Realistically, we need three 9s.
2 incomings and Ladapo.
If we want to press teams the way we do.It will take it's toll physically, both in game, and across the season..
With only 2 strikers. If one gets a knock or injury, then our whole pressing game will be degraded.
Don't get why people are happily binning off Freddy. 20plus goals, at strike rate per minute thats on par with Chaplin.Someone who never moans about minutes and is up to speed with our tactics. Yes, we can upgrade, but that doesn't make Freddy surplus, imo. Especially when he's the type of player, that embraces competition and is continually improving..

Also, not every opposition team will have their stall set out the same way. Some more predictably, so Simms, say, with his box of tricks is likely to upset the apple cart. Some more resolutely, so Hirst, say, can link up with Broadhead and Burns to progressively unseat them. And then you have supersub Ladapo (or even Jackson) ready for the final twenty to pummel a tired defence. It will be interesting to see how McKenna develops his tactical substitution strategy during 2023/24 season.

That's often a big part of the thinking when signing for a club, where do you fit in and will you play. In our system where we play with 1 central striker its 100% going to be a consideration. If we get Simms across the line it'll certainly come into Hirst's thinking. It would be naive to think it wouldn't.

It's a consideration of course, because some players will take the better wage, others will want trophies and others might want to be the main man, but I often think this gets overstated in certain situations as a bigger concern than it is, when moving to a club that's at 'your level'.

Out of the tens of thousands of kids in academies etc, a tiny percentage 'make it'. So an Ellis Sims or George Hirst has likely been better than everybody they know at U7's, U10's, U14's and then U16's and U18's and so on. They have that mentality that they are better than everybody their age so they are hardly going to be concerned about each other. They'll back themselves again to be better than the other guy.

We wouldn't want to sign a player who didn't want anyone competing for their spot. Every professional player alludes to how other good players push them to be the best. They already have the mentality to outwork and outperform everyone else, they've done it their whole lives.

I'd be certain Simms would consider he can get in the side ahead of Hirst and that Hirst would think exactly the same of Simms, if they were both signed.

Hirst came in on loan and immediately ousted a very good Ladapo who was scoring regular. Simms backed himself to score in the Premier League and keep some pretty well established strikers out. It's what professional players do and it's why they have got to where they are.

Perhaps at 28-30 they feel like they've hit a ceiling if they've been at one level a while and never made it at the one above, but at 22, 23, 24 I am sure they just keep expecting to get better and better like they always have done and have no idea what their limit is. Look at how Kane took off from being just an okay Championship / League One striker to 30 goal a season striker in the Premier League. We are talking just a couple of seasons.

Im pretty sure we are going to spend over £5m+ in this window.
2 strikers and a CM will cost good money. We are not even back at training yet and clubs dont want to pay wages in the summer.

Who do you think might be for the chop?

There's lots of talk of the likes of Pigott / Harper moving on which are surely a given, but I've been saying a while I wouldn't rule out some bigger departures than that. Harness, Ladapo, Evans surely can't be safe.

Still surprised we offered Aluko terms though.

More Championship teams will give us space that we were afforded in the third division and allow him to work his magic.

You could well be right. I'm sure McKenna has ambitions to manage Man Utd one day. You don't have the luxury of sentimentality when you are hugely ambitious.

I think one issue that management will be keen not to destroy, is team harmony and spirit. It's going to be tricky!

Tbh I've always thought it would be great quite something to have a new signing announced in a new kit.

You seem angry again today. So I'll leave you to it.

Not angry at all, just trying to understand your reasoning.

I hope you're right. I suppose the other consideration is within the confines of FFP, whether we deem 2 'big ticket' additions in the same area as the right place to invest. It's possible of course, but might we see 1 of them coming in, Ladapo pushing them / rotating in and perhaps a loanee to bring further competition.

I do think we'll spend money over the next couple of months, but as ever the pot is finite and I wonder if we'll look to spread those more chunky investments across the pitch. I think we're heavy on numbers in midfield but perhaps light on Championship quality. A big addition up top and a big one to partner Morsy might be better.

Will certainly be interesting, I'll be surprised if we land both Simms and Hirst for various reasons but would be delighted if we do.

Depends on the fee.

Speaking to a couple of people on Everton side they think nowhere near lower Prem level, Dyche didn’t rate him but they haven’t heard any whispers about Town from that end so presume things aren’t as further along as some may think.

Yes that's the point, is playing 50% of our minutes going to float their boat? I can't imagine Simms is looking to drop down from the Premier League to play 50% of the season.

50 % better than 0% and you have to play well to keep the shirt

I still haven't ruled out Hirst on a season loan, with option to buy. Similar to what Blackburn did. I think that could really suit us. And give us a year to work on him, and guage how good he really is at Champ' level.

Think that deal will be difficult to do, and if anything won’t be done until late.

Leicester really need to get their house in order this summer, and have bigger deals to be doing for huge earners before they look at Hirst situation.

When they do get to that situation, they may want to retain him as 2nd/3rd choice, and may be unwilling to sell to a Championship rival.

Player might be on hols
They might want to link new signings with new kit release
Etc etc. Town TV announcement.

Plus the club may well want all new signings to sign in the next financial year, i.e. July 1st, for a number of reasons.

I have no doubt whatsoever that deals have been agreed, even possibly signed and post-dated to July 1st. Can't announce post-dated deals until that date arrives.
