Montreal is cool, it's probably the more European feeling part of Canada I've visited, although of course their idea of old is very different to ours. Some nice, cobbled, Parisian feeling parts of the city, I would recommend Atwater as an area to explore, it's quite hipster and there's a cool food market there too if that's your thing. Also had the best Poutine ever around there. It was nothing fancy, kind of fast food diner place but claimed the best in the city and I would have to agree.
Head up to the cafe at the top of Mount Royal park too if you have time. Obviously free to do (it's actually a bit of a climb, more than I gave it credit for) but you'll get good views of the city from up there and the park itself is nice.
The Cloakroom is good for a drink. Nice little cocktail bar, a touch on the expensive side but they'll look after you in there.
EDIT: Yes, you'll hear a lot of French, but you will have no issues getting by in English. I did jump in a cab once and was surprised he didn't seem to speak a word of English, unless he was just being awkward, but that wasn't typical.

I am actually going to Montreal, to answer the other replies. I assumed that people would be mature enough to ignore what the acronym spells out. Looks like I was wrong.
