What is wrong with some of our fans 15:37 - Jul 4 with 3656 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | Get on the replies to this ahah. I get that football is a game if opinions but how can people say they wouldn’t take Celina back here… it really does not make any sense. This is just one tweet but there are lots of them saying we should try and find someone better etc. This is objective right. We will not get anyone better than Celina. As per the below tweet, he seems keen. Bring him home.

What is wrong with some of our fans on 15:48 - Jul 4 with 2803 views | clive_baker | I don't get why you wouldn't want a player who quite clearly has bags of ability and has shown it at a higher level than this one. Last season was disjointed for so many reasons - fitness, illness, no pre season, manager change, he was in and out of the side etc. And he still managed to contribute in just about all the highlights and create chances, score goals and assist. The fact he's not already back here suggests something has to be true before he does sign, maybe Dijon are holding out, or we are until there's a departure or 2 (Hladky maybe, Pigott ideally although unlikely). He's clearly keen, and KM rates him. I want to see it done ASAP so he can have a decent pre season with us. I still think a settled side that has Celina and Chaplin in the hole is capable of tearing up this division.

What is wrong with some of our fans on 15:48 - Jul 4 with 2795 views | jayessess | As the Twine episode demonstrates, people wildly over-estimate the kind of player you can attract to League One. Realistically, money no object, we will struggle to recruit a better player than Bersant Celina this Summer and I doubt anyone opposed to it could name someone they want instead who wouldn't be more of a risk, rather than less. Not just Celina, there were people underwhelmed at us signing Dominic Ball, but what better defensive midfielders are there in League One?

What is wrong with some of our fans on 15:51 - Jul 4 with 2756 views | STYG | I have no issue with people having concerns over us signing Celina permanently for a sizeable fee and him likely being the highest earner. For similar money there is a sensible conversation to be had that we could attract someone who has a bigger impact consistently. However, when you consider Celina had no pre-season, COVID, then became one of the most creative players in the league (despite some people thinking he did very little) this only goes to show how mental it would be having a player like that in League One if he did play to his potential. 12 goal involvements in 23 starts is good, great when you consider how he was playing catch up. Then add in the sheer amount of chances our strikers wasted when he set them up and he could have easily been top of the league for goal involvements! You'd be mad to not want him back here in any capacity. The only sensible objection is how much it takes to bring him back and if it hinders improving the rest of the squad from a financial point of view. Last year, Celina scored the best goal I have seen us score in over 20 years, the best assist I have seen for some time for Burns against Charlton and that would have been beaten against Plymouth if Burns hadn't fired wide. He's the sort of player you pay your money to watch. But those suggesting they wouldn't want a player, already this good, because he doesn't play to his potential (ignoring the fact that means they believe he is even better) can get in the bin! What is wrong with some of our fans on 15:54 - Jul 4 with 2689 views | SouperJim | To be fair it's a question of what he costs us and whether we can better use that money. Purely on the basis of do we want Celina back here, of course we do, absolute no brainer. But if bringing him back means we don't bring in anyone else this window, you'd have to question it, particularly with Chaplain and Aluko already here.

What is wrong with some of our fans on 15:59 - Jul 4 with 2632 views | Mediocre_Quick | Played 32, and with 12 G/A, thats a goal or an assist every 2.6 games, couldn't ask for a better option than him... People forget too that he had no pre-season, came to us after barely recovering from COVID, missed the first however many games, now imagine him fully fit, and with a somewhat full pre-season under his belt, you'd expect him to double those numbers easily...

But there's a big question here about what we could actually spend that money on. The standout young attacking midfielders from League One like Scott Twine and Jack Rudoni seem to be Championship bound. So the alternative for that position is likely to mean someone not proven at our level of football. We're going to encounter similar problems if we're diverting that money into a new striker. I think there's a big question mark over whether we could realistically sign anyone else at Celina's level in any position.

I would take him back as there's literally no one we could recruit better at this level who will actually want to play here. I would take both Celina and Bonne back, out of everyone we had on loan last season.

I'd be pushing the boat out for Rudoni. I know he's a similar build but I reckon we can get him for £750k - £1m, I think he'd potentially come to a club this size given it's a step up (just like Twine stayed in League One another year) and I think Rudoni will be worth 2 or 3 times what we'd pay for him come next summer if we didn't go up. Only 21 too, can play on both sides of the striker. I'd take him on that fee and potential wages rather than the much higher financial package we'd pay Celina.

But potentially at £20k a week is the issue. If we can get him closer to £7k then ok, but otherwise we are better spending our money elsewhere And if he play, potentially Chaplin doesn’t and i’d rather invest in our own player [Post edited 4 Jul 2022 16:30]

I'd imagine Rudoni could be got for £750k - £1m and probably wages of £6k - £7k with a nice promotion bonus. When you consider that's less than £2m over 3 years and Celina would potentially be at least that just on the transfer fee, before you get to the wages, you can see why it may not make sense to revisit Celina. Part of me wonders if the Downes sell on will play a big part in the whole thing though.

We can afford to carry one 'non athelete' if he brings as much to the side as Cellina does.

You may well be right. He certainly fits with the style of football that McK seems to favour. And I think he's right up there with Morsy when it comes to passing accuracy. In addition, his control and speed of thinking probably more than makes up for any lack of athleticism. [Post edited 4 Jul 2022 16:47]

Given what he have already in the squad, I'd say that's a tradeoff worth making.

Did you really just suggest that we carried Celina last season? There's no way that can even be suggested, I'm not usually one for stats, but his workrate defensively last season was impressive, yes he loses the ball a lot, but he also worked to get it back

I think Rudoni's a great example of where we're going to struggle here. Rudoni was slightly less productive than Celina last season (a goal or an assist every 196 minutes v. Celina, once every 183 minutes). He created chances half as often, completed fewer passes, completed a lower percentage of his passes, mis-controlled the ball more often, gave the ball away more. That's not to say that Rudoni as a permanent signing isn't a better option than Celina on loan. He's younger, he's playing in a worse team, every reason to hope that he kicks on and is a really good player for us (although I have to say I don't think Celina hit his ceiling last season either). But, pay a £1m fee for him and you've spent the equivalent of £20k a week for a year on him already, before he gets a penny in wages. So, we're in similar territory to Celina, but we're talking similar money in total, with the risk that Rudoni doesn't in fact kick on. Finally, Rudoni's got interest from Championship clubs and if the right one decides they want him, it's game over for our transfer plans. So, in terms of 2022-23 we'd be paying more money for Rudoni, to take a bigger risk, which we might not be able to make it happen anyway, and saying pass on a player who we've seen do well not just as this level but also the level above. Even a deal like Rudoni over Celina, which might marginally make sense depending on your perspective, is very difficult to make happen. [Post edited 4 Jul 2022 16:53]

Just as many Championship clubs would have been interested in Walton, Morsy, Chaplin though. I think Rudoni will probably end up elsewhere, but if we wanted him I think we've got the ability to beat 1/2 to 2/3 of the Championship clubs to get him. If a Burnley want him though we can forget it.

Badly worded on my part - I'm saying if he's not as 'athletic' as the other, his ability more than makes up for it.

I think they could both still get lots of game time. The formation we more or less settled on last season had both in the 10 position. The only reason we played two strikers as times was, for me at least, because Norwood and Bonne weren't a bad partnership. You could also play a front three of those two and Ladapo or Jackson.

Luton, Sunderland, Bristol City and Huddersfield apparently. I just think the lure of playing Championship football at his age may be the deciding factor for him, pretty much like Twine. If we are interested in him time will tell as they say.

I'm sceptical that we'll get a lot more value for money in other positions. Even if you take last season as Celina's ceiling, we'll struggle to bring in an attacking midfielder that assures you of a goal or assist every 180 minutes or so for significantly less money. A striker posting those numbers? Forget about it. To manage that on the cheap (relatively speaking) would require identifying someone who had potential to play at that level, but hadn't done it yet (or whose ability to do it again was in doubt due to recent injury or advancing age).
