The bigger story from this is about what else could they suddenly turn back on? All along there's been vague reassurances about LBGTQ+ people being allowed to be seen together in public in contradiction of usual laws but what if Qatar suddenly say their laws on homosexuality will be enforced to the full extent? |
FCDO (and our equivalents) are bulking up staffing, as realistic outcome is a LOT of people are going to be in jail throughout the tournament.

I followed England for Euro 2016 and it was truly excellent as an experience (bar Marseille). England fans get a lot of pelters. In my experience it is mostly well deserved but there is a decent core of people who just follow England sensibly in the same way the vast majority of Town fans operate.
No doubt lots of these people, having begrudgingly accepted the normal FIFA shambles, will be attempting to make the best of something that they have probably sunk an enormous amount of cash into at a hard time. I hope they can at least have a vaguely acceptable experience of what is a truly disgraceful farce.
