No need for a new CB now? 17:20 - Aug 24 with 2899 views | cbower | Bear with me. Have to assume Williams is here to play. Can't see him dislodging Davis any time soon (although insurance against losing Davis in January maybe?). Managing Clarke's injury maybe opens up a berth on the right rotating with Clarke who becomes defacto additional central defensive cover with Edmundson? It seemingly has nothing to do with Donacien's injury as it's been on going since the Sunderland game at least. Just a striker for me needed now.

No need for a new CB now? on 17:35 - Aug 24 with 2723 views | jayessess | Even if you take the whole backline as a unit, we're one defender out, one defender in. I don't see that Williams changes that. If we were one short before, we're one still one short now.

No need for a new CB now? on 17:47 - Aug 24 with 2645 views | BigCommon | We've got , Burgess, Wolfy, Edmundson, Baggot, Ball, JD and I think Williams and Clarke can play CB in a crisis.. We don't desperately need a CB, imo.. Unless it's a " massive" upgrade on those mentioned. Can't see us spending the cash needed for that. So, possibly a really cheeky Prem loan , somehow... Would like another attacker addition. Be that a 10 or a 9... But, again, we have currently five players in the squad that can play in the 9 role. Albeit , they are all stylistically different in, Hirst, Ladapo, Jackson, Broadhead and Chaplin..

Of course you're right with the maths but the dynamic of the players has changed. Williams is here to play. We did not pay good money for a very promising Clarke to have him permanently benched. Wolf, Burgess, Edmundson with Clarke and JD and even Ball as possible cover (and right now Baggott is still here) is that not enough?

Williams is 5'7 so can definitely not play CB, we only really have Burgess for LCB,I can't remember, Is Baggott left footed? Clarke has played LB so not sure if he can fit in at LCB if required But I'd be much happier with a stronger backup/ starter for LCB

So far we've not entered "massive upgrade" territory - unless you include Hirst on account of him only now actually being ours. Though, of the 8 you name, only the first three are currently bona fide championship CB picks. We're not going to see a 5ft 7ins Williams at CB. Putting that together, I think that we might get a CB who, quality-wise, is on a par with, say, Taylor, who adds to the depth and saleable resources of the club.

Think Williams is a couple of inches taller than that at least - the height on the stats sites are often out by quite a bit. About as tall as OGS here and he is taller than 5'7. https://imageio.forbes.com/specials-images/imageserve/1186721431/Manchester-Unit Baggott is left-footed and Fridge has played multiple times for us at left back. If he gets back to his pre-injury form you would imagine Fridge is first to take over from Burgess if necessary.

No need for a new CB now? on 18:10 - Aug 24 with 2443 views | the_toff | I personally think that's where Clarke's long term future is anyway, this signing might just expedite that. I don't buy this need for a central defender. If there's someone who will strengthen us then great, but that has to be true of every position. We've currently got very versatile defensive options that include Davis, Williams, Clarke, Woof, Edmundson, Burgess, Donacien, and to a lesser extent Ball and young Elkan. 7 + 2, most of whom can cover multiple positions. Any more defensive additions are a want, if available and at the right price, certainly not a 'need'. The pressing one is a forward. Hirst can't do it all himself and Ladapo probably isn't at the level we need to be an upper side at this level.

It's called squad depth. We spent £1.5m on Taylor and he's currently starting games on the bench. I doubt anyone is brought in with any guarantees. McKenna strikes me as the sort of manager who would be honest and say we have a very strong LB so you might find more opportunities on the right and you will need to earn your shirt.

I think Edmundson would be fine there with a bit of confidence and more importantly, fitness. There seems to be a bit of a myth that he's become a poor player, he was very good on the whole when he played last season, including against Rotherham in the cup.

Didn't realise he was a short arse, so I spose you could scrap him from the "towering CB" list then. But you could add Davis to the list of possible CBS in a crisis... I know it's all opinions, but personally, I'd like to see Baggot in and around our first team. Rather than bringing in someone who is not an upgrade on what we've got here already.. And , right now, our current pairing of Wolf and Burgess, have been alright for me. Albeit with a few scary moments.Which you'd expect, as they continue to fully adjust to Championship football..

I like Edmondson , I just feel he's much better and more natural on the rightside, although I would currently choose his experience over the left footed Baggott if required

Williams is only 5ft 7 inches so not a centre back. Sorry that's already been said 😱😡 [Post edited 24 Aug 2023 18:31]

When we signed Clarke I am sure McKenna said something along the lines of… we think we have an idea of where to play him. I thought maybe higher up on the right side but could be he’s looking at a CB role
No need for a new CB now? on 18:39 - Aug 24 with 2113 views | RegencyBlue | In his interview with Town TV Williams mentions on a number of occasions he is here to play games and it’s all about playing at this stage of his career. He doesn’t come across as someone who has been told he’s here as backup or who would be prepared to come here on that basis. Given that, my guess is Davis’s injury is either going to need long term rest and/or surgery and JD isn’t deemed to be good enough to replace him. Williams at right back seems the most likely scenario here.

Lisandro Martínez is 5'7 and he was tremendous as a centre back last season.
