Burns linked with Wrexham on 14:33 - May 11 by GavTWTD | That's not how websites work though, is it? They've now profited directly through people visiting that site and added money to their coffers, and improved their SEO pushing them higher up google rankings. This will just spur them on to produce more of the same. |
In fairness they have just been a news aggregator for a genuine story from Give Me Sport from a journo who isn't a complete idiot normally - Dean Jones from Ranks FC podcast. They haven't made it up themselves which is the worst sort of story like this which sees website move up tables etc

Paul Mullin dropped down two leagues to sign for them when he was 26, and I doubt he was out of pocket. I bet Wrexham do sign at least one or two of Burns's calibre, on the same kind of wages Town pay. And maybe they ARE prepared to pay over the going rate to buy players to emphasise their Welshness. They'll have to play by FFP this year. I'm sure they can do some interesting accounting for some of it but they can't go completely mad, even if it is weaker in League One and Two. I'm not sure how spending 3mil+ (at the very least) on Burns would be a good investment given the league their in. They could probably get a whole team for that sort of money. And that's without taking into account the wages.

Personally I doubt he's valued at three million, - not many players who at 26 have played almost all their football in League 1 or below go for that much. (Where would Town actually find a buyer who would pay that much?) I think 1 million - 1.2 million is more like it. Town could easily find a decent replacement with that in their pocket, and younger. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The level of disrespect Burns gets from some people is nuts. 21/22 - 12 goals, 7 assists 22/23 - 8 goals, 11 assists Absolutely no reason he cannot step up a level. He has all the attributes too.

Putting on my serious hat for a minute, Wes is the closest he's ever been to the Wales setup. Dropping to L2 would end his international career, what with him being 28 already. The opportunity to prove himself in the Championship is one he's waited a very long time for. It wouldn't surprise me if he dreams of one step higher, which only Championship football this season could bring. If Wes wanted to embrace his Welshness to the fullest then there are two options in our new division, which wouldn't force him to simultaneously sacrifice those career opportunities. I'll take a punt that he'd enjoy the TV and Hollywood extras, but this would presumably be offset by the pitiful Saturday afternoons and Tuesday evenings - in comparison to what he's experienced here. So while we'd accept a silly offer and reinvest, I can't imagine Wes would be willing to give up all the above. I suppose every man has his price, even our Keno, but I doubt Wrexham would be willing to meet it.

He'll be a handy (more so, probably) option in the (and this is genuinely a compliment) Paul Anderson mould but think of it another way. His back up on that side is Jackson, which is quite a step down from Burns himself. To bolster that side, why would we limit ourselves to someone in between those quality levels when we could get someone who we view as an upgrade for that side in entirety? Definitely a position that's ripe for a Davis/Clarke/Broadhead type of profile or a quality Prem loan.

There's the extra sticking point re any deal though, right - we aren't presumably looking for a buyer. Wrexham would need to offer a highly inflated sum on top of highly inflated wages.

Wales took League 2 players to the World Cup, and I really doubt the Wrexham experience will be 'pitiful' next season, home or away. They'll be breezing through that league, with its three automatic promotion places, in no time at all. As everyone rightly points out, Wrexham will have to pay a lot, but they may think it's worth it if he improves their brand and brings something new to the soap opera. It's the fact that he speaks Welsh that makes it seem to me that a serious offer is not as laughable a suggestion as some people are making out.

....that we are going to sell players. The nature of player trading (a phrase used by Ashton a number of times) is that the players we sell will inevitably be "fans favourites". We will get top price for those that we do sell and we just have to trust that the replacements will be better. We will sell players....it's what Ashton does.

Burns is nailed on playing for us in the Championship this season. Worst case scenario for him is he's backup for a new player but given how we rotate in the second half he'll get loads of appearances. It's a ridiculous story.

L2 may prove a cakewalk but he wouldn't play in front of an attendance above 11000. There are only so many memories you can make romping past L2 sides, particularly when you've just achieved it against far bigger clubs in a better division. League One is unlikely to be straightforward for them. Then you have a player who, best case scenario, doesn't touch Championship soil before he's 30. Happy to be corrected on the Welsh setup and their dearth of talent right now, but dropping to the bottom of the pyramid is certainly a poor career move of he hopes to establish himself at that level. So 'laughable' may be too strong in respect to this move gaining traction, but it would require both Wes and us to be laughing ourselves to the bank. The curveball would be if the club makes it clear to him his future opportunities will be limited here, but that feels most unlikely.

That is how news works. We report what's happening, although worth mentioning with regard to the two players that we had previously reported that they'd been on trial and their backgrounds. Clickbait, such as the Burns-Wrexham story, isn't quite the same thing.
