Thanks Liz on 16:13 - May 23 by StokieBlue | Seems odd to suggest one analysis was wrong by pointing to another analysis by the same people as evidence that it was wrong when you believe they are always wrong. SB |
Not really. The one consistency of IMF forecasts is that they have had to revise the UK upwards every year since 2016. That's why I am surprised that intelligent people gleefully post their negative predictions at the beginning of the year as if they are a statement of fact.

Perhaps the thread could be re-titled "Thanks to Rishi for proving the IMF wrong". I doubt it though.

If growth does improve more than expected before the next election, it strikes me that there could be parallels with 1997, with Major then, and Sunak now, getting no credit for turning things round because of previous events and mistakes, and a general feeling that the Tories' time is up after a long period in office.

I'm not sure going from worst to second worst is really a cause for celebration. Fundamentally I doubt anyone really cares whether GDP growth is 0.5% or 0.7% or 1.2% if wage growth is stagnant and food is still 20% more expensive. Fun for the political geeks among us, including myself though. It's good that we look to be having a little more growth though, especially after the damage Truss caused.

I don't even nearly know enough about economics to say the following, but I wonder if current record high immigration is boosting these figures a bit? It would make sense as an explanation of how there could be growth for the country, but not individuals within, given more or less everyone feels more skint right now.

I am no expert either, but this hot off the press suggests immigration does boost growth. On the other hand, the following (also hot off the press) appears to be an example of the adverse impact of Brexit on growth. The funny thing about GDP is that increased hospital visits in winter apparerently add to growth. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Ooh look children, rightie is misrepresenting the available information, yet again. And the irony of this cap doffer using IMF predictions, when he has previously rubbished them, will not be missed. There are 27 countries in the EU, so it is not unlikely the UK may record better growth figures for one month. Not all, but one country. And no context to that either - as almost all five years old s will grow more than almost everyone on here. But by righties thinking, it means they are taller than us all. So shall we have a look https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn02784/ The trick there is to not look at the publishe figures by the IMF, but to believe our resident cap doffer. Rather like ignoring the facts and trusting something written on the side of a bus. All really sad when you think about it. Much as with the misinformation spouted about Braverman*by righties - which turned out to be lies as well. Surely there must be more than a 'them's our betters' mentality that causes such blind subservience to the point of spouting/posting blatant lies ? *why Sunak is carrying out an investigation himself when he has an independent adviser to do this for him, and which sits rather uneasily with bleats on here and elsewhere that the media were wrong to focus on this breach of ministerial when there was Sunaks visits to Iceland and Japan to focus on, never mind the waiting lists, sht in the rivers, potholes, failing railways.......perhaps it is important after all, as non cap doffers knew

Thanks Liz on 10:09 - Jan 31 by blueasfook | Did you watch Newsnight last night? There was an interesting debate on Brexit. I think the main issue has been the lack of new trade deals agreed. Tories are guilty for that. Once we do our trade deals with various other countries then things should be better. Sadly the tories have been too busy infighting and done sod all about where Britain goes next after Brexit. |
Read this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/All-Countries-Weve-Ever-Invaded/dp/0752479695 Then let me know which countries will be queueing up to do us a favour! One of the many real tragedies of Brexit was that its most enthusiastic supporters were so blissfully unaware that there would be so many countries quite happy to watch us sink, and in no rush to reach out a hand to help us. The problem with the "We just need to do our own trade deals" line is that it takes two sides to do a deal, and all the other countries know that they can wait until we are more desperate, so that they get a better deal.

Can I state, that I am not surprised that a thread that was 2.75months old, was never revisited. There can’t be that many threads over that timescale that do get revisited. I wonder, what percentage of threads of that age, do stay top of mind for people. Surely a person that is interested in stats and forecasting and looking back would calculate such a thing. Then over the summer we could have a quantifiable metric of surprise when threads are resumed.

You’re a strange one. You’re quite a prolific poster and so as in life, the louder ones get more attention. It’s not the first time you’ve concluded that other posters are obsessed by you - they aren’t, they are simply replying to you being a prolific poster. And then you make a big song-and-dance about div listing posters. Odd.

Without wanting to get involved in anything that may be considered a pile-on, isn't it also a bit odd to moan about people being obsessive when you have hunted out this thread and bumped it from January? I'm just trying to square the logic here. It could easily have been a new thread talking about the new analysis performed with new data. There was clearly only one reason to bump and old thread. It's not looking great buh. Personally, I hoped the sunlit uplands would have delivered us to a place ahead of Yemen and other war zones. Sweden though?! https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/NGDP_RPCH@WEO/OEMDC/ADVEC/WEOWORLD You're right of course that forecasts are only that and likely to be revised. I'm with you 100% on that. Scoring points off the precision of their predictions is pointless. But we don't really need to in this case. The general direction of travel is clear, with evidence that this experiment is failing coming in every day. It's about time we admitted is was a mistake and then we can actually start to plan to put things right. While people still try to defend it, we're donald ducked.
