Left out of QPR squad tonight and confirmed he wasn’t injured. Beale didn’t exactly shut it down when asked if Bonne could leave… have we been in discussions with QPR at all, Phil?

Whilst I'm not convinced Macca is the answer to our striking prayers, I think some go a bit overboard on his flaws.

I think it's absolutely fair to say he's got issues timing his runs and had a very bad very long run in front of goal post-January last season. It's also obvious that McKenna doesn't particularly see him as right for the system we're playing.

But... he's scored enough goals in his career to suggest he'll get goals in the future and the idea that he'd make a dreadful replacement for Ladapo because of his hold up and link play doesn't stand up. Bonne won more headers, completed more passes, created more chances than FL has been this season. If anything he'd be an upgrade on Ladapo's link play.

Doesn't mean he's what we need but definitely think there's a tendency to underrate players we have seen regularly relative to players we haven't. We'd be doing really well to get a striker in that's substantially better than Bonne.

We all know strikers are confidence players - probably more so than anyone else on the pitch - and I think Bonne was under HUGE pressure last season. We weren't picking up enough goals, and everything seemed to lay on his shoulders. He missed, we lost/drew and the spotlight was on him.

You could see at the beginning he was flying, but that pressure inevitably got to him (alongside the stuff he had going on in his personal life) and the goals dried up.

I honestly reckon if he came into this team now - a winning team, winning mentality with goals coming from all over the pitch already - he'd be that early-season Bonne again. You can SEE the different mindset of our team this season to last and it's a good environment for a player like him.

The only issue would be if his past reputation followed him back here - i.e, if he missed one chance and the fans lost their minds over it and got on his back straight away

Hirst is far from a slam dunk and they supposedly want £4m for him.

Sorry - his goals against MK and Wycombe last year were as deft as they come, albeit in different styles.

People don't want him here, and it seems unlikely he'll come - but he's a fair player.

Bonne was over-rated by Town fans early on in his time here and is now massively under-rated. He's a decent League 1 striker who has also done ok in the Championship.

He might not be right for how we play now but some of the revisionism is rather over the top.

Grateful for what Bonne did last year and his love for the club but personally I believe we can do better - who that “better” is seems to be the issue doesn’t it

If it is Hirst then make it happen if it’s not then let’s make something else happen asap

Ladapo’s workrate again last night and seeing it in the flesh for the first time was superb but the one on one that was missed and it was a miss due to his first touch , could really cost us over the course of the season if we’ve no finisher. I believe Freddie’s goals will come but along that will also come tiredness and injuries

Whatever halos it really does need to happen asap to reap the full benefit

I’ve publicly stated a number of times that Bonne wouldn’t be one I’d have gone back in for, but ultimately as the Hirst deal becomes increasingly unlikely and harder to do then we often see threads with regards to a ‘who else then’?

And when you look around, how many people are realistic with a better record than Bonne? He’s been open about his personal issues and they affected him clearly on the pitch……as the window goes on he seems a more obvious target and an improvement on Jackson as a pure number 9 to compete with Ladapo

Jackson will be very useful this season, but I’m a variety of roles like last night as we need a focal point and Bonne much more than Jackson is one of those

And, if he does come back and is a success here it would be incredible - can’t be many players you’d want to succeed more

I'm with you on that Joe, just can't see how the optics work on the Hirst deal.

When you look around, not many names jump out, so do we go for a cheaper option for numbers with players like Bonne and Stockton or do we just sit tight with what we have.

our current striker options look like this to me;

1 - ladapo
2 -
3 - Jackson
4 - JJ -

now are those that are anti Bonne going to honestly tell me that he's not a better option to lead a line as a bit of a bully boy than the current third option?

I think at worst you get back a player that's super motivated, knows what the football club means, evidently well liked round the dressing room, works hard and offers presence up front but isn't a consistent enough goalscorer.

At best, he fulfils his potential, hits the heights of Autumn 2021 and stays there or thereabouts, making us a much better side.

I think he’d be an ideal addition at this stage (he’d be a known quantity coming into a squad that knows what it wants to be, therefore minimising risk on a new player being introduced that doesn’t fit the new culture). God - Imagine Bonne on the town hall balcony in May!

Now we have Ladapo and the 10s playing and scoring we have a different attacking dynamic. Ladapo appears to have more to him than first understood, he is multi dimensional, meaning we have a player playing a duel role.

Our other striker option provides 1 half option (the press, and getting in behind) - that’s Jackson, the other half option could be a Bonne style player (offering high press, quick counters, end of crosses from full backs/wing backs, strength to hold up a bit for 10s to play off).

He didn’t score many in KMcKs first squad between Jan-April but we are now more fluid and we have different players for a 4231 and some 343 variations, we are also creating different types of chances. Bonne did well in Paul Cook’s 4231 and could offer a different profile.

I think Bonne would make a excellent squad player and we don't know what was happening in his life which may had a affect on his football.
Yes we can do better not convinced if that is Hirst.
It's all about what the club wants to pay in transfer fees for a striker but Bonne is a good low fee alternative.
As a out and out striker
Not a wide man surely better than Jackson

Pretty much non existent by all accounts, unless you class Ashton's dashboard as overseas scouting.

But, agreed, would be nice to know we were looking, because as it stands it's slim pickings, and even he's not been on great form...

Sitting tight isn't an option. If Ladapo got an injury we have no similar replacement.

But he has to be coached into not being offside so often because that breaks up our patterns of play. It's one thing that Jackson is very good at, and thus far this season we haven't had many offsides, which suggests Lapado is also doing well on this front. In my view, constantly being offside does not indicate a very clever footballer.

There's not very many visa-compliant leagues we can realistically recruit from whilst in League One.

Ladapo 0.8 offsides per 90 this season.
Bonne 1.1 offsides per 90 last season.

Ladapo's an improvement, but we're talking one less offside every 3 games here.

That's better than I thought. It could well be that his higher rate of offsides coincided with his barren spell when he was just trying too hard. If he could play as well as he did against Oxford, he would be a real asset.
