Anyone had any acupuncture? 10:32 - Jan 25 with 4853 viewsGavTWTD

I've currently got tennis elbow and my physio couldn't help me after several sessions. Both her and my GP recommended acupuncture so I had a session on monday.

I can't say its helped but I'm not expecting miracles after one session but she did say that I'd have a good night's sleep that night or the night after. I'm a terrible sleeper but I slept like a log last night.

Anyone have any experiences with acupuncture? I was very sceptical but wanted to try it before cortisone.

I had an issue with my rotator cuff in shoulder and was very painful. I had a cortisone injection and it did the job. However, if it comes back again, I might consider accupuncture next time having read the replies here.

I wasn't offered accupuncture as an option, even though I went private.

Save your money and just do your rehab. Even the injection into your shoulder was only a big dose of pain relief and not a 'fix' for the underlying cause.

Not sure there's any evidence that acupuncture does anything for tennis elbow.

Tennis elbow (or lateral epicondylitis) is an overload of the common extensor tendon where it originates at the elbow, causing it to enter a reactive phase, and eventually a degeneration if not treated properly.

Treatment really just involves boring stuff: load management and avoid aggravation; strengthen with boring exercise (wrist extensions); stuff like wearing an elbow strap (at the top of the forearm) to offload; even ice cube massage.

The first one on that list is the key. If you keep irritating and overworking the tendon it will never heal.

Should add that it can take as long as 6-12 months in some cases.

Yeah, I really wasn't sure on that bit. All my injury issues are elsewhere.

Yes, when I had a double leg/ankle break I went to a recovery specialist who primarily helped people back from motorbike breaks. I had about 6 different things done in the session and I thought they were all nonsense going in. When I finished each one I noticed no improvement. I was expecting to notice no improvement with the acupuncture, but it felt like I had a new ankle. Range of movement instantly felt better. Walking up and down the stares was easier. I had it a few times as part of course of treatment. It is possible the subsequent sessions were placebo, as I was then expecting it to get better and believed it would. But the first one was cause and effect, and really took me by surprise.

I've had both shoulders injected at different times and both worked. I was able to exercise after and to date it's not come back after a few years.

Yeah I've also had the disgusting teas for colds and flus, and the bleeding treatment too (they get a small tube full of needles and "stamp" somewhere where the skin is thin and bleed you like a medieval Lord for a bit).

Had acupuncture where muscles have relaxed a bit, had it where I was seeing and smelling colours and thought I was tripping.

I think as a topical treatment that can cure injuries it's decent enough. When people start claiming to cure cancer or reverse infertility then they;re best avoided.

Fair enough! They do have a big anti-inflammatory effect. Normally it's done as an adjunct to physio but you've had positive results by itself which is good.

I once had it for arthritis in my ankle Doctor suggested it so i went and was very anxious not knowing nothing about it but she put the heated pins all over my ankle about 15/20 or so and you just relax for about 30 minutes when she came back and removed them it did feel eased slightly but after a day or so the pain returned i went for 4 occasions and the same thing happened.
I do believe for certain treatments i’m sure it could work clever old stuff had it done by a Chinese woman no harm in it pretty painless to be honest good luck.

Having an almost pathological fear of injections I did try it once - it didn't work

I saw a physio for sciatica and neck pain and had several acupuncture sessions. I was a total sceptic before but it had an immediate effect and with physio sorted the problem out never to return, so I say give it a go. Plus you get the bonus of telling people you had a little prick in you.

Definitely worked for me on a very sore achilles after I had tried loads of other treatments.

You will be a while waiting for an injection. Took my missus 9 months to get hers, 6 months waiting for an MRI then 3 months for an appointment.

I’ve suffered both Tennis & Golfers elbow in the last few years. The only treatment which worked was rest. Stop doing whatever is causing it. That might mean for up to a year. It struck me when I went back to Golf & started to hit a lot of balls on the practice range. Used to hit hundreds & hundreds when younger, but an older body can’t do that anymore.

I've had it from former Town physio Dave Williams - a claim to fame...!

Can't really say if it worked or not as was just part of ongoing treatment after an ankle op, but certainly didn't make it worse

I've also had acupuncture after ankle ligament reconstruction.

I did find after sessions my ankle felt a little less stiff and mobile for a few days after but can't say if it had any long-term benefits.

It certainly did no harm and found it quite relaxing as well as a bit of a temporary relief, like i'd get from a period of stretching, but not sure that on it's own is worth the cost.

My first experience of acupuncture was the day after rupturing my ACL when the father of a Chinese fellow student placed a dozen or so needles in me. It was like someone threw a switch and instantly killed the pain. It lasted for the two days it took to get a medical consult.

I learned to practise acupuncture on animals (horses, dogs, cats) and have used it for twenty years. Animals are honest. If a leg stops hurting they stop limping. If it doesn’t, they don’t. I had enough positive results to convince me it was a worthwhile therapy. Many patients dozed off during a fifteen minute treatment session; only a few were untreatable.

Acupuncture is a useful complementary treatment for mostly musculo-skeletal conditions and superb for treating myofascial trigger points whose pain can be crippling. It should never be viewed as a total replacement for other supportive modalities like physiotherapy, appropriate surgery, osdteopathy etc. It is a help - not a cure all.

There is considerable scientific evidence to explain how it works:- Release of endorphins, of locally active anti-inflammatory substances, blocking of C-fibre pain signals, etc. The difficulty is proving it in clinical trials because it is hard to find a satisfactory “sham” needling procedure to act as a control. And it doesn’t work in every case - as can be said for most therapies.

My experience convinces me that it has positive results consistently enough to warrant its use as an aid to treatment and importantly it very, very, rarely does harm - although a woman footballer recently had a bad experience from a misplaced needle as I understand.

A sceptical colleague, crippled with tennis elbow and unable to work , finally relented to try acupuncture and grudgingly confessed that it really made a difference. He returned to full mobility in a few weeks. You could argue that he was going to get better in time anyway but his path to recovery became much less painful after the first two sessions.

I didn't think GPs were supposed to recommend acupuncture as the vast majority of scientific studies show that it does nothing above the level of placebo but perhaps there are some new studies I've not seen.

So essentially, if you believe it will help then it might help. Probably slept well as it's quite relaxing to just lay there doing nothing during a session. If it's working for you then I'd keep doing it!

SB

"Essentially" you seem to be saying you might be wrong but are probably correct. Has anything in this thread changed that view?
