Gary Neville giving it to one of the biggest Tory.. on 10:43 - Dec 19 by DJR | I still don't think a message about UK politics, whoever the messenger, is appropriate for a football programme. We must also not forget that footballers aren't generally known for their political nous. And do we really want, say, Brenner asking Kayden Jackson for his views on anarcho-syndicalism? |
What makes you say "footballers aren't generally known for their political nous"? Is that because they hold views you don't approve of? Plenty of footballers are clever and eloquent. As much as any other sector of entertainment where people express their views too. Jeremy Clarkson being a case in point. Would it be inappropriate to discuss a Government ban on clubs participating in European competition? Politics affects sport and to ban discussion or mention of it on sports coverage seems a bit extreme to me.

DJR is a committed Labour Party member if I’m not mistaken. So it’s not that he disapproves of Neville’s views.

Fair enough but still curious why he thinks footballers should be censored unless he thinks the same of other entertainment sectors too. Politics affects all areas of life.

Gary Neville giving it to one of the biggest Tory.. on 11:03 - Dec 19 by GlasgowBlue | He’s not just a sub paying member. He’s campaigned alongside Starmer and spoken at conference. Most people would be apoplectic if a high profile Tory did the same. He used a captive audience to deliver a political message. That doesn’t sit right with me no matter which side of the political divide they come from. And he didn’t limit his comments to the situation in Qatar. He broadened them to the current strikes in the UK. [Post edited 19 Dec 2022 11:05]

Some may be apoplectic when such happens but I think the majority would engage with what was said and disagree strongly with it, rather than say they should be censored and unable to speak their views.

It's got nothing to do with the views they hold, although I imagine many more footballers vote Tory than Labour. The fact that, to my knowledge, no former footballer in this country has gone on to be involved in party politics at a local or national level merely proves my point, although it does look like Gary Neville has ambitions in this regard. Clearly there can be an interaction between politics and sport - the Qatar World Cup is evidence of this - but in my view there is no case for expressing UK party political views on a football programme. I would conclude by saying that I am a Labour Party member, so fully support what Gary Neville actually said.

The thing is Gary Neville has all sorts of platforms to put forward his views, so I think the idea of him being censored is a bit over the top. But he should go on Twitter or the Daily Politics, and not a football programme, if he wants to make his case.

Fair enough. However, I disagree entirely on the main point. We should be encouraging more engagement in politics instead of suggesting it is separate from other areas of society. I get your point, I just disagree with it. Footballers involved in politics: Sol Campbell "aligned himself with the policies of the Conservative Party, the former England international revealed in 2014 that he was considering running for office, partially in a bid to help secure the 'black vote' for the Tories. The following year, Campbell put himself forward in the race for the Conservative nomination for Mayor of London, but he ultimately failed to make the shortlist." Neville Southall, Gary Neville and Marcus Rashford have all got involved in politics to varying degrees. David Icke is another prominent example albeit one that supports your "not known for their nous" comment. Hakan Sukur and Romario are among a number of foreign players to go into politics in their own countries. Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko stood for Putin's party.

Fair enough too. I think we're singing from the same song sheet, but merely disagreeing a bit on tactics.

I appreciate this is stretching it a bit but Attlee turned out for Fleet Town FC. Before he became PM I should add.

And it took until 1980 for Scotland and 1982 for Northern Ireland for homosexuality to become decriminalised.

Hard to disagree with his message. But back in his playing days he set himself up as a Ltd company (Tiger Sports) reportedly in order to offset expenses on his earnings instead of PAYE like many footballers. It does stick in the throat a bit. I wonder how much tax he legally avoided whilst railing about tax cuts to the rich?

He's also rather controversial up here with his property dealings, but I think the hypocrisy and whatabouttery on both sides is interesting. There seems to be no denial of what he's saying but the basis for his legitimacy in saying it. Wright was nodding along and agreeing throughout but that seems to have gotten lost. Tories certainly weren't shy about lecturing players on taking a knee, wearing poppies etc.

It's perhaps worth pointing out that it's a bit much for lee anderson, the son of a coal miner, to proclaim the policies of the rich. Funny how tories never see it like that.
