More bizarreness from Tory Party Conference. When did 'jokes' just become blatant lies?

And, like a large number of Tories, he was fond of occasionally turning out to defend Putin. Although unlike the Tories he appears to have been doing it for free.

Do you have an example of him "defending" Putin?

For the average UK resident, almost certainly not.

Russia has shown us how united NATO needs to be though and would imagine Ukraine would be in a much worse position if we elected Corbyn.

The UK has led the way on several key issues for Ukraine. They would not have our tanks or Storm Shadow missiles. Obviously the US has led the effort and i'm not claiming otherwise but the UK has been one of Ukraine's closest allies. I dread to think how it would be playing out with a divided NATO and Corbyn likely encouraging Ukraine to the negotiating table to give up territory.

It wasn't so long ago you were warning us about the existential threat of Corbyn.
Is what we have now any better than what that would've been?

we know exactly what he would have done because the prophet has spoken. to quote the guardian:

"Corbyn, by contrast, has urged western countries to stop arming Ukraine, insisting that providing weapons will only prolong the conflict. “Pouring arms in isn’t going to bring about a solution; it’s only going to prolong and exaggerate this war,” Corbyn said in an interview with a Beirut-based TV channel last August."

your only possible defence of him is that the rest of the plp would have had to unite to kick the old twerp out.

It's a pointless debate as it's very easy to make such proclamations when in opposition, very different when you're in the hot seat (and you have a government not a dictatorship).

And all this is a distraction. I asked, "Is what we have now any better than what that would've been?" I thought it didn't need saying I meant in this country, but it would be great if people could answer that.

I enjoyed both your puns Glassers, then moved on and asked you a question about something else.

Also, I'm not a professional comedian. I haven't been paid for a single gig yet. Although I have entered a competition (was meant to be last night but postponed due to the train strikes - thanks again, Tories) where the first prize is £150. So fingers crossed!

You say that but I don’t think Corbyn would have been quite as understanding as our politicians in the West were re: the annexation of Crimea in 2014. What was different about that except people saw Putin as someone to woo/keep on the right side of?

And Corbyn is essentially right that a peaceful resolution will only come via negotiation — whether at the beginning, middle or end. And that’s the problem with these proxy wars: they are great for posturing and “defending freedom” but ultimately they often result in many more deaths and trauma over a longer period as the supporters of the war don’t have to fight and die themselves.

There are no easy answers but a challenge to a lot of these norms and self-interested sphere of influence stuff is certainly missing.

“proxy wars: they are great for posturing and “defending freedom”

Definition - a war instigated by a major power which does not itself become involved.

That’s a disgusting comment in my opinion- exactly the sort of narrative pushed by the Kremlin. It implies it’s a war instigated and fought on behalf of the west. It was an UNPROVOKED INVASION by Russia that has seen thousands of Ukrainians killed (not to mention those in the military)

Shame on you and your conspiracy theories.

Stop being ridiculous.

I didn’t say it was instigated by us. It has developed into a proxy war though.

And this Qanon/conspiracy theorist schtick is getting very tired. Ironically, if you could deal with what I write instead of whatever fantasy is floating around your brain then perhaps you wouldn’t get so agitated.

This is an alternative view on Corbyn being pro-Putin which is well worth reading in full.

https://www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/russia-ukraine-war-jeremy-corbyn-right-put

But whatever one's views on Corbyn, your point about the Tories is a good one, as evidenced by this extract from the article..

"Let’s imagine that Corbyn had somehow won the last election. That he had then filled up Labour Party coffers with Russian money; that his party chairman had an office in Moscow to advise oligarchs; that Corbyn personally had repeatedly visited a Russian oligarch whose father had been a KGB agent and close friend of Putin, and that he had been reported to have ignored security service objections to secure this friend a peerage, and funnelled government money towards his paper.

For day after day there would have been front-page denunciations of Corbyn. He couldn’t have survived. In my view rightly so. Yet Johnson is the one who’s done all of these things. But Corbyn is the one who’s supposed to be pro-Putin."

And don't forget this all happened after the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014.

Your emphatic put own got me reading on whether this is a proxy war or not. It turns out that:
'... the question of whether the war in Ukraine is a proxy one is not only a Russian government propaganda claim: it’s but also a subject of genuine academic debate.'

https://www.kcl.ac.uk/is-the-war-in-ukraine-a-proxy-conflict

Some other good links:

https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2023-02-21-expert-comment-no-proxy-war-russia-really-i

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/04/18/russia-ukraine-war-u

I guess we'll have own opinions - for me, its a defensive war, instigated by Russia's invasion and only fought as long as Ukraine wants to continue doing so. Ukraine is being helped by the west but with strict rules about how those weapons can be used, so i wouldn't call it an attack on Russia so again not war by Proxy

Interesting how the claim that it might be a proxy war seems to largely be propagated by Putin and right wing Americans, like Trump and co.
