That George Hirst is the number one priority for signings. If its a no from Leicester early on we move on quickly rather than drag it out like last season.

That Haaland kid seems ok. He’s younger than Hirst so should be cheaper.

....he's done really well for us.

But I don't think he should be our "ceiling" when it comes to a centre forward.

I wouldn't be too concerned if we do end up with him, but he should by no means be our main target.

Don't agree with you there Bloots. Hirst is only going to get better. He has all the right attributes. Fantastic strength and desire. Knows where he back of the net is.

I think we might be slightly more professional now than chasing a target all summer and then not having a plan B. We're also offering more than £3 and a Chomp these days.

Yep, we certainly didn't do that last summer and panic sign Gassan Ahadme on deadline day......hopefully this new regime will ensure that doesn't happen again!

Who do you think we should be aiming for as a main target and at what kind of price range?

Worth bearing in mind that Leicester thought he was good enough to tie down with a fairly large contract and I believe I read that Blackburn's purchase clause was many millions (possibly 5m?). Leicester getting relegation may change the context somewhat of course.

Personally, I don't think Leicester knew what to do him with him and just panicked a bit on back of Pompey loan last year so tried to tie him up get a fee - and the Blackburn agreed fee was set (and to be taken) if he were to tear it up in Champ so you'd imagine after another success in L1 and failure in Champ he should be available for a fair bit less than that.

One name that interests me, who would be a massive stretch target would be Keinan Davis - but would be a club record transfer. Was superb for Forest in Champ run in when they went up and had an ok season at Watford - but he'd be in that £7-8m range

What I dare say Blooters means is, Hirst is good but don’t be surprised if we blow the doors off when it comes to signings this summer regardless of if we get him or not. I bet we break our record at least once.

I wouldn't be so sure he's our number 1 target.

Took him time to settle, and actually struggled all the way up to his Bolton goal - he was struggling in that game until his goal as well.

He has also already had two difficult spells in the Championship as well.

Don't get me wrong, he showed real qualities once he found his feet, and would have no issue with him being a target, but don't think all our eggs will go in one basket.

....playing the "Ladapo" role next season, (ie the alternative) and someone else coming in as the main man.

This would potentially mean Ladapo moving on.

We got him on a free, we can flog him on for a profit.

"Player trading" innit, Ashton loves it.

I actually think the time to settle kind of works in his favour? Think you can tell two stories about George Hirst's senior career so far.

Story One is that he's a striker who simply didn't cut it in the Championship, for whom League One is his true level.

Story Two is that he's a striker with all the right attributes who takes a bit of time to settle, needs to adapt to patterns of play, needs a run of games and a bit of trust, something he didn't get either at Rotherham or Blackburn, but will get at Ipswich.

Scored some stunning goals, but not hatfuls of goals.. Recent form is pretty good, but overall, I think he's 6 goals in 21 games.. So, as much as I'd like him here. Don't think we need to bend over backwards to sign him.
No doubt there'll be 3 or 4 targets in mind. Possibly complete upgrades on Hirst.

Think this is where we see how much of Bristol City fans opinions on Ashton were correct when it comes to transfers.

They claim he just spent spent spent with no thought on the future and left them expensive signings.

a niche perspective

In fairness, we weren't last summer and that nearly cost us this year having been left with just Ladapo!

Watching Millwall v Blackburn. We are better than both those teams already. We press higher and faster, we have better movement, passing accuracy at least as good, but I reckon we make more incisive passes, and we close down when out of possession quicker. We are gonna be good for top 6.

Maybe the reason we move the ball better, press better etc is because we are playing worse teams. We can have a great crack at the championship next season for sure, but I dont agree with the sentiment we are better than them right now, which will probably show by the players we sign in the transfer window to improve the team.

Just don't see who the buyer for Ladapo would be. League One clubs don't pay many substantial fees and the ones they do pay tend to be with one eye on potential re-sale value.

Marcus Harness was the oldest League One player to move for a fee last season.

Maybe a Derby with a bit of cash to spend might drop £300-400k - working under Warne again

There’d be loads of interest. Fee in the area of 400k probs.

Definitely need a striker. Whether it's him or not, i'm not sure.

Obviously he would know how we play etc so would be a good signing.

Agreed. Although if Hirst isn’t promised-ish the main man role he may not want to come, got a juicy contract at Leicester after all.
Think as you alluded to there will be some very big changes this summer that will surprise and probably disappoint a lot of people.

There's a lot of clubs who'd want him. How many of them can pay £400k for a player with no resale value?

Hard to think of any similar transfers last season.

Do we really think Ladapo can't play his role still in the Championship?

Definitely need a "Main" man, but as a resefve, Ladapo woul dbe OK. However, does he want that, I don't know.
