Unfortunately, yes, because we're a bunch of moronic lemmings charging over the cliff of climate change as quickly and stupidly as we possibly can, in the biggest, most energy hungry cars with our children and grandchildren in the back seat screaming for new phones and trainers. Tvvats.

When I think of that I still get nervous of how lucky I was not to have caused an accident- especially so as my youngest was in the car.

I can’t say I’ve seen a recent growth in the number of trucks, as they’re called where you are. They took off many years ago but now seem to be far outnumbered by large SUVs. Loads of those around now.

On this fine March morning, peace and love to everyone on 13:04 - Mar 17 with 1954 views | MattinLondon | Admittedly it is funny when you see a driver of one of them trying to park in a space which is far too small for it. They do seem to be getting more and more popular- no idea why.
On this fine March morning, peace and love to everyone on 13:08 - Mar 17 with 1925 views | Zx1988 | I imagine it's driven in part by the VAT exemptions for 'commercial' vehicles such as this: https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/vans/95748/double-cab-pick-up-truck-tax-benefits-e It would appear that if you are VAT-registered, you can pick one of these up as a company vehicle and benefit from VAT reclaims and preferential BIK rates, even if your business is something that would never need a pick-up in a month of Sundays.

If I had a pound for every time one of my kids distracted me when driving, resulting in a near miss, then I’d have enough to buy one of those jeeps.

One of the pitfalls of living in rural areas I guess. Still no excuse to get one of those monstrous ugly things. [Post edited 17 Mar 2023 16:24]

In my younger, house sharing days at various times, I lived with Aussies. All were really friendly - but they all took themselves very seriously. Not sure if it’s a National trait but none were the stereotypical laid back Aussie type. [Post edited 17 Mar 2023 16:25]

Warrior, Trojan, Centurion, et al. And that they seem to be driven exclusively by men? Which would then suggest that men are attracted to pick-ups. They don't need your "excuses" or any stupid generalisations - they have plenty of good reasons, some of which I listed.

That was supposed to be tongue in cheek! I'm not attacking anyone for their choice of vehicle. I have no problem with pick-ups or SUVs whether they're bought out of necessity or desire. I don't care what other people drive.

I do. Especially when someone gets defensive about it. Anyone would think that the countryside was some god forbidden wasteland, inhospitable as soon as the temperature drops, leaving nothing but barren land. A land incapable of being navigated except by a massive horror of a car.

Sounds like Ryorry bought one because she needed something like that. Surely the issue is with people driving things like that or giant 4x4s when they are just driving around town?

Thanks J2. For the record, I've never driven, let alone bought a pickup myself, but have had quite a few friends & neighbours over the years who did so for the reasons I listed. Many of them live/d along muddy tracks or have long steep unsurfaced drives. I had a SWB Landrover which I bought after breaking two axles, only a few months apart, of my old Volvo on the 500m long rough track leading to my old house. Blanket generalisations by some people (not you) polarise debate in a really unhelpful way. We're all on the same side re the climate crisis. [Post edited 17 Mar 2023 22:21]

This has been true for many many years now, it's not contributed to any alleged sharp recent increase in the number of these vehicles being on the road.
