Nationality - Northern Irish ...mmmmmm 14:05 - May 26 with 2120 viewsKeno

My inner pedant has just had a field day with my compliance dept over the fact that on the database it lists Northern Irish as a separate nationality

Ive pointed out that people born in that area can be either British or Irish

Northern Ireland can be a place of birth but is not a separate nationality

Its a slow day so I thought I'd share

Hi Keno,

Genuine question here and apologies for how naïve I am being here.

I was born in Northern Ireland but only lived there for 18 month before moving to England. Could I apply for an Irish passport? Never really thought about it.

Thanks,

Northern Ireland have a national football team though.

So you can be British, Irish or Northern Irish depending on the context.

Yes you can. Also your children can, even if you were not an Irish citizen at the time if their birth. Get on it! Just registering my youngest, the processing time is 18 months currently though….

I was born in Pimlico before 2005. There were quite a few Irish people living in the area. Presumably I qualify for an Irish passport?

Not a separate nationality but definitely a different breed.

Think so. I believe they have an international football team, although they play most of their games away from home.

I can apply for an Irish passport as my mum, although from NI, was for that purpose born on the island of Ireland. Nationality and citizenship is a different thing.

Yes you can. I was born in Northern Ireland to British parents and now have an Irish passport. It's all very simple if you have your birth certificate. Even if you don't, you can order a copy.
