Fractiousness on 17:40 - Sep 21 by Ryorry | Yep, good work there ðŸ‘. Perhaps Phil n Gav would agree to accept a catch-all phrase, which could serve as a vent for all TTDers wanting to let off steam from their fevered brows - ie "Fract off" |
The mathematicians of the board may object but "Fractal" could be useful here. Like anal, perhaps, but more splintered.

Fractiousness on 10:34 - Sep 22 with 870 views | ArnoldMoorhen | At times over the past couple of weeks I have let off steam by saying things re the Monarchy which I strongly believe but which I would not be able to say publicly because of my job role. This is my only (partially) anonymous safe-space. I really strongly objected to a board post telling us what we could and couldn't say on the day of the Funeral, and it made me want to post a few thoughts outlining my revived wish for an elected Head of State. That post wasn't written by you or Gav, and yet presumed to tell us all what we could and couldn't say, way beyond the Terms and Conditions of the site. And it got tons of up votes. Had you posted it, I would have grumpily accepted it. Had you closed the board for the duration of the Funeral, I would have understood. But it wasn't for someone to become self-appointed Head Teacher and tell us all to sit up straight and shut up. Anyway, I responded with some snark, but I wasn't personal about the OP. I can't apologise for that. Free speech is important and those of us who have been around for a long time know that you are incredibly fair minded as a site owner/moderator I probably have contributed to the overall level of fractiousness, and am sorry if that has resulted in more hassles for you personally. But this Forum as a place where some of us are able to express our real thoughts when our employers may not allow us to elsewhere, and in particular as an alternative media during the selective period of National Mourning, performs an incredibly valuable function. Free speech versus community togetherness... Some of us found the atmosphere of the last couple of weeks so stifling elsewhere that we may have needed to push things on here. And some of us post drunk, too!

I think the message on the day was just to save your anti-monarchy feelings for another day, so that people who wanted to mourn or pay respects could do so. You have another 364 days of the year that you can slag off the royal family.

….the post wasn’t intended to tell people what they can and can’t say, I have absolutely no right to do that (despite being accused of being the board police). It was merely a suggestion that everyone could have a day of from sniping at people and trying to get a rise out of them. It wasn’t aimed at pro or anti royalist, it was a suggestion to all sides. It went quite well on the whole, and it got a rare upvote from Gav. Now, get on with your work or I’ll keep you in over your lunch break. X

But where does that end, and who decides? I didn't post during the Funeral, but the whole day? Why? Who says? I'm an adult, and I made my own choice. And it's really weird for the "utmost respect must be shown" police to be on a lower league football message board as a means of showing their respects. Telling people what they can and can't say. Checking up on others. All very East Germany under Honecker. Surely you can see an irony in that? For the record, I fully support the right of protest of the person silently holding a placard in Edinburgh, or the man who shouted out one sentence at a pompous civic ceremony in Oxford. The mourning Royal Family were not present in either case. I am supportive of the arrest of the young man who shouted abuse at Prince Andrew as he and the rest of the Royal Family followed the late Queen's coffin into St Giles Cathedral. Abusing people as they go into Funerals is incredibly shtty behaviour, and definitely a breach of the peace. And I don't think I have "slagged off" the Royal Family at all. Maybe Prince Andrew at times, if simply listing things he has done counts as "slagging off". I am vocally supportive of Prince Harry and Meghan, for example, which I hope will please all true royalists.
