Totally agree. I seem to remember Lambert saying that there were so many issues within the club that needed addressing, but nothing ever happened in Evans ownership. If the manager isn't given the tools to do the job, you just cant make Lambert totally responsible. Of course now things are entirely different. I doubt even McK would have got the club promoted under Evans ownership.

It depends on what people mean by worst. Both were bad in terms of results - statistically Hurst is worst there, but results barely changed with Lambert. Lambert’s surliness and that episode with Phil left a bad taste though.

The only thing I despised him for was muscling TWTD out of pressers - but he was just symptom of a much bigger issue - an owner with a penchant for hiring managers way past their sell by date. I actually think at least Lambert showed a bit of passion and telling some home truths to the players and Marcus Evans. I you watched the game vs Norwich it was obvious he HATES Norwich. Not the best manager, but certainly did what he could with the club in a mess. Paul Hurst on the other hand...

All opinions and Lambert was worse than both in mine. Keane didn’t relegate us to the third division with one of the worst records in the history of the championship. Keane didn’t leave us with a squad that had to be entirely dumped. Keane didn’t ban TWTD and then stop doing media work himself. Keane got crap results and wasted a load of money and very clearly isn’t cut out to be a manager but Lambert was still a bigger stain on this club. Hurst was way out of his depth and had nobody around him to reign in his kid in a crap sweetshop approach to transfers, and nobody to tell him his lower league management style was unlikely to bear much fruit with our squad. We’ll never know for sure but I think he’d have made a slightly better fist of staying up than Lambert did too. Lambert was crap over a longer period of time too.

Evans seemed to actually go out of his way to find managers who weren’t just past their sell by date, but had been thrown out into recycling, carted off the the refuse centre and were just about to be composted. Cheap though, I suppose.

Keane had MILLIONS more in funding AND had a reasonable squad to start with (we were only just outside the play offs). He was taking us towards League 1 even if he was sacked before he relegated us. Lots of his squad needed a clear out. Town were already headed to League 1 when Lambert came in, with a terrible squad assembled by Hurst. I'm not saying that absolves him of blame but comparing the hand he was dealt with Keane's is chalk and cheese.

Didn't Keane inherit a squad that had just missed out on top 6 and beaten Norwich or am I getting history wrong

Lamberts win rate is worse than Keanes despite the majority of his games being in the division below. Lambert left a little over 2 years ago and only 1 of his signings remains, and he hasn’t played in months and will leave this summer. Lambert may have inherited a poor squad but a decent manager would have gotten something out of them, and he was allowed to sign players on loan in January who would have cost us quite a bit in terms of wages and not one of them improved us in the slightest. He then signed league two quality players upon taking us down. Keane at least left some half decent players behind even if he wildly overspent on all of them and couldn’t get a tune out of them. I agree Keane was crap too but lambert was still worse for us in my opinion especially when you throw in the fact he acted like a petulant child for most of the latter part of his reign. The fact that you don’t seem to think there’s even a debate to be had about which of them is worse is frankly quite odd.

I've literally spelt out why I think Keane was worse so not sure what you're finding odd. Only 1 of Lambert's signings remaining 2 years later is irrelevant to the Keane V Lambert debate. As is "a decent manager would have gotten something out of them", and "he was allowed to sign players on loan in January who would have cost us quite a bit in terms of wages." What have these got to do with Keane v Lambert. You're just throwing out words because you don't have an argument. Keane was given many millions more than Lambert AND inherited a much better squad anyway. What Keane inherited had just finished just outside the play offs... Lambert's was already bottom and in freefall. FACTS!

So me referencing Lamberts transfer market dealings is irrelevant and throwing out words but Keanes transfer market dealings is the crux of your argument? Bizarre You’ve also ignored some of my other points and just keep saying Keane spent more money. I’ll leave you to it because anybody who thinks their own opinion is a fact is not worth having a debate with. Particularly when there is clearly no right or wrong answer to the question and opinions will naturally vary

It was better that way. Lambert was an overpaid walking ego. A windbag with no idea whatsoever what he was doing. For those who said he didn’t have the resources, he certainly had enough players. Loads of them. Shame so many weren’t any good. What kind of pillock gives Captain clueless a five year contract? We were relegated without a whimper. Rubbish. No fight, no anything. Ok, Hurst played his part but Lambert’s impact was zero. Whether he was worse than Hurst is a but like discussing which leg to lose. Both were catastrophic. The final say on gasbag videoman Lambert rests with Darren Bent. At Aston Villa where he did have resources and plenty of them he was clueless. Both Hurst and Lambert are a stain. Keane, Jewell and Cook aren’t far behind. But we can now look to the future and forget these wasters, thank goodness.

Now that we’re up I just wanted to say on 16:53 - May 8 by Superblue95 | I’d include motivation skills as being a big part of being a decent manager. If the players are showing no fight or commitment then the manager is not doing a good job of motivating them. |
The players are on the pitch not manager. They have their responsibilities too. After all they used to blind people with their cliches about commitment and fight. Antonio Conte for the example must be the bad manager too for what happened at Tottenham, eh?

No, you referenced Lambert's transfers in terms of how many are left now. What on earth has that got to do with how bad he was compared to Keane?! Lambert had way less money to start with, so obviously had less good players to pick from. And his first transfer window was in Jan when we were well adrift at the bottom, so who is going to want to come here in that scenario? I compare them by how much they had to spend in the Champ. And what they had in terms of players to start with. These are crucial to how well a manager is going to do. And these are facts, there's no opinion about it.
