Economic crisis....anyone cutting back 19:13 - Jun 17 with 8883 views | gtsb1966 | Keep reading in the news of 1 in 4 cutting back on food, not using the car as much and not having takeaways or nights out. Anyone on here cutting back on anything. The really worrying thing is that if it's hard now imagine what the winter is going to bring. I'm definitely being more energy efficient. Took so much for granted in the past.

Economic crisis....anyone cutting back on 20:13 - Jun 17 by gtsb1966 | That's the problem isn't it. You get these people saying they can feed themselves/family so cheap but they look over a couple of days not a month. It doesn't matter if you eat meat or are vegetarian, protein isn't cheap and we are only talking about one meal a day. What about lunch and breakfast. |
Quite. Anyone could live on a main meal of X amount of pennies per day, but would they want to? Sooner or later you're gonna go mad if you see another [insert foodstuff here]. People need variety, for mental health reasons as much as nutrition. We can mostly deal with routine but repetition, not so much. [Post edited 17 Jun 2022 20:20]

Economic crisis....anyone cutting back on 20:18 - Jun 17 with 1254 views | Mullet | I'd planned to change the car this year as it's had a decent run from new and wanted to get a hybrid. They're just crazy expensive even on finance so I guess, it's a toss up as to how long I drive it for. The house has needed some work doing for a while which with COVID making it harder function with two small kids and people in and out, hasn't happened. I feel bad as I like to shop/support local businesses especially with stuff like that, but I'm not sure what my job prospects hold. The real term wage cut for teachers in the last decade is really biting now across the country. Suspect we will be in for another round in the Tory press soon enough.

If the house needs work, you’ll probably be fine and we’ll be well over this crisis by the time you find someone. Crazy waiting lists around here - 18 months for some stuff.

There is certainly call for more investment in trades. There's been a ridiculous shortage for years. Years of being looked down upon as laymen has come back to bite society when only those with a degree seemed to hold any status and so some people who might have traditionally gone into something more beneficial were told it was important they get a degree, even if they had no direction or idea what they wanted to do once they'd achieved it. Not enough emphasis on trades at all nor clearly the adequate support for those who may be interested. A doctor can't operate without the fundamentals trades bring. His education and training is of limited use without a building, equipment, clean water and sanitary products. We need another shift in society where people are valued for the roles they perform. Also doesn't into account having a balanced diet, which means either you eat fish or buy supplements to deal with that. Which is more money. That also means enjoying cooking enough to make things taste nice which is difficult and takes time. Maybe there's only one parent with four mouths to feed and after work getting the energy the then cook a big meal with fussy kids isn't the easiest. This isn't a made up scenario either, quite literally my childhood.

Economic crisis....anyone cutting back on 20:47 - Jun 17 with 1140 views | Churchman | Not really. I’ve know what it’s like in the last century to have to account for every penny and I don’t have to do that now. However, during lockdown(s), especially when the panic brigade were stripping the shelves, we got much more disciplined in food buying in particular, a list and one main shop that was stuck to, batch cooking, moving away from instant/nuked dinners and cooking from scratch. We’ve always tried own brands and gone with what we like. Overall, we waste far less food and it costs us less without ant hardship. Obviously we eat out now and again and socialise etc but our in-house catering is cheaper and nicer. Fortunately the misses is an excellent cook and does nearly all of this. Other stuff? I bought more lagging for the roof a year ago and will fit another layer in the autumn. The boiler is new so no worries there. Overall, yes, the wallet is going to take a massive hit, but we are lucky in that we won’t be forced into any economy measures.
Economic crisis....anyone cutting back on 20:54 - Jun 17 with 1128 views | HARRY10 | I doubt it will stop the women in the supermarket carpark who load the shopping in the boot, get into the car, start the engine..... .........then sitting pecking at her tin cuttle fish like some budgie on speed, for 10 minutes. The foreign johnnies who buy (and drag home) umpteen bottles of water. and maybe stop asking your kids what they want for tea, and serve them what you have

In all honesty we're OK. Both work and not extravagant in life but determined this time to look at how to save money and stick to it. I'm having to help my daughter though so I can only imagine how some are coping. It must be awful.

Firstly takeaways, and meals out will be canned, and then other monthly costs that are nice to haves rather than essentials will go. I do wonder if things get really bad will people start cancelling ST DD's...

Yep, for some. Those in demand are booked up for anything from 9-18 months. Easy & small jobs not so difficult, but larger or more specialist jobs are taking ages. Edit - it’s not just tradesmen either. My car’s got a computer systems issue and the main dealer has said August was the first slot for diagnostics. A neighbour had a similar issue and it took 7 weeks to be looked at. We asked a local well respected company for a kitchen quote back in the early spring and they were taking bookings for well into next year. It all seems to be going to sh*t. Some years ago I went through the phonebook looking for a plumber/fitter - not an emergency but had some work needed doing. No one wanted to know and everyone I spoke to said the same thing; they were too busy. I ended up going up to a trade unit on an industrial estate to pester plumbers who were there to buy parts. Even there I got there same answer with the odd empty promise to call me when they got a gap. This was over 20 years ago so has been a long time in needing addressing.

With people having to make more of their own entertainment I’m sure STDs will increase. Ah sorry, I misread that

When I moved to Tenerife in 92 I made a Stir Fry on day one. Like Trigger's broom, the same stir fry lasted for ages. Never managed to finish what was in the Wok so just kept adding stuff in over the next few weeks.

I now live on the south coast and it’s a 400 mile round trip to come to PR every other Saturday, at the start of last season it was costing me £65 to fill up my tank of 55 litres, now we’re looking at £100+ and even with economical driving it’s now going to be cheaper for me to take the train to go to games as I can do that for £70 return
