Cricket: Day 4 Thread on 14:43 - Jun 19 with 1227 views | Steve_M | 196/6, 203 ahead. I reckon getting 280 ahead will be good work from here. Not an ideal number but that's about the minimum target I would want at this point. Tend to agree with those wanting 320 but can't see we'll get there.

I'm all for this positivity but feel we are going to have to work much harder for wickets when they chase. We need to be 300 ahead at least here.

People generally overestimate the runs required to defend against the 4th innings. I suspect 275 - 280 would be about 50:50. Anything 300+ would put England favourites. It's completely in the balance. Captivating cricket from day one. Some patchy weather may also play into the English hands tomorrow if it's a little stop start. We'll do well to get 250 ahead at the moment. Just need these two to hang around a bit.

Losing Stokes is a choker. Nighthawk to the rescue with a quick 40.

We had good partnerships in Root & Brooks, then Bairstow & Stokes. But neither delivered what they really needed to. Think we could have done with an anchorman. Bairstow would have been perfect to hold up one end, hit the bad balls, and rotate strike. Let Stokes do the big hitting and then accelerate as the tail arrived. [Post edited 19 Jun 2023 15:06]

Yes, been a bit too careless with the wickets this innings. Pope aside all of the rest were largely avoidable but I think the Root one will be the one we'll look back on if England lose the Test. Equally Australia reviewing that ball against Robinson with their last review is bizarre judgement. They still have a way to go before they bat again.

We need some swing and vintage Jimmy and Broad if not I can't see us defending 250,if we get that much! But Mo,Robinson and Broad could easily and another 80-100 runs if they play well, then its a totally different scenario

Disagree. My views from a previous thread... It was an agressive decision, but it gave us two shots at the Australian top order. It might not have worked that evening but it did pay off the next day when we had Australia 2-29, then 3-67 with Labuschagne and Smith both gone. The aim of the declaration was to break into the top order, and it worked. The team created enough chances, despite the flat wicket, to create a 50 - 100 run lead heading into the second innings. They would say it was the 4 big missed opportunities in the field (Broad no ball, Green stumping, and 2x Carey drops) that cost them that lead, not the timing of the declaration.

if anything its the wicket keeping mistakes that have cost us

Cricket: Day 4 Thread on 15:34 - Jun 19 with 1066 views | gainsboroughblue | As much as people will inevitably point to the declaration, there have been plenty of opportunities to control what could and should have been a stronger lead. ie Green should've gone for 0, Usman before he got his ton. That's a hundred runs already. This second innings has also been way more chaotic than it needed to be. Root is absolutely world class and can keep scoreboard ticking without the recklessness. And Broad is gone as I type. Edit. Reviewed not out [Post edited 19 Jun 2023 15:35]

Khawaja had the ton when he was reprieved but still 35 runs or so there. Despite all the errors, England keep scoring runs. Robinson and Broad starting to irritate the Aussies a bit, 23 so far. [Post edited 19 Jun 2023 15:51]

That's a shame but a good set up for the wicket. 263 ahead with Broad and Jimmy in. I've seen them add 50-odd against SA at Lord's. Even half of that now would help a lot.
