You're the coach of an under 11s team playing 7 a side... 09:15 - Feb 24 with 2886 viewsgiant_stow

What formation and how much do you let everyone take a turn at being striker?

I was thinking play a 3 3 and swap each 3 from attack/defence for half each.

And finally remind the little sh1ts to pass to each other!

Sound OK?

Me neither - the club is fielding 3 teams and I'm just a parent volunteer who's been given one. Agreed on the occasional long punt up field, especially when the defenders aren't so good at passing. Nice one on the improvement of your daughter's team.

How long are the games? 7 a side tournaments are usually less than 10 mins.
I used to go all out attack to get the first goal and then defend the final third like crazy. Worked well until my lad hit a post in the semi-final shoot out!

In which case instruct the keeper to always play it short, the defence to never go long and make sure they have passed it back to the keeper at least once each move. Tell the keeper they shouldn't be afraid to beat their man and the strikers that possession is key and they should only shoot if they are sure they cannot miss.

That should do the trick.

In all seriousness, well done Ulla. Remember the important thing is that they enjoy it. Give the ones with the best eye for goal the chance to play up front and ensure they all realise defending and midfield work are just as important. Reward with praise the ones who make the most tackles, passes and saves as much as those who score the goals.

You need to play the biggest lad up front so the rest of um have someone to aim for when hoofing it up to the big lad.
More importantly Ull,s how are you planning to dress for your day of football management? I can only picture you going full big Ron Atkinson or gilet wearing Tim Sherwood

Funnily enough I've given this some thought: I'll be in full Sports Direct mode: waterproof and grey hoodie / tracky bottoms & big trainers - not boots. Nothing but the best..

My primary school team was quite successful with a 2-3-1/3-2-1 hybrid formation. Put the best player in the middle of the back three and give them license to move into midfield and break forward.

Works a treat.

5-0-1. Go for a draw, time waste, feign injuries and hoof it long to a big unit upfront.

This sounds like a job for ChatGPT, so I asked it for you.

As a language model, I strive to maintain a respectful and professional tone in all interactions. Therefore, I would suggest refraining from using derogatory terms to refer to children, even in jest. It is important to provide a positive and supportive environment for young athletes to thrive.

As for your question, a 3-3 formation can be a good choice for an under 11s team playing 7 a side soccer, as it allows for a balanced distribution of players between attack, midfield, and defense. However, it's important to consider the strengths and weaknesses of your players and adjust the formation accordingly.

Regarding playing time for the striker position, it's important to let everyone have a chance to play in that role, but it's also important to consider individual player's strengths and preferences. Some players may feel more comfortable in a different position, so it's important to rotate positions fairly and give each player the opportunity to try different roles.

Lastly, reminding players to pass to each other is a crucial aspect of team play, and encouraging good sportsmanship and positive communication can go a long way in developing a strong team dynamic.

When my lad played for a Saffron Walden kid’s team we once went to Somersham in the wilds of the fens where the 9 year old opposition had been drilled to play a Tony Adams Arsenal offside trap on the half way line of a full sized pitch. Might be worth a try.

Game 1- we won 3-0
Game 2 - lost 0-5 (against a much bigger older Sunday league playing team)
Game 3 - won 2-1
Final: lost 0-2 to the bigger older team.

Played 321 and made sure everyone got a turn up front

All told, very proud of the lads - they kept fighting and made a game of final despite getting thumped previously. Only a few tears, so all told, a success. Thanks again for the advice and good luck today (I mean that, just this once!)

Look after the ball, look after the ball, look after the ball. The kids will thank the coach for it when they're U15 and the teams that kicked it up for the quick/ big kid can't live with them as they stroke it around.

Indeed, kids playing smaller sided games on smaller pitches should be a big part of their development as players. From my experience, youngsters don't have much positional sense & your aim must be that they don't become too attracted to the ball.
