...including Taylor signing and looking at those not involved in pre season yesterday...

GK (3) - Walton, Hladky, Hayes
RB (2) - Clarke, Donacien
LB (2) - Davis, Leigh
CB (3) - Woolfenden, Burgess, Edmundson Baggott*
CM (6) - Morsy, Evans, Ball, Luongo, Camara, Taylor, Humphreys*
W/AM (7) - Burns, Chaplin, Harness, Jackson, Aluko, Edwards, Broadhead
ST (2) - Ladapo, Ahadme
Total (25+2)

Out on Loan (1) - Ndaba

Likely leaving - Permanent or loan (4) - El Miz, Pigott, Harper, Yengi

So with the 4 seemingly on their way out - we are at our 25 man squad limit

I'd be surprised if he doesn't go. He's not good enough to play in a top champ or lower premier team and doesn't have upside in potential. He was bought in for a specific role, which was to get us out of L1. Our best spell came when he wasn't first choice and given our links with Simms and Hirst I suspect he will be traded as soon as we land them. Off to Charlton.

Makes sense to me, seems a good guy and scored 20 goals last season - but I don't see he has the athletic profile we need for the striker role in this style (compared to Hirst as an e.g.) and he isn't going to be coming on for 20-30 mins when already 2-0 up against Morecambe or Forest Green. We will need to be subbing off first choice for someone of similar style and quality.

Done a very good job last season, and now will need to go somewhere else and sign a longer deal off the back of it.

Stupid question I’m sure, but can we not just not put contracted players in the first team squad? Say for eg Piggott can’t find a move that suits him and decides to see his contract out, not that im saying he will but just for instance, do we then *have* to include him in the 25? Or would he effectively be in purdah or the reserves or U23s or whatever they are now?

He just wouldn't be eligible for league games if not in the named squad - so could still play cup games but that would be it

He's not going to be a regular player for a team that probably has ambitions for the top 6. We need at least 2 strikers, and suspect we might get 3 including a loanee.

Think you are going to be hugely surprised by the movement in both directions this summer.

Well I would be surprised if there was mass changes, I don't think KMc will want to upset the balance and momentum this group has built - but also well aware we will need to add quality and a bit of depth in certain areas. ST, W/AM & LCB I think is all we need.

Outgoings I think we will be far more active. Could see any of; Piggot, Ahadme, Harper, El Mizouni, Jackson, Humphreys, Camara, Harness & Edwards move on in a variety of permanent and loan deals.

Interesting discussions obviously but I reckon everyone on here could save a lot of time and thought trying to work it all out, and just have 100% confidence that by the start of the season it will all be sorted and trust that the management will have got it all correct.

Prior to this era it would definitely be worth debating as you'd not trust those in charge to get it right.

At a guess, I reckon the following will go (either loan or permanent);
Burgess or Edmundson
Camara
Humphreys
Jackson
Harness
Edwards
Ahadme
Ladapo
Hladky

Cant see them letting Camara go, we havent seen anything of him yet. The club have also spent a small fortune on getting him fit, they will want something back from that. By all accounts he has been working really hard over summer getting into shape with up to 2 fitness coaches putting him through his paces. He will be part of the squad. lm wondering if KmK has plans to push him further forward into one of the number 10 slots,we need another one there and l think he could be pretty devastating in those areas with his pace.

A loan deal with recall option in January may be more beneficial though.

Could go and play week in week out in L1 until Christmas and reassess where he is and where we are in January. I don't think he'll have the luxury of week in week out football here to begin with.

Ultimately we an option on his deal which means he really has 2 years left on his contract.

I agree I think he will be a more advanced no.10 player rather than a natural CM for us though.

I don't think opining and speculating means there's no trust that we'll get it right.

I'm confident we will, I've got every faith in McKenna and co, but its still interesting (I use the term loosely) to consider what the outcome might be for a few of these players and what our squad might look like for the season.

I think a fair few will move on. I wonder if we tried to use any in the Taylor deal, I would've thought we might've offered them Harper as part of the deal, but perhaps they weren't interested.

I can see it being something like this.

GK 3 - Walton, Hladky / Other, Hayes / Other
RB 2 - Clarke, Donacien
LB 2 - Davis, Leigh
CB 4 - Woolfenden, Burgess, Edmundson, NEW LCB
CM 5 - Morsy, Luongo, Taylor, Ball, Evans
W/AM 7 - Burns, Chaplin, Jackson, Aluko, Edwards, Broadhead, NEW RM/CM
ST 2 - NEW CF, NEW CF

Ndaba is out on loan. It would make sense to send Humphries on a season long loan to League One as he's a top prospect that can do with a season behind him that he won't get at Portman Road.

Camara I can see having a 6 month loan to get him up to speed. Big ask to get him to force his way in now, so I could see him doing that with a view to being brought back in around January with Evans maybe moving on then.

A hybrid RM/CM or RM/AM could come in. Someone like Jason Knight who'd add cover in the middle but can also play where Burns does or someone like John-Jules, albeit a better version.

I think Ladapo would stay until we had two forwards in and then we'd have backup options such as Chaplin, Broadhead etc if we had an injury crisis. Makes me wonder whether we might also target the permanent signing of a good U21 striker with a view to them being a backup in the worst case instead of keeping a Ladapo that may end up not featuring on the bench.

Evans could go with Camara being the one to stay to offer something more attacking, but can see that being the sort of business with Harness one we might look to sell as well.

El Mizouni seems a cert to go for a fee with Taylor in and Piggott and Harper I guess we get anything we can. Yengi could be loaned out but making no impression at Northampton as we rise another level you'd imagine he could well just leave.

There will be a number of players around this level and in Europe that have the same or a similar skill set to TJJ, but without the potential injury concerns.

I really rate him.

However, his loan career to date has been okay in the Championship and good in League One. I don't think it's too unrealistic to think we want someone in the mould, without the injury issues that have been present over a number of seasons and potentially who is doing the business at this level now or the equivalent.

If we can attract TJJ at League One level, we can attract someone ahead of him in their development at Championship level.

Depends of he can keep injury free isn't it? Didn't know he'd had his third injury whilst eith town which isn't great at such a young age.

Interesting how many of the players on people's lists to get rid of are players that have been brought in for fees and decent wages in the last two years.

Perhaps some restraint and trust in the existing squad is what's needed this summer. Mckenna's signalled that's his intention by retaining aluko.

Striker's the only real need for me now, at least until jan.

Interesting points, thanks for this. I think we need a big increase in quality to finish top half.

Strikers. Looks like we are trying to strengthen, we are looking to bring in a quality striker early in the window. Leicester's relegation not sure what that means for Hirst.

Midfield players. We are overloaded. The heart of this is what KMcK thinks of players, this is why, what on the face of it seem to be strange decisions (retaining Jackson and Aluko) are not that surprising. I think this is where KMcK's inexperience shows. I am more than happy with KMcK of course, needless to say.

Aluko does a great bit of skill in the Burnley replay, if he does that, all it does is an opponent will give him a whack to stop it happening again, this leads to the thought of how can we protect our twinkle toes players like Aluko and Camara, who 'can't take a tackle'. Certainly they can't 'give it back'. Possibly they can only be used as bit part players. Next season we will need harder players to get us the right to play our possession football, wear teams down with passing football.

Central Defenders, we really do need to splash the cash. At championship level we need one top class and one younger Rolls Royce who have the nous to know how not to give free kicks away, ball over the top to ex Burnley thug vs Woolf you know who will win the physicals and con the ref. We will be losing game after game by those unlucky tight margins until this central defence is sorted out. I hope we can find defenders good enough who will join us.

He has significant experience really, given his early start, and as far as I can see he's been making excellent decisions about players and squad balance since he's been here.
