This absolutely reeks of being planned in advance. What was Qatar going to do if FIFA said no? Be a bit late to just cancel the whole thing.

And how much have the bunged FIFA’s way to make it happen

Not happening. The 1000s of migrant workers (some of whom paraded as fans this week) will am sure be available to fill any empty seats.

Some of them will be pretty badly decomposed by now. Not sure that is a good look.

No beers or queers then !!!

Loved the Budweiser tweet, makes up for the taste/lack of.

It's all going as expected....I remember when Qatar and Russia won ,when it really should have been England and the USA for soooooooooooooo many reasons that even back then it was obvious in 2011ish what a corrupt setup it all was.....Brazil and South Africa before with hindsight ... it's clear too about those editions.

Poll: Is it an issue for you that the new England manager is foreign ?

The bigger story from this is about what else could they suddenly turn back on? All along there's been vague reassurances about LBGTQ+ people being allowed to be seen together in public in contradiction of usual laws but what if Qatar suddenly say their laws on homosexuality will be enforced to the full extent?

FCDO (and our equivalents) are bulking up staffing, as realistic outcome is a LOT of people are going to be in jail throughout the tournament.

Police interpretation of laws in Qatar can be very individual

I think that's wide of the mark and a bit insulting - people are capable of making their own decisions.

'They knew what they were voting for eh...?'

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I think Qatar have a chance of qualifying from that group, the players have been training for this, for many, many years.

And if they don't qualify they'll probably be stoned to death anyway

"What do you mean the dictatorship running the country hosting this massive sportwashing event (the logistics of which killed thousands of migrants) can just change the rules and do whatever they like at any point whatsoever?!

Nothing I have heard in the last decade could have possibly warned me that personal freedoms, liberties and rights are at the bottom of their priorities! This is an outrage. All I wanted was to enjoy the footy, not suffer all this politics business!"

Pronouns: He/Him/His. "Imagine being a heterosexual white male in Britain at this moment. How bad is that. Everything you say is racist, everything you say is homophobic. The Woke community have really f****d this country."

Good to see you back. Presumably Moose Enterprises Inc. declined the offer to be Official Body Bag Supplier to the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup?

We are supplying the lashes that shall rain down upon the sunburnt backs of any Englishmen caught drunk on whatever alcohol they have smuggled into the country stashed up their bottoms.

Pretty much what I said. But they mean it seriously.

The whole thing is a complete farce, from the very beginning.

An insulting one at that.

Everyone is getting in on the disgrace though. Beaks are well and truly wet.

For example, David Beckham showing his true colours of late - from making sure he was photographed as much as possible while lining up with the common man to gawp at the Queen's coffin ("This'll land that knighthood for sure!") to taking 150 million from a dictatorship to tell the world with a straight face that Qatar is some kind of exciting and modern dreamland his reputation should take a massive ding, yet we all know that it won't.

First they housed the Bangladeshi workers in steel shipping containers with no ventilation in 100 degree heat, and I said nothing, because I am not a Bangladeshi.

Then they arrested, beat and raped LGBTQ+ people, and I said nothing, because I am not an LGBTQ+ person

Then they came for the Beers, and all the people who said "There's no such thing as White privilege" suddenly said "That's not fair! They can't stop us having a few pints at the match!"

And anyone with half a brain just shrugged.

I followed England for Euro 2016 and it was truly excellent as an experience (bar Marseille). England fans get a lot of pelters. In my experience it is mostly well deserved but there is a decent core of people who just follow England sensibly in the same way the vast majority of Town fans operate.

No doubt lots of these people, having begrudgingly accepted the normal FIFA shambles, will be attempting to make the best of something that they have probably sunk an enormous amount of cash into at a hard time. I hope they can at least have a vaguely acceptable experience of what is a truly disgraceful farce.

I've got to say I'm struggling to get excited about flicking iPlayer on for Monday.

I know that was then, but it could be again..
