Ahem, I did caveat non loans before we all go down a rabbit hole... Quite nice to 'Ahem' the leader...

Ha, I was just commenting on the Gio comments! That said, loans can be marquee signings, Celina could be viewed in that way last summer.

Oh, I totally agree, but they are generally, for me, not as wow as actually signing someone permanently that we never thought we could. There are plenty of loans that would be shock value, but tainted somewhat as it's not actually a huge achievement or pull to get. As I mentioned earlier Sixto was a marquee loan signing. I had some friends that though Reo-Coker was, obviously, they are no longer friends. [Post edited 23 Jun 2022 16:14]

Years Team Apps (Gls) 1993—1995 Alavés 45 (2) 1995—1997 Valencia 25 (1) 1995—1996 → Valladolid (loan) 24 (2) 1997—1998 Mallorca 33 (1) 1998—2003 Real Madrid 60 (1) 2002—2003 → Bolton Wanderers (loan) 31 (2) 2003—2008 Bolton Wanderers 141 (11) 2008—2009 Ipswich Town 17 (1) 2009—2010 AEK Larnaca 8 (0) |
In my mind Campo was at Real Madrid for a decade before having a short spell at Bolton and a shorter one here. Can't believe he played 3 times as many games for Bolton nearly as he did Real!

Oh, I'm not denying it wasn't a decent signing... I was more clarifying whether Camp(o) was 'marquee' enough in terms of a show of 'in-tent'...

Used to see Peters in my local Gym, kept an eye out what machines he used, but the only one I could ever see was the Vending.

I know what you mean. I can't think of too many in recent years. I suppose some of those last summer were akin to marquee signings, Pigott was the previous season's top scorer, or one of them, Chaplin came from a higher division and Aluko was someone who had spent all his career playing in higher divisions.

We signed him in 2001. He played well in the '98 World Cup, but was past his best when by the time we got him.

Whilst I rate Chaplin, and it was a bit of a coup to get him to drop down, I do wonder if we are viewing players like Pigott as marquee, given the starvation of quality under the Evans stewerdship. It all comes down to how you view a marquee signing, and everyone will have different views on this and different criteria so it's actually quite hard to gauge. But I thought at the time that Lee Chapman was marquee, so that tells you how much I know!

Tarrico wasn't the marquee signing, it was Paz. The little Argentinean future legend coming along for the ride as he spoke English IIRC. Never forget his awful debut against the up and coming Bolton when he clotheslined someone, McGinley? Dumped into youths, no strop, no diva stuff, and eventually into our hearts. Legend, yes. Marquee signing, no.

Chapman was a big name, although past his best when he joined us. I suppose it's difficult to make marquee signings when you're in League One.

Walton and Morsy were marquee signings in my book. Likewise, Celina. Same with Smallwood at Bradford. Any player that could consistently play well above your level that you manage to sign is marquee surely?

Yep, thats the crux, being in this division hamstrings us greatly, not only from a financial perspective but also trying to entice marquee signings to drop down.

Marquee Signings on 17:18 - Jun 23 with 646 views | BigCommon | Putting things into context.... Getting Walton done on a permanent last year was one that I was chuffed with... Excited about Dom Ball coming in this season.... And when you look at Chaplin, Evans, Morsey, last season? Getting anyone, of decent age, to drop down a division. Has to be considered a bit of a coup, imo... When you think, a proper "wow" signing, is usually a player coming in, that you'd consider, better than average, in comparison to our existing squad.. Well, given the quality of some of our players. A wow signing , won't be easy...They'd have to be top half Championship standard.. Very hard to compete in the transfer market, at that level , even with our investment and potential.....

Of course this was a time when Bolton also had the brilliant JayJay Okocha and Djorkaeff. A ridiculous trio, more so when you look at how fast they fell

An absolutely insane team, really but unsustainable for them. I think Gary Speed was a touch underrated when he was a player. More appreciated after he retired and even more so after his sad death. Some side, real glory years for them

Taricco was a makeweight in Paz deal. Luggage. Thank goodness! Sereni was no marquee signing. He was a panic buy to try and replace Wright. Thijssen and Muhren cost the same as combined and replaced Talbot. No marquee signing there. They were cheap as chips.
