On the subject of pubs. How about ones that are no longer around that you miss? 18:11 - Sep 12 with 10766 viewsgainsboroughblue

The two next to each other where Lidl is now. Ipswich Arms and Royal William. Sloanes on Bramford Lane, Rose and Crown and Hare and Hounds. Perfect for breaking up that walk into town for a night out.

Earl Roberts behind the Co-op car park in town. Still a gaping space where that once stood.

Prince of Orange (Bar Fontaine?)- Quirky place that had telephones on the tables so you could call someone you liked the look of (Please tell me I'm not imagining that)

Ipswich Drinkeries map 1980-2023
Apologies for the self-promotion but if anyone's interrested I created a map of open, closed and renamed pubs to help my memory and to start pub conversations.
Bloody sad to see so many no longer around even since 1980.

If you had told me forty years ago that the Crown and Anchor, Vaults, Golden Lion and Mannings would be closed but The Halberd and The Arboretum remain open I would have laughed in your face. Funny old World.

Is the Steamboat Tavern still in business? It was always a bit detached from the town somehow, being on the Stoke side of the river, and a bit on its own.

Also was it always called that or did its name change? Anyone know?

Used to be run by the gloriously named Val Bint, if I remember correctly.

The Golden Key on Woodbridge Road which became, for some reason, the haunt of my mates and I between 16-18. Cheap beer and darts.

I never knew that was her surname, she was a wonderful stalwart of the, then, depleted Ipswich music scene. Grateful to her for providing a stage for a couple of bands that included family members and also for putting on the ever wonderful Wreckless Eric at the Steamboat - which resulted in my drunken encouragement of his act getting a line in his blog, fame at last.

After the chat about the Steamboat Tavern earlier in this thread I see on the EADT website that it has been included in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2024, the first time it has made it!

She put on a young Ed back in late noughties. When he went big it was, 'What the ginger kid who played in here?'

On Life's A Pitch last week Osman remembered a 'team meeting' in The Ipswich Arms to thrash out a few things. .Players only. Reckon this was 84'ish.

Two pubs I miss are the Fleece in Mendlesham as me and my mates sat behind the pub before we were old enough to have alcohol and you could go to the off licence door and buy a Vimto or a glass of lemonade and sit under cover at a table around the back of the pub and swap football cards or match boxes. Then when old enough for the hard stuff we went inside and they had an inglenook fireplace where you could sit around a roaring fire in the winter whilst having your pint or play a game of darts with your mates. The second pub I miss was the Green Man at Mendlesham Green. Me and my dear old Gran would go for a walk from her home in Mill Terrace on a Sunday and afterwards she'd call in at the Green Man and buy me a bag of Smith's crisps with the little blue salt bag in the packet and a Vimto. Great memories. I'm in my 70's now and still fervently follow the Town although I don't get to PR these days and it's great to see them doing so well.

Its 2nd time its made it recently, maybe 1st under current owners, as I remember having the conversation with a GBG ticker that it was a new pub for them some years back, and I'd assumed it had been in for a while.

When I was in 6th form at Northgate late 70s me and a mate who had a car used to sometimes nip out for 'lunch' at the now extinct Playford Falcon where Russell was often seen leaning on the bar

I used to pop in now and again when I was working out of RAF Bentwaters.

Always thought it was a bit sh1t to be honest with a mad landlady with cr4ppy Staff Bull Terriers.

No atmosphere, weird clientele and everything covered in dust.

Late to this thread but the Dales was my local as a young lad – had a few colourful ups and downs ownership-wise and I'd at least as often head 15 minutes up the road to the Man on the Moon, but it was a stone's throw from our front door and I definitely missed it when it shut ... some good memories.

The one I missed most after leaving Ipswich was the Albion Mills, but that's been mentioned. The weirdest one for me was The Plough at Capel, my Dad's local. Went away to uni mid-80s and Paul Cooper was still the keeper, went back to Capel around 86 / 87 and Cooper was pulling the pints there.

The Earl Robert’s.

Although, I did meet the current Mrs Deano there so perhaps let it go.

I had a friend who lived nearby, so even though it wasn't my local, I used to go there with him for a few years back in the late 70s and early 80s. I haven't thought about it for years, but your prompting brings back good memories too.

well its the same paper who have written an article today promoting a Christmas Fayre coming to Ipswich, and then you read it and find its at Hintlesham Hall... #justsaying

anyway you forced me to check my old GBGs to double check :) and yes it was in the 2018 and 2019 editions, so 2017/2018 as its like FIFA the date is a year ahead of when its published.

so definitely not the first time the pub has been in the guide, absolutely the first time the current landlords have been as its changed ownership/landlords since 2018.
