The song that made you go "wow". A song that gave you a feeling that hasn't been bettered since. And maybe even a story to go with it.
Long story short, I was off school after twisting my left nut the night before playing squash. It was the morning after John Lennon had been murdered and confined to my bed I listened to Radio One's all day coverage. This came on, I think it was played by Andy Peebles, and it stopped me in my tracks.
Saw him on Saturday. It's the biggest wow song I know.
My actual wow song though. I'd lived a bit of a sheltered life musically as a young'un, growing up on my parents tastes. Never had a problem as they're still a big part of my life. But I remember my friend buying this as a single and playing it to death. It still sits heavy with me now and always puts a smile on my face...
Driving from Tampa Bay back to Orlando after a 3 week holiday in the USA, I was falling asleep at the wheel, this came on the radio, I got home safe :)
Just the most amazing bit of music ever, cuts right into my soul.
I’m sure this is recency bias because as nostalgic person it should be something from 15+ years ago, when I could first drink, go to gigs or really appreciate music. However, it’s this one from LCD Soundsystem. Seeing this at the end of their set live, with a lass I was fairly serious about at the time, in my favorite Indie venue in the States.
It just had that, this is how music is supposed to make you feel moment. Pretty sure it was just before Christmas 2017. They’re so good live, I’m convinced it’s how people felt when seeing to Joy Division in the 80s, atmospheric. Although I’m sure the older heads will tell me how you can’t compare etc
Whatever, great tune and superb band. Also it can’t be your “Wow” song if you’ve never heard it live.
Time a nightcap.

A "Wow" album rather than song - to this day, still can't get get my head around how it's possible to create something like this using just a few old records and turntables...

If memory serves, the Greatest Hits tour was about 2002 or 2003. Ian Brown nwas the support and he was awful.
The best Manics tour for me was when the played the complete Everything Must Go album. I thought it was quite recent before remembering it was actually 8 years ago.
Last saw them at the Glasgow Barrowlands last October. James Dean Bradfield carries the whole thing. Works so hard on stage.
I think I saw that tour, I certainly remember seeing James do an acoustic version of Yes at some point which was just fantastic. Could have been some other gig though. I've probably seen them at Cambridge a dozen times or more down the years as that's nearest for me, including the most recent album, but have also seen them at camden roundhouse, some other place in london I don't recall, saw them at Wolverhampton for the Futuorology tour expecting Nina Hoss to be there for Europa geht durch mich (my favourite track off that album) only for James to announce she had arrived too late for the sound check so they performed without her! Bit gutted. Also dragged the Mrs to the motorpoint arena in Cardiff a few years ago for Resistance is Futile and that was an excellent night.
I bet the Barrowlands is some atmosphere.
In the late 90s I saw Catatonia support them at least a couple of times and that got me into those too. Cerys Matthews is a bit of a plank but she was easy on the eye back then (at least a teenage me thought so) and they had some decent hits.
You're right about James, he's a real force on stage. Nicky Wire writes some cracking lyrics though, when he's not trying to impersonate Richey...

Why is Cerys a plank?
I think she is blooming brilliant.
“Hello, I'm your MP. Actually I'm not. I'm your candidate. Gosh.”

She's just always come across as a bit of a fame hungry limelight seeker for me. I might be wide of the mark but that's the impression I get of her.
I spent a rainy afternoon on a table next to her in the Sloop Inn, Porthgain, Pembs once. She came across as very un-planklike. Seemed very genuine. I think she's changed a lot over the years though.

The Sloop is one of the great pubs. I was there last summer, and it was as good as ever, although very busy.
