Hands up if you saw Pele on 07:36 - Dec 30 with 2834 views | Lord_Lucan | Out of the "Greats" I think I've only seen Cruyff and Best. I don't remember seeing even Ronaldo or Gascoigne - and I would 100% put Gascoigne up there, in fact I think he was actually underrated. I saw Best play his last game for Man U which was at QPR. I know John Barnes is a bit off skew but I have never witnessed a crowd "Hum" as much as when I watched him play for Liverpool while standing in The Kop, every time he got the ball everyone hummed in anticipation, it was incredible really. As for Pele, well to be honest I think I am like most people inasmuch as I've only seen a few TV clips. I was always told he was the best footballer ever and I am sure he was brilliant but I do wonder if it's all a bit overblown, I don't know. For me it has to be Maradona.

Hands up if you saw Pele on 07:48 - Dec 30 with 2798 views | blueislander | Never saw him play live, but I did see the 1958 World Cup final on TV ,Everyone was marvelling that a 17 year old. We didn’t see much of him in the 1966 World Cup because he just got kicked every time he was near the ball. It is always debatable who is the GOAT , but he would certainly be up there.

Pele, Cruyff and Best all slightly before my time. Recent stars: Saw Ronaldo at Euros 2004 when we lost to Portugal but don't remember him tbh. Gazza and Barnes I saw at Italia90 and Euro96, both special clearly. England seemed to have a thing of should we / shouldn't we with talented youngsters, Gazza (90) Owen (98) and Rooney (04) all proving worthy of a spot despite managers' hesitancy. Maradona I think was an unused player in 78, at 17 deemed too young. Wonder what he'd have done at that age? For me Pele and Maradona are on a pedestal above Messi and Ronaldo. So far ahead of any around them in their time, a time when players did all they could to kick lumps out of them which probably cost Pele and Brazil a 4th world cup.

Hands up if you saw Pele on 08:51 - Dec 30 with 2711 views | ITFC_Forever | No, but bro-in-law and parents-in-law met him. Bro-in-law was a youth team player for Chelsea in 1997 when they won the FA Cup, and that evening, the club held the usual FA Cup winners meal at a hotel in London. Bro-in-law and his parents were invited, and Pele was the guest of honour, so they all had pictures taken with him.

Hands up if you saw Pele on 09:02 - Dec 30 with 2673 views | StochesStotasBlewe | Similar to Lucan. Saw Best, Cruyff, Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore and a host of other world class players. For all of Pele's magnificent goalscoring shown on TV though, my main memory of the man is the save that Gordon Banks made from his header in the 1970 World Cup.

Live, I saw Cruyff, Best, Ronaldo, Bobby Charlton, Gascoigne, amongst others. Personally I thought that Cruyff was a bit overrated and Charlton underrated

Hands up if you saw Pele on 09:26 - Dec 30 with 2589 views | Churchman | Sadly I never got to see the greatest footballer of them all Pele play live. Nor Cruyff come to that. Those I did see were George Best (second only to Pele), Moore, Charlton, Beckenbauer. Honourable mentions to Ardiles, Colin Bell, Klinsmann, most of the 66 World Cup winners, Denis Law, the great Leeds and Liverpool teams of the 70s/80s, Gascoigne, Greaves and Giles Coke. I’d love to have seen Messi and Maradona in their prime. Ronaldo? Great player but he always irritated me so not bothered.

Only ever saw Beckenbauer on TV, but he would be first pick for my greatest ever XI.

Probably didn't fully appreciate it at the time but to see a West Ham team with Moore, Peters and Hurst, and a Man Utd team with Best, Law and Charlton was a real privilege. Around that time, my dad knew the man who took photos for the club, and I remember he gave us black and white photos of Best, Law and Charlton from one of the games. Sadly, I am not sure whatever became of them. My dad also got the autographs of Don Revie and the great Leeds team of the early 70s when travelling on the same train as them when they were on their way to a game at Ipswich. Indeed, I didn’t think much about it at the time but yes it was a privilege to see Hurst, Moore and Peters in that West Ham side. I also saw them play for England along with the greatest goalkeeper of all, Gordon Banks. A player that followed Peters and co that has disappeared from memory is Trevor Brooking. Like Bell, he was a Rolls Royce footballer and on his day almost unplayable.

I mentioned this before. https://www.rte.ie/archives/2014/0609/622506-pele-attracts-30-000-to-dalymount/ I was a young boy like those in the footage when I saw him in Dalymount Park. That Santos team, playing in white, looked like football gods to an impressionable youngster. The football clips show that they played with the opposition that day à la the Harlem Globetrotters.

You could add Greaves, Gilzean and Mackay at Spurs, Dobing, Eastham and Greenhough at Stoke, Dougan, wagstaff and the Jehovah witness at wolves, Paine, Channon and Davies at Southampton, Osgood,Cooke and Hudson at Chelsea. The list is endless in that era

Hands up if you saw Pele on 12:24 - Dec 30 with 2274 views | RevAdrian | Yes! Saw him in 1973 at Craven Cottage in a Fulham v Santos friendly, though no idea why the match was being played. I was in London at the time and just went along. Pele was 32 by then. I remember how utterly luid and comfortable he looked when he ran with the ball, almost as if it really was attached to him in some way, and how he jinked away from challenge but always seemed to then be in a better place to continue moving forward. He scored a remarkable penalty where the keeper was completely rooted and even most of the crowd thought he had actually struck it to the opposite side to the one he had. I think he stayed behind after the game to sign loads of autographs for kids.

Terry Paine was a superb payer. And a World Cup winner. Although not in the same league as Pele. [Post edited 30 Dec 2022 12:33]

I saw John Charles play. Arguably the best British footballer of his time. Although he was playing for Hereford when I saw him.

Hands up if you saw Pele on 12:38 - Dec 30 with 2229 views | ElephantintheRoom | I doubt it - unless someone took in a New York Cosmos game. I doubt anyone saw him cheating either. Curiously he seems best remembered for three misses in the 1970 World Cup - although it is perhaps unkind to refer to ‘that’ Banks save as a miss.

Hands up if you saw Pele on 12:41 - Dec 30 with 2218 views | Vic | I saw Cruyff (man marked out of the game by Roger O) at Portman Road, and Maradona at Wembley (he didn’t really impress me and remember Kenny Samson nutmegging him to huge laughs around the ground). GOAT for me is between Pele (who I didn’t see) Maradona and Messi. Sorry, but I just can’t put R7 in the list as despite his goals he doesn’t have the same game impact as the other 3.

Ive seen Messi play and score a goal, and given how many people claim to have been at the game I thought we'd all seen Ronaldo play at Inter Milan against the Town. Pele never saw play, but I do think I saw him at a distance once at an airport or being whisked through as some VIP at a sports event, something like that where you kind of go wow that was Pele.
