Of course they would.... on 17:33 - Sep 8 by Bloots | ....you'd get the full range from middle aged extremists who should know better, through trust fund twenty somethings who think it's cool to be rebellious, to kids that just want to impress their mates. Bunch of divs. |
As I tried to say elsewhere having seen some ugly stuff on Twitter earlier it wouldn't be a shock if the odd cretin piped up.

If London Bridge has indeed fallen... on 16:56 - Sep 8 by hoppy | So we've got a West End Theatre show tomorrow night, ITFC v Cambridge on Saturday, Comedy Night on Monday night, ITFC v Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night, travelling to Bristol on Thursday for a funeral on Friday, then another show in London on Sunday 18th, which all fall within the 10 day period being spoken of. How many of those are likely to be cancelled/postponed? |
Will Schools stay open during the mourning period?

If London Bridge has indeed fallen... on 17:38 - Sep 8 with 1077 views | Big_Jase | They shouldn’t cancel football, I am aware that a lot of people do respect the queen etc, but there is a huge proportion of the population who are completely apathetic about the whole thing. A rich aristocrat who I have never met, will be dead and I won’t feel a thing, although I will respect the people who do. We have to carry on for every other death in life, this shouldn’t be any different for me.

If London Bridge has indeed fallen... on 16:52 - Sep 8 by bluelagos | They would. And I'd guess all football whilst the official mourning lasts. 10 days would encompass next weekend's fixtures too. |
I've huge respect for the Queen, and she deserves whatever tribute is decided, but you watch our march to the title derailed as we take a break and lose momentum. It's the Ipswich way. (Or was).

Worth noting that a lot of people feel brave behind a keyboard, especially on social media with anonymous accounts. I'm not convinced people would show disrespect in a football stadium, surrounded by people likely to very strongly take issue with them. No argument that there are some proper idiots out there mind you!

I’d have every pound I’ve got on Celtic fans partying and celebrating her death. A minutes silence would be a silly thing to do knowing their hatred of the monarchy

If London Bridge has indeed fallen... on 17:45 - Sep 8 with 1004 views | portmanking | I really hope it won't be cancelled. I'd rather it was used as a moment of celebration for her life and service. Surely given the last couple of years we've all had, to put everyone's life on pause again for 10 days seems somewhat unnecessary? We can pay our respects without damaging the economy.

Making up scenarios like this isn’t really productive - it simply demonises fans of those clubs.

If London Bridge has indeed fallen... on 17:33 - Sep 8 by Dubtractor | Gotta be honest, I think cancelling everything wouldn't be the right response, though I suspect it is what will happen. I am saying that as someone who would broadly describe myself as anti monarchy though - like a lot of people I have no issue with the queen, but the other dickheads can all do one. |
I'm not anti-monarchy, have always hugely respected the Queen, & even I think 10 days would be hugely overdoing it - surely 24 hrs, or at the most 48, of cancellations, sad music etc. would be more appropriate in this day & age. Those who want to mourn longer would still be free to carry on doing so, tailoring their lives to suit. Those who don't want to will always find other outlets anyway. Even within such a 24/48 hour period, I really don't think all TV/radio channels should be made to carry the same sombre material either - what does it achieve? If people want to watch The Simpsons or a wildlife documentary it doesn't mean they're being disrespectful. Can't be good for mental health to focus exclusively on single topic sombre material either.

We're talking about the Head of State of a number of countries for 70 years. And there are people asking if football might be cancelled for a weekend. I'm not a monarchist, but reality has to have some place too. It's not just about respecting her as an individual, it's the end of an era. The end of that era may be mourned and welcomed in equal measure by different people for many valid reasons, but there's no getting away with how big a deal historically this is. This is where I'm at. Also, I hate 'forced' respects/mourning. People can and will pay their respects in their own way - I get that the Queen means a huge amount to a huge % of our population, and they will all mourn her loss without needing it spoon fed to them.

Oddly, as it might be the only smart thing theyve done in the past decades, the ECB has for years financially planned for just such an outcome, that a test match is suspended because of a death of a significant member of the Royal family

You’re entitled to your opinion and I respect that. But for me life goes on and you don’t stop people doing things they enjoy, if anything that would build more resentment towards the royal family and make people less respectful. There will be a quite a large number people who are upset, but there is quite a large amount of people who could quite simply couldn’t care less. [Post edited 8 Sep 2022 17:56]

Exactly. I don't say it disrespectfully, but to call off events and all forms of entertainment - that many will have invested large sums of money to be at in a cost-of-living crisis - seems out of kilter with what the Queen would want.

Apologies if I’m mistaken but it would appear your opinion is that events such as football should be cancelled, whereas mine is that it shouldn’t and you keep things going.

I haven't said anything of the sort. I'm saying this is what's happening, it's a big deal whether [some] people like it or not and it shouldn't come as a surprise if a few things are cancelled given the gravity of the situation. Not everything has to be a debate. I repeat for the twenty zillionth hundreds* time I am not a monarchist. The concept is alien to me. *I learned these numbers from Priti Patel. But respect for our nation's representative for the past several decades, beyond the lifetime of most of us and through times many of us have not endured should not just be taken for granted. Not that is my opinion. I was looking forward to Saturday by the way.
