading this makes it all the more important, IMO, that we gain promotion playing a nice style of football as opposed to them sht holes wycombe.

add to that we know our owners will send heavily.

i personally think we'd do just fine if/when we go up

And then the leap from Championship to PL is eye-watering in terms of cost.

Yes I know it *can* be done cheaper, but it's another world

Sorry to be thick but are we saying that Bournemouth spent 199 million to get from the Championship to the PL?

Yes, sort of.

Estimated value of their squad at current prices from Keiran Maguire who is a bit of a gospel on these things.

It shows the PL parachute effect where you simply don't have to sell your squads and get to have a huge advantage for the next season. It's only going to get worse too.

Clubs like Luton getting into the playoffs is very much the exception, when you think Fulham are paying Mitrovic more per year than the entire value of their squad.

I assume it is the cost of their player assets - which backs up the theory that the top of the championship is becoming an elite club for yoyo teams. Parachute payments are so fecking wrong. Not that I am sympathetic to Derby, but they did feel they could roll the financial dice - and lost.. I doubt it would have ever been so extreme on their part had the league not become a sham with FFP protecting the premier league failures.

Also... Mitrovic playing in the championship was such a joke, Fulham never would have afforded that without the PL stipend.

Surely it's transfer fees paid for their squad? I'd imagine Luton have a couple of players who on their own are worth more than £3.5m...

The introduction of parachute payments has completely ruined the Championship. Can you imagine how easily we would've been promoted if we hadn't had to sell the likes of Holland, Bent, Stewart, Hreidarsson etc.

Poll: Do you think we have a stronger squad this season or last season?
