Harper contract terminated on 15:54 - Jun 28 by Cheltenham_Blue | Touch of the Mandela effect there I think. I don't recall anyone mentioning Harper in the same breath as Doz. Two very different players. |
It very definitely happened. More about the timing of the respective deals being close to each other and both being midfielders. Some people did get very excited that Summer.

Harper contract terminated on 12:50 - Jun 28 by HighgateBlue | Anyone ripping up any division is extremely rare in general. But has it EVER happened when someone has dropped down to a lower division and been tipped to 'rip up' that division...? |
I guess, given what O'S fans are saying about El Miz and his 40+ games there, that he might be said to have done that - though I appreciate that some would argue that he has never been a L1 player in the first place.

Harper contract terminated on 16:02 - Jun 28 by itfcjoe | It was definitely happening, because people were saying that Harper was clearly better than Dozzell and I was trying to make the point that if that was the case QPR could have bought him for less than half the price and on much lower wages but elected not to It was also around this point that a couple of posters claimed the only reason we got £1m for Andre, was because that was his release clause and he actually wasn't worth that - and still couldn't grasp that a release clause being triggered means you are likely selling them for less than they are worth (and certainly not more than they were worth) |
Same people said Jackson and Harrison were better than Waghorn and Garner.

Harper contract terminated on 19:06 - Jun 28 with 1547 views | Mach_foreignBlue | People said Harper was gonna be better than Dozzell. Oh, because Dozzell will have proven how wrong decision was to let him go, eh? What a season he has had hasn't he? People also said that in our rejects Colchester had been getting the 'fantastic professionals' who would fire them into promotion. That went well ! No-one could have envisaged how poor Harper would turn out to be. Seemed to be a real good signing at the time.

Was still being used as a yardstick here too I've seen a few tweets on it. You not remembering it is fair enough, but as much as I hate to side with Steve M on anything, it was definitely a thing.

Harper contract terminated on 12:21 - Jun 28 by homer_123 | well, if he has a move lined up with, say, a 3 yr deal, them agreeing a reduced pay off is def worth it from his perspective and ours. |
The other cist often forgotten about is the transfer fee amortisation. £500k over a 3-year term, means you will have to impair (wrote-off) the final year’s cost £166k. Add that to any pay-off (as you’ve all suggested) and it’s something like a £200k cost overall. Not huge on its own though.

I remember being told the fee was closer to £250k when we signed him, but at the time the club were happy to let people think they were spending more than they were. Prob had a promotion top up to shell out for - but it's been a bad transfer in both real money costs and book money costs even if the fee was lower than reported

You sound very embittered. Probably best to let whatever it is go.

I’m curious - why would the club want people to think players were costing more than they actually were?

At this point it was new owners, so happy to let fanbase think spending more as adds to the excitement of things - even under previous regime it wasn't until mick spilled beans re fees for Huws and Waghorn being lower that fans realised they weren't at the level club were letting on initially

Seems a bit unfair on the player. I don't think anyone will ever really know what level Huws was at, sad to say.
