And get literally f-all for it.
Why is this?

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

How else do we pay for income top ups? This country is overloaded with £15 per hour and below jobs and vacancies. And with a 2 bed flat costing very close to £1k per month rental……£15 per hour is no longer sustainable, let alone less than £15 an hour.

What if none of those things happen?

A close relative of mine has just been diagnosed with a health problem they have had since birth. They are very probably going to need a major operation to sort that out. With after care, this is going to cost hundreds of thousands of pounds.

In the USA, this, would only be covered by the most high grade of insurance policies. . The NHS is going to treat them for no upfront cost at all.

Just because you haven't needed something your taxes go towards as yet, doesn't mean that you won't, or your one loved ones, won't in the future. And even if they don't, that that safety net is there for others in society, That should warm the cockles of your heart....unless you're a fu*kwit

Atm I'm in Croydon.

Soon I'll drive to Felixstowe. On the roads.
If it were dark then my trip would be illuminated. By streetlights.
If I crash then there will be people to come to my aid. Police. Fire service.
If I am injured I'll be taken to hospital. In an ambulance.
I can write this because I learned to write. In a school.
If we are attacked by Russia then there will be soldiers to wave the white flags on my behalf and RAF planes to fly our politicians to safety.

Etc etc

Currently taxes fund just a few of small areas like:

Health
Welfare
State pensions
Education
Servicing the national debt (almost as much as education, which will surprise many)
Propping up business/industry
Defense
Transport
Public order/safety
Govt admin
Housing & utilities
Environmental protection
Culture
Outstanding payments to EU (we’re paying a good chunk of what our membership fee used to be, for zero benefit)
Overseas aid

What have the Romans ever done for us, etc.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

That ignores republicans in the US who claim that because it is free peiple will misuse it. You will get people deliberately getting ill, breaking their legs and injuring themselves because treatment is free. Though they don't ever explain why US military personnel get free healthcare (because it is a more efficient system, perhaps).

However, when you grasp that tax is NOT charge on your wages but ultimaytely a charge on your employers profits then you will see why it is always the reprentatives of employers who sueak about tax rates.

The real question is one of the buying power of your take home pay. That is why supposedly higher taxed Scandinavian countries enjoy a far high standard of living. Because the tax paid falls on the businesses, they contribute to a far better social care system. Better schools, health and community. Their streets are cleaner, and public transports is cheaper and more efficient.

But claim the dimwitted righties, with all that extra cost falling on them, they must be less competitive. Far from it. Most on here can name plenty of Scandinavian countries that are globally competitive. And will not see the deprivation seen in many parts of the UK.

Whereas in the US where the overall tax take is lower so the social benefits are far lower. Leading to ill health and social deprivation.

This stupidity spread across to the UK in the 1980s. Instead of cooperating we were to be competitive. Instead of building houses and talking about homes, we are now talking about people living on ladders. Not building communities, but competing against each other for less and less housing.

Of course this line (lie) was promoted as it meant a greater share for a smaller number. The lie being the threat came for from an ever changing bogey man, not those exploiting you. It only needed a couple of catalysts, that would have been taken in our stride previously, but were enough to throw a fragile economy totally off the rails.

Unfortunately, this current horror has yet more to come. The Tories are now desperately scrabbling round for another scapegoat. Anything but admit their bigoted flawed economic model was always doomed to fail.

To paraphrase the British Legion's words " these bar stards have been taking your tomorrows for their todays" and fark anyone under the age of 35.

You’ve misunderstood. I am not against paying tax nor am I against having a welfare state and an NHS. This is a common misconception when people talk about this topic.
What I want to know is, why do you me and everyone else pay more and more and more in taxes and get less and less and less for them?
Here’s another eg. I had an ingrowing toenail, I know gross right. I rang my Doctor about it as I had one decades ago and they treated it. Now I would have to pay someone at the surgery to do it as my Doctor surgery don’t offer that treatment anymore. Why?
There aren’t any NHS dentists where I live. Why?
There is a whopper of a pothole on the road out side our primary school that a couple of kids have come off their bikes in. It’s been there since December. Why?
My elderly friends have to ring their Doctor at 8am on the dot to get an appointment that day. Why?
They demolished our local leisure centre and replaced it with one that is literally a third the size of the old one. Why?
Why does this happen? How can our taxes go up and up, and we get f-all for them?

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Because the priority for public money is always on useless things that will never be used - HS2, nuclear weapons etc - and dismantling what little infrastructure remains

PS we are a low tax country. Those at the lower end pay no or very little tax nor do those at the top end - through tax avoidance.

I’m not sure why but the word tax instantly makes me think income tax. The levels seem appropriate as they stand, and I’m not sure many people can afford any rises when times are so tough.

Whilst I think the highest income tax rate needs to rise, the tiny number of people in that bracket make it insignificant to the overall tax take. The richest people also don’t draw a salary so we need higher CGT, higher inheritance tax, higher corporation tax, and those who set themselves up as a company. Why is somebody working in the NHS paying twice the income tax % as Gary Neville was earning millions in his playing days for example.

I think this is key. The tax burden is getting higher for the lower and middle class (especially if you take into account things like student loan repayments) but the taxes on the really wealthy people who aren't going through PAYE are low.

The top rate in the 50's and 60's was 90%. When Thatcher came to power the top tax rate was 83% and the basic rate 33%. There were things you could set against tax such as mortgage interest i seem to recall.

I would;
Reinstate the grammar school system and reintroduce the direct grant system
Build nuclear power stations
Reintroduce tax breaks for families and the family allowance
Renationalise the railways water and electric provision as the Govt should run these utilities
Reintroduce discounted mortgages for key workers
Figure out how to free up the many properties with 2+ empty bedrooms by some sort of carrot and or stick approach to owners
Stop so many building houses but direct those energies toward reinstatement and refurbishment of large derelict properties
Reduce income tax
Increase VAT (certain categories to be exempt)
Increase tax on new cars and the tax on older vehicles

For starters.

I think the issue is that we're lumping all taxation into one bracket.

Who, what, and how it's taken are the key parts for me. We need higher taxes for the wealthy and lower taxes for the lower and middle classes.

Demand for services is increasing faster than the ability to pay for them, I reckon. So the available service sget spread thinner.

Do people pay that on dividends? I'm not talking about anyone on PAYE.

I'm talking about people like our Prime Minister who earn millions upon millions and pay very little back. I linked an article above where they were arguing for:
... the government to look at any policy that taxes wealth as a priority, ranging from the equalisation of capital gains with income tax, a review of property tax, to the introduction of a net wealth tax.

If you're at 45%, you're well off or maybe even rich, but you're unlikely to be the sort of person hiding your money off shore. It's those types of people to look at.

I'll give you an example.

During the austerity years conservative Councils took an ideological choice to freeze council tax for a number of years, rather than increase by a nominal 1 or 2% per year, an increase the public would barely notice.

The impact of that, and the lack of subsequent compound interest on those increases, combined with reduced government funding to local government, has a direct link to shrinking services as local government had to make decisions on what the real service priorities are. The ridiculous pothole problem directly links to this.

At the same time as this, costs for social care have gone through the roof due to an aging population, and so even more difficult decisions need to be made on what the spend priorities are.

That's their favourite bait-and-switch. Move loads of things they used to manage over to councils, make it hard for councils to raise tax rates and then when services are overwhelmed they can blame taxes and say that the councils can raise tax rates if needed, knowing damn well they can't raise them enough because it'll just get vetoed.

Indeed. The tax take and spend in the UK is lower than most similarly developed countries. But we seem to have wholly swallowed the purely US concept of taxes always being too high and something to be cut.

And even then the US government has borrowed to spend on infrastructure and other public spending. Our eye-watering borrowing over the last 15 years or so has gone almost exclusively towards bailing out companies and protecting shareholders with a lot of incidental filling of pockets by all involved.

Privatise profits and socialise the costs – and it’s easy to see why even our low spend ends up barely propping up services, infrastructure and the underprivileged rather than delivering value for the country and its long-term good.
