Brazil got sloppy and thought they had it won, showboating and goading Croatia, Argentina thought they had it won

That simply didn't happen, there was absolutely no showboating or goading in the final minutes of the two matches.

The constant niggle between the teams was all part of it. The football itself was pretty average, but the drama and the emotion was off the scale.

Absolutely loved it! Although my half-Dutch brother-in-law is still in bits this morning.

Yep, the most blatant inconsistency I have ever seen simply laughed off by the commentary team as he's Messi! It matters too. He was, indeed, booked later In the game and that would have been him off and suspended for the semi. Hope he gets booked in the semi and misses the final.

Pretty sure cards get wiped after the semis? Could be wrong but thought they changed the rules.

For those who never experienced the delights of the Mini Metro I would describe it as:

Rubbish to drive not helped by lorry style steering wheel angle. Wheezy, slow with its ancient engine, rubbish stir the pudding gearbox, noisy, poor ride. The build quality was appalling, even by the standards of the day. They fell apart, rusted, leaked, you name it. Reliability? Nah. Awful. On the upside, the tailgate was useful. Well, until the gas struts failed.

We had a pool car Metro at work and a colleague I travelled to work with had two or three. The last one was a Vanden Plas Metro. Posh velour seats and a bit of wood inside it. It was the most unreliable of the lot. Even the paint fell off.

Back in the early 80s, the Mk1 Fiesta was around, numerous Japanese small cars (rusted like no tomorrow, but never broke down or lost oil), the jerries were producing the Polo. French, the Renault 5, the Italians a number of small cars which despite falling to bits were at least good to drive.

It’s no wonder British Leyland went down the pan. I’m amazed they managed to stifle the laughter selling rubbish like that (add in the Allegro, Princess, Ital/Marina …oh dear).

Ah, the dear old Princess! Didn’t the advert boast that ‘one day all car will be made this way’?

My very first drive on a road (well, legally anyway) was in a Metro. I booked my first driving lesson with an instructor who had just taken possession of one a week after they were came to market. I was well chuffed to have driven a car that was flagged up as the future of the British motoring industry!

Check out the overhead coverage later in the thread - it shows a bit of context! It shows the Dutch players trying to wind the Argie pen taker up as he walks forward. Very, very much against the spirit of things. I’m not surprised they then reacted as they did.

Yeah it was pretty obvious on the tv at the time that the Dutch were trying to wind them up - they had someone booked for it!

I know people don’t like Argentina but some have lost the plot more than the ref last night!

Indeed.

I'd want to rub it in in response to that too.

It was very strange all round from the Dutch. Yes, you are right. They did goad, but the Argies aided by a hopeless ref had been ‘at it’ (feigned injuries, diving etc) all game. That’s no excuse and not rising above it didn’t help them.

The other strange aspect was that they’d been ineffectual for 80 mins. Hadn’t threatened at all passing to nowhere. They went direct and really put the wind up the Argies then in extra time reverted to defensive aimless passing again. Why not carry on lobbing it in if the Argues were struggling to deal it?

Aside from the s’housery, who did what, Ref, pitiful commentators the Argies were by far the better team and deserved to get through.

Your description of the Metro is perfect.... it sounds just like the one I had for a few months back in the day.

My one was a "commercial"... the economy model with no back seats. It had a fuel tank the size of a kitten's urine sample jar and I was forever running out of gas ....

I used to commute to London in it, up the M4 from Reading. It was just perfect for the nose-to-tail rolling car park every morning....until it overheated and cracked the cylinder head one sunny morn

Seen that before, very badly clipped photo, the wider angle one I then saw shows them looking at the rest of the coaching staff and subs rather than opposition

Remembering how Colombia played in that match and the number of kicks, stamps and butts they got away with, I wouldn't have blamed the English players for giving it large at the end of that shootout.

my impression was both teams were goading each other during the penalties, and just a continuation of the angst of the game, there was something the Argentine keeper did after Weghorst scored his pen that looked almost like those last minute goal confrontations by players refusing to give back the ball.

but as neither the tv director wanted to show us, and as has been mentioned in the other thread the commentators had given up commentating on the game long before it reached this stage.

we're none the wiser of who was goading who worst, who was to blame, who was at fault.

all I think is how you win games is as important as how you lose, Id be pretty disappointed if England players reacted as Argentina are doing there, it is a classless reaction, and I hope Croatia give them one hell of a game, and get a decent ref.

Ahh, happy memories. Check this out:

Hilarious given how tragic the apology of a car was, before we get to the advert itself.

Wonder if, should we meet them in the final, their players will be reminded of Sir Alf’s comments about Argentine players back in1966.

"We have still to produce our best, and this is not possible until we meet the right sort of opponents, and that is a team that comes out to play football and not act as animals,"
