Someone postage some footage at the time from behind the goal. Burns appears to start the incident by grabbing Johnson by the shoulders for no apparent reason. Johnson tries to shrug him off by throwing his arms back twice. I wasn't convinced from that that he used his elbow, and I can see why they'd appeal.

It would be an interesting one if they cannot use any fan footage as the assistant referee saw the incident but couldn't identify the player. For some reason, the FA have charged Johnson, effectively saying they have identified that he was the player involved. In the absence of footage proving the official to be mistaken (the FA tend to back their officials unless there is very clear evidence to the contrary) the only grounds for appeal could be mistaken identity. Would they have to offer up the genuine culprit if they used this defence? It seems to have a high risk of frivolous appeal to me but we will see.

So Wednesday have appealed on 12:44 - Feb 18 with 3843 views | Samuelowen88 | Seems a strange appeal, its not the argument is whether the incident occurred or not. The officials saw the incident, and couldn't identify. By whatever method they have now identified who they think the culprit was. So SW either have to admit it was him, offer up someone else with evidence (impossible), or prove beyond reasonable doubt that the offence in question never happened.

In my playing days I came up against an ex team mate who decided early on to leave his mark. The referee gave the foul against me much to my opponents surprise. “ Ref got it right Phil” I said, “ vicious tackle by my shins on your studs”. Referee then proceeded to book me for ungentlemanly conduct!

But maybe they feel its worth the risk.. An extra match ban, or the appeal is successful and he gets away with it... Probably worth the gamble..

In hockey, such clear dissent would always have been a card. We were once warned about how harsh the home umpire always is when playing in Lincolnshire. Sure enough, early in the match one of our defenders had the ball hit him on the shin inside the D and the umpire gave a short corner. Our player yelled "that's rub..." and the yellow card (a temporary sending off) was out before he could finish. As he made his way off, the defender added "of the green that is! That's all I was saying, that's the rub of the green!"

Being as he was only charged after fan footage was posted, I'd imagine they are not restricted to the ifollow footage. Also, the other ITFC cameras, (used for 'Town in 5') caught it.

Indeed, it is quite clear from video footage that he attempts to elbow Burns and misses, so throws the other arm and catches him with his elbow. Burns may have put his arms on him first but it is a contact sport and the officials did not see that as a foul. The assistant referee saw the offence and gave the penalty. All the footage supports what the assistant referee saw. Moore has not said what reason they are appealing the charge but there is no obvious reason. Perhaps there is something we have not considered but unless there is something very persuasive to contradict all of this, he will surely get an extra match ban for a frivolous appeal.
