"Get rid" chants 09:51 - Mar 8 with 4410 viewsCityBlue

Am I the only one getting frustrated at the number of fans yelling "get rid of it" when Walton has the ball. Sure it is heart in the mouth stuff sometimes and there has been a couple of mishaps, but we need to be confident in our ability to play it out from the back. This draws their midfield onto us which opens up the channels which we then explore. Our opening goal was a case in question. Left Luongo with time to deliver a punishing through ball to Jackson.

The same people doing this are the same people who complained about Mick's teams playing hoofball.

It drives me crazy. It's McKenna's style of play and is working very well for us. Sure, it might eventually result in a mistake, but the odds of this happening are much greater when we've got our own fans putting the players under pressure

I thought Walton was particularly poor last night. He didn’t seem to know what to do and in fact often the ball came back to him when his pass put team under pressure.
He doesn’t take advantage of a quick clearance to Freddie who did very well in retaining the ball. Also Jackson was an ideal option as he had beating of their LB. Can’t always play out from back when there’s not enough options and opponents close us down quickly. Better teams will exploit this if Walton doesn’t make better use of the ball.

I took Ely_blue's ticket in the SARL (cheers!) and the moaning there was crazy. I put it down to there being no sense of depth from the stands behind the goals. It makes it look like we are under much more pressure than we actually are.

The thing that drove me mental was, on a couple of occasions:

* We pass the ball out of the back, everyone moans
* We lose the ball at about the halfway line
* We win the ball back, pass back to Walton
* Walton IS under pressure this time, kicks long
* Everyone goes "Wahey, oh he CAN kick it", "Why doesn't he do that the first time" etc.

Please, the first time there was no need to kick long, the second time he had to, and both times he acted accordingly.

If anyone sits in the SBRL or SARL and doesn't like how we pass out from the back, I urge you to sit in Magnus Upper for a game so you can see that we actually are quite good at it and your view probably affects your perception more than you realise!

So annoying. We need bravery on the ball at the back against sides like that, we need to bring them on to us and encourage the press so if / when we break it we've got space further up the pitch to create chances. It won't always work out and will lead to hairy moments but you can't sit there purring at sexy football on the occasions it works and berate the team on the occasions it doesn't.

Walton and Wolf are nerve wracking at times, but McK ain't gonna change the way we play so the fans need to get with the drill rather than aggravate a vicious circle of nerves to and from the pitch.

My fellow fans are the reason I've stopped going to away games in London. Maybe I'm just unlucky but I always seem to be near or next to a load of know-nothing gobsh1tes. It's not too bad in the upper north except when a day tripper turns up who hasn't seen any whole games in the flesh seemingly ever, let alone division three footy.

There was a moment in the first half when a few around me went from berating us and wanting it to go long to then applauding about 3 passes later as we broke the lines and went on the attack. Everyone knows how we play and we are bloody good at it. How many goals have we actually conceded from playing out from the back? I'm struggling to remember many at all.

but the anxious groaning doesn't help. Fans in the lower north and south stands can't really see what and what isn't on, either.

You're far from the only one.

The chap a few rows behind me in the North Upper is a prime example; "GET F***ING RID" any time a player dwelt on the ball in our defensive third for any more than half a second. Most likely the same chap I mentioned a couple of weeks back after Morecambe, who was laying into Keogh holding the ball to try and invite pressure when we were 4-0 up.

Add to that a constant stream of criticism, and one has to wonder what enjoyment people like this actually get from spending their spare time watching football.

Agree on the whole. But we were a little slow and nearly caught napping on a few occasions last night.

It's a fine line that helps us play but can also give the opposition a sniff and a foothold in the game they don't deserve. We were a little too close to that line last night IMO although I doubt we'd have been pushing the margins to the same extent against a more threatening promotion rival.

Walton can only play the pass that is in front of him , a couple of times he knew he is supposed to play it short but the movement in front of him was not quite there .

They enjoy criticising and moaning. In fact, they love it. I do wonder how many are like that away from the footy, just moaning and complaining constantly, and criticising everything no matter how big or small a deal.

Oh, another one. I was sat near a lovely old chap who was super enthusiastic and generally seemed a really good guy. He did make me laugh on one occasion though, when Walton caught the ball and didn't immediately play it long for a counter attack. He turned to me and said, "see, I think we miss a trick there, we don't get it forward quickly enough sometimes do we?"

I just sort of nodded and smiled, but what I really wanted to point out was that this was at the 87 minute mark and we were 2-0 up, and there was literally no need to rush whatsoever!

Yes completely.

I was telling the fans to calm down around me who were doing this last night!

Us inviting the high press is exactly what we need to open up sh!thouse teams like Accrington who love nothing more than a low block. A fine example of this is half way through the second half when we completely opened them up with a beautiful passage of play from the back.

Yes, occasionally it makes me want to soil myself but I’d take that all day long over the neck brace I used to have to wear to watch MM style football.

I've posted on this way back, it's the way McK wants us to play - it has its benefits but we will make mistakes. We are a L1 teams with L1 and at best Champ players who are not perfect and will make the odd poor decision.

But the benefits, as we saw last night, in playing out from the back and beating the high press are clear and evident and are serving us well.

As long as create and convert our chances, even if we do make a mistake, we should be more than good enough to overcome those.

Yes, I get the philosophy and overall I agree.

But last night we were a little too slow at times. Probably down to the opposition who weren’t posing much of a threat but were working hard to cut out passing options. But felt a little too similar to Burton away earlier in the season where attempts to play out of our own half really were providing the opposition with their best attacking possibilities.

On a separate but related note, I think automatic promotion teams generally aren’t as wedded to an approach to get them playing but more to make sure they get results and thus play a less open and risky game. The Best Footballing Teamâ„¢, who people say would look good in the division above, often seem to end up in the playoffs.

Yes, we had the odd poor pass/ decision making last night but, that will happen, especially at this level.

We have to take the rough with the smooth. McK isn't going to change it and, I would argue, he doesn't need to.

I'm not so sure I agree with you on the last point, certainly there are times where you need to win when not playing well but I would argue that both Sheff Wed and Plymouth have both have a very clear approach to how they play.

It's interesting isn't it.

Last night, arguably more so than Saturday, we went very direct with that angled ball to Jackson.
