For afficienados of fantasy films. (not THAT sort of fantasy ) on 09:47 - May 13 with 2118 views | wkj | Dwarves are usually portrayed as rugged mountain dwellers with a love of earth resources. Given the mountainous nature of Scotland and the rugged reputation paired with the fact that "Civilized" North America is so young, it is my assumption that Scotland fits the bill better than anywhere else. Austria fits that bill better, if that were it they should be portrayed as stereotypical Austrians.

True, but Austria is closer to the Swiss, so they don't like to get involved by proxy

Ex wife was 4’11”. One inch taller than the criteria for being a dwarf. Whenever she used to say to me “I’m not happy” I used to ask her “which one are you then?” She didn’t find it as amusing as I did. Anyway, I now call her divorced Barbie. She comes with all of Ken’s accessories… Edit. I realise that last joke only works if people know my name is Ken. Ex wife really is 4’11”. Good things come in small packages. I was a good thing.. I think it was only in the LOTR films that it happened, because yes Peter Jackson wanted the dwarves, well Gimli at least, to sound like he'd come from this mountainous region from the UK because thats ultimately the language of Tolkien as opposed to Austria or Switzerland, and so he went ah Aberdeen granite city, dwarves chiselled stuff out of hard stone, they must sound scottish then and once it was set it had to be carried through the Hobbit too, though does Thorin sound Scottish ? but its not been a trope of fantasy films at all. Willow would be another good example of non scottish dwarves in a fantasy film

Excellent stuff, although I would suggest that Tolkien's language, with its roots in Middle English, Germanic and Scandinavian tongues (not THAT sort of cunning linguistics) that cave dwelling, hammer and tongs wielding, iron age stunted by a lack of light Vikings is the type of apparent Scottish vibe in 'Lord In The Rings'. It's the Shetlander, Orcadian and Picts side of Scotland rather than the Briton and Gael side.

Seriously, where to begin ? Well, 'Time Bandits' - where the dwarves were the canny ones who came in to sort out the mess that the comedians made. Ah, I can see the Scottish connection after all...
