Ipswich Arms and Royal William. Sloanes on Bramford Lane, Rose and Crown and Hare and Hounds. Perfect for breaking up that walk into town for a night out. Earl Roberts behind the Co-op car park in town. Still a gaping space where that once stood. Prince of Orange (Bar Fontaine?)- Quirky place that had telephones on the tables so you could call someone you liked the look of (Please tell me I'm not imagining that)

I think it's a clothes shop now. Used that when we came into town until the missus mobility issues became an issue. |
Wig & Pen, it traded under lots of names though it never could seem to find a formula that worked, good quiz nights though.

Sad to see The Vaults and The Golden Lion boarded up, another of our haunts whilst still at school. Many excellent memories from times spent there. The Duke of Sussex was undoubtedly the weirdest pub in Ipswich, particularly, as you say, if you indulged in the cider. |
Don't know if you were living In Woodbridge at the time but The Stables Club was another good haunt.

Great call on the Albion Mills. Not sure that H&S regulations would pass that music cellar these days!

Best part of the Carib was watching the dudes playing dominos upstairs and them all arguing like Mothers after every lay down.

I was indeed, and you're right, had some great sessions in there, as well as its neighbour, The Waggon and Horses. I spent the whole day, from 11.00 am to 11.00 in there pn the first day of all day drinking. Got a certificate for it!!!

And The Butt and Oyster at Pin Mill was very relaxing as well as having the astonishment of seeing Willie Rushton in a TV advert for Tolly Cobbold outside the place you had the occasional pint in. Fearful amount of drink went over the bar and onto yachts from that pub. [Post edited 14 Sep 2023 13:56]

Another one that got demolished for no apparent reason, some great nights in the Carra club. The Blooming Fuscia was another weird place, only went in a handful of times for a en route beer, but always seemed to be upsetting the bridge players when passers by popped in.

As were anywhere that would have us - several sixth form discos were had in the likes of the Thomas Eldred, the (Un)Safe Harbour and Hoofers (we were at Westbourne), as well as the obligatory Trader Jacks and Hollywoods. Always liked the White Horse in the 90s - Christmas Eve in particular always used to be decent. Went in the Hare & Hounds once - didn't make the same mistake again. Queens likewise, and it was an ITFC top boys stronghold a few years later in the late 90s. In the 00s, I always liked Churches - is that still open?

Churches closed about 5 or 6 years ago. Used to enjoy a pint of Hoegarden in there. Trader Jacks was a Friday night staple. Used to get really busy in there pre-Hollywoods. Don't remember it being open prior to Monday's when the Punk/Grunge/Goth nights were on but then again, maybe I didn't look. Eldred was a decent estate pub. Far better than somewhere like the Flying Horse over Whitehouse. Hare and Hounds was ok for what it was and was way overblown in terms of Ipswich's 'toughest' pubs. The only time I felt unsafe in there was when Cambridge decided to rearrange it in the 91-92 season. I forgot about the Newt. I spent a lot of time in there myself during the 90s.

Maybe that was why! Malt Kiln was another regular haunt. On a Thursday for some reason. When the waterfront bore no resemblance to now.

On the subject of pubs. How about ones that are no longer around that you miss? on 18:20 - Sep 12 by thebooks | You’re not. Bar Fontaine (with the phones) was a different beast from the Prince of Orange, which was a very good bar if I remember rightly. The White Horse was fairly grotty by its end, but in the late-80s a good indie hangout pre-Olivias and Cindy’s. The Bell was horrible around the same period, but quite fun as the landlord would be so drunk he’d fall asleep behind the bar and you could help yourself. Blades had its uses. |
White Horse > Olivia’s/Cindy’s was very much a regular for me 87-89. The docks was just starting to take off too, although I can’t remember the name of wherever we used to go - it was split level with a raised area towards the back. There was another popular place somewhere around Elm Street or Princess St too. I want to call it the Slug and Lettuce, but probably getting muddled up with the more recent chain - it had a similar type of name anyway. Lol, I’m not good at this! Edit - it was the Newt and Cucumber! Is that still going in some form, or long gone? [Post edited 14 Sep 2023 20:25]

I make you a year or so older than me then, as my regular Olivia’s/Cindy’s years were 88-89. Perhaps we crossed on the journey from The White Horse. I hope there’s a similar haunt for kids now: DJ Bruce nights were great; you’d get to hear stuff like Pixies when they were new, and then move on to dance stuff, hip hop; anything decent. The Malt Kiln on the docks, I think. They’d just been done up a bit. Hollywoods on a Monday, of course.

The Stable was part of The Waggon and Horses, or at least it was in the early 1970’s when Maurice and Denise Ramsey ran it. Going back to the OP on this thread, my ex brother and sister-in-law had The Royal William in the mid/late 1970’s.

Yep that was it, the Malt Kiln. And of course Hollywoods - it was an institution. I’d go on indi night with 6th form mates and then occasionally on a Saturday or other nights with football team mates - 2 very different experiences, but all good fun.

I used to drink the Royal William occasionally as I lived around the corner from it and then girlfriend lived a couple of streets away. This would have been 1974-75 ('ish) and we would go there for a break from The Swan, Crown and Anchor, Vaults etc. (and as an escape from the walk into town.) Often had live Country and Western on. Never went in the Ind Coope pub (Ipswich Arms ?) up the road though.

Still going as far as I know and presumably still a lively music venue. It was the Steamboat Tavern in the 1860's when it was refused a spirit licence. Was the Steamboat Tavern when I first went in around 1985. Between those two dates? No idea.
