Match postponed. 11:33 - Sep 9 with 6432 views | FrimleyBlue | Feel sorry for all those casual workers wanting wages this week and small businesses who rely on matchday income. All for paying respects etc. But should have been done with a minute silence etc not by cancelling the weekend.

Some people live week by week. Having income in 3 months won't help them next week.

Game will almost certainly be replayed midweek. We (my son and I) more than likely won't be able to make that and I've already only made one home game this season, so losing money on my season ticket fast, although that's my decision to gamble on fixture list. We get the train. We go to the pub We go to the little convenience store to get our traditional wine gums to munch on during the game We get a hot dog or burger at the stand outside We train home Week day games aren't as well attended, so it does affect businesses negatively. Any business suffers as a result of unplanned shut downs. I thought the Queen was ace, but this just isn't right IMO, especially when all else cracks on as normal. Now for the funeral...in 10+ days time, yeah...cancel stuff, but not at 24 hours notice, utter lunacy and ill thought out.

Are you surprised that a council are using an excuse to get out of work?

Match postponed. on 13:48 - Sep 9 by The_Flashing_Smile | No-one's suggesting it's going to ruin anyone's life. It's put a big spanner into my weekend though. After a stressful house move and not seeing mates for a while, I was really looking forward to the footy. The thing about the weather is you can't do anything about that. You can this. And to me, football has no relation to the monarchy. Cancelling stuff because of a global pandemic makes perfect sense. Doing so because an old lady I didn't know died makes no sense to me. |
The mental health aspect of things is usually trotted out right about now, but I'm surprised to see it hasn't been mentioned this time around (at least, not much). I mentioned on another thread that I've had a pretty crap week this week; I'm normally one who rolls their eyes at mention of mental health, but it really would have benefited me this weekend to get away from everything at the football.

I hope if that's your only definitive answer, we never have a waterlogged pitch, international call ups etc or is it just a hidden agenda point you are making trying to find a reason not to show respect

But you are talking about things postponed with little other option. This weekend 10000% did not need postponing. Showed by the Rugby board. I raised a glass to QE last night. I'll watch the service next week if I'm free to do so. Other than that. No. life goes on. As shown by King Charles who said goodbye to his mum yesterday and tomorrow takes over as King.

if games were to be postponed next week would make far more sense and give people time to plan accordingly and that would be the sports mark of respect. EFL and PL got this badly wrong and probably will realise by now they misjudged it but too late now

Match postponed. on 17:03 - Sep 9 with 1009 views | LRB84UK | I don't know what other matches we're due to be played this weekend but I think some of it will be down to policing. I should imagine they need a much bigger police presence in London as a lot of people will be traveling there this weekend. There would have been sending offs in numerous games, var arguments and trouble between fans. There is no way we would have got through pre match, the game and then post match with no trouble. If fans can't behave themselves against Barnsley there is no way they would behave against a (sort of) local rival. Fighting between fans is no way to show any kind of respect to the queen. There might have been other games that could have been red flags for behaviour and police are needed elsewhere.

No. Policing etc wasn't part of that decision. It was solely about if the FA wanted to allow games on or to in their own opinion show respect by cancelling the weekend.

I think this is far more about the reputation of the game and the optics of a weekend of 'business as usual' behaviour by certain minorities of fans during a period of national mourning. Govt. left it to the organisations to make a business decision, and football's reputation here is somewhat in the mud after the Euros fiasco. If social media is flooded with videos of young fans (who likely don't give a flying one about the monarchy) disregarding minutes silence, being drunk / violent, it's not a great look for the brand. Disappointed as this would've been my first game at PR this season & I've already travelled. I was bringing my mum who hasn't seen a game live since we were humped 0-6 by Liverpool. Plan find a decent pub instead! [Post edited 9 Sep 2022 17:29]

So according to you reasons every game then has to be postponed during the mourning period before the funeral. If that happens what a mess. The EFL will lose 3 games. I actually think there would be no issue at all. Most people respect what's happened and there would be enough about to pull anyone into line who is acting a knob. I just think its a badly misjudged decision personally

By way of reminder and correction for some, it is not The King, not The Royal Family, not even the much loved Government that has asked football to pause, it is some unknown unreachable people apparently responsible for football administration at the Premier League and Football League. Football has not been cancelled either, games held over this weekend will be played at a later time. For me, I could be persuaded either way, but please stop the drivel. Meanwhile, use the time, take a moment for yourself, consider others, take some time with friends or relatives, think about your life and those you hold most dear, go for a walk, look for a new job, reimagine your career, whatever, but above all enjoy the 90 minutes that has been gifted by the unreachables this weekend ðŸ‘🻠

Strange take. Football bottled it and went early, and considering it was up to the relevant footballing bodies to make a decision, with the permission of the government it really has to be one of the most ridiculous decisions going.

I also suspect this is true. Imagine the frothing if Liverpool fans reacted to the national anthem in the way they have done recently. I can imagine the football hierarchy wouldn't want to have to try and explain those optics to this government in particular. I'm not surprised games are off but don't agree with it. However, the grassroots decision is ludicrous.

Maybe a 3.15 KO with minutes silence than a minutes applause or whatever was deemed appropriate . For me a very poor decision as i am sure her majesty would not have wanted it .

Well following non league as you might expect, a fair share would go into the much needed fund pot of the host side, i'd venture to a pub nearby, probably a newsagents to grab a fresh vape juice, newspaper. etc, catch an early kick off and go into a local shop to pick up anything the wife wants before i get home to watch i follow, . It varies of course depending on my weekend plans and how i choose to do it. But hope that answers your question. And also to note, there is a family business of ours which is in prime street location for weekend football, on a saturday, it takes a full weeks income in 1 day which starts the moment it opens and parents begin to take their kids to their morning football matches.. So yes, missing a massive amount of finances this weekend. [Post edited 10 Sep 2022 10:18]

This 'lack of respect' thing people throw around is pathetic. Frimmers is a bit of a chief, sure, but nothing in his post here is disrespectful. I see the rugby is going ahead. Do you think everyone going is disrespectful? Her Maj wouldn't have wanted footy or anything else to be cancelled. It's a typically cowardly decision by the football authorities. It is nothing to do with 'respect'... lack of respect would be people being rude about the royal family at this inappropriate time.
