Hang on. You are attacking a British Jewish woman because she hasn’t expressed empathy with Palestinian people.

Why am I not surprised?

She seems to have a lot to say.
What has being Jewish got to do with ability to show empathy or even just concern about the plight of others?

Ps....you are very good at throwing inappropriately emotive words like "attack" into your posts. Very odd.

This was a sudden attack by the Palestinian government on Israeli territory against Israeli citizens.

Whatever you think about the situation in Israel, the actions of Hamas today were reprehensible and will do far more to damage their cause than help it.

The status quo? So apartheid?

Indeed.

As you say, there are only losers on both sides. Well, apart from the fundamentalists who lead both sides.

But in recent years our and the US’s strategic support for Israel and lack of concern for the occupation and oppression of millions of Palestinians has emboldened the fundamentalist settlers and the far-right regime now in power and worsened the situation on the ground. The two-state solution is now pretty much dead and we stood by and watched it happen.

These attacks from Hamas are horrific and so is the ongoing apartheid oppressing millions of innocents. It would help all those caught up in this and facing increasing danger if we weren’t so eager to support one side and worsen the issue.

Personally, I think we need to get the UN or a similar humanitarian and peace-keeping force involved. Or at least start talking about this and threatening real sanctions. And let the current Israeli government know that their sovereignty doesn’t extend to illegal occupation and crimes against humanity. Also letting Hamas know that they’re no freedom-fighters if they want to make this a holy war and keep terrorising millions of innocents. But we need those currently calling the shots to be sidelined and more objective, peace-seeking people in charge.

I don't take sides in the conflict (and obviously condemn what happened yesterday which is tragic), but what has been going on in the area in recent years has to be seen in the context of the following from Human Rights Watch, which doesn't confine its criticism to the Israeli government, and because it is from last year doesn't reflect the recent change in government and the recent uptick in the killing of Palestinians.

"Israeli authorities are committing the crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution against millions of Palestinians. For over 55 years, Israel has occupied Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, relying routinely on forcible displacement and excessive force. In the West Bank, authorities have facilitated the transfer of over 700,000 Israeli settlers, a war crime, confiscated vast swaths of Palestinian land, and made it nearly impossible for Palestinians to build in much of the territory without risking demolition. Israel severely restricts the movement of people and goods into and out of Gaza, with devastating humanitarian impact. The Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza arbitrarily arrest dissidents and torture Palestinians in their custody."

I should add that Egypt is also involved in the blockade of Gaza, so must share some of the blame for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Where have I said that I support this? I stated in another thread that there is only losers in this conflict. My point is and always has been, governments covering their eyes to human rights abuses and deliberate breaches of internatiional laws. Then, when the inevitable happens, unwavering support for the oppressor.
Anyway, I'll leave it there.

You raise an uncomfortable truth.

But a critical one for trying to understand a conflict which is based on oppression of an entire people. And increasing occupation to the point of driving them out entirely.

We need to face up to that for our own sake but also the millions of Palestinians and Israelis who we put in jeopardy by allowing this to escalate.

Good post Koonters. I think an independent peace keeping force would be a great way forward in this conflict

Noggin has a point here. Up to September this year the Israelis had killed 200 Palestinians against 30 Israeli deaths. Who spoke up about this? Israel has subjugated the Palestinians, bulldozed their houses and stolen their occupied lands with settlers. What would you do if you were a young Palestinian treated like this and offered no hope of change?

Yes war is barbaric but the root cause of this is pretty clear and it rests with the Israelis. Not with all Jews but with Israelis.

I 100% condemn the actions of Hamas. Innocent lives are being lost due to the actions of both sides, in a conflict where there can be no winners.

Incredible that a few of you have done the both sides thing a few hours after the slaughter of hundreds by Hamas, shameful but not particularly surprised giving the crap that some posted when it comes the Jewish community on this board.

Families have been taken hostage and are still being butchered alive by a terrorist group FFS and instead of instantly condemning it’s a thread about foreign policy with language like “inevitable”

It’s pretty disgusting and offensive stuff.

I’m not going to drag myself into a macro level foreign policy debate when 600+ people have lost their lives to a terrorist organization. Funnily enough I’m more concerned about people I know and work with over there.

However, people like you whose first thought is to post using language like oppressors and inevitable a few hours after the attack and only condemning Hamas when you get called out says all we need to know about you.

Nasty piece of work doing that in the immediate aftermath. Have some respect.

There is an element of "Well, they started it!" from both sides which doesn't help.

Israel need to withdraw to the internationally recognised borders.
Palestine should be allowed to build their own state.
Neither country should operate in each other's territory, unless specifically requested or permitted by the other
International peacekeepers need to be admitted into both countries.

But the hardliners have taken over both territories and it suits outsides to keep the war rumbling on.

And the narrative about who the 'bad guys' are also gets taken up in different ways by different international news organisations. The BBC are reporting the deaths of both Israelis and Palestinians, but the cumulative death count of Israelis over the years, AlJazeera are reporting the deaths of both Israelis and Palestinians, but the cumulative death count of Palestinians over the years...

Yep, some very unpleasant posters defending terror attacks by Iranian armed and funded groups. Just as Israel, Saudi and others are forging peace and trade links together, Iran steps up it's campaign to dislodge the progress.

Sad to see so many hard-of-thinking westerners uncritically accepting and repeating Hamas propaganda.

And defending celebrations of this in London.

I don’t recall seeing anyone celebrating in the streets when Israel gets heavy handed in striking blows to the other side.

An increasing amount of people don't think for themselves, they follow their political ideology. Some on the right will agree with something if the Daily Mail supports it, some on the left will disagree with something if the Daily Mail supports it. What "it" is becomes pretty much secondary.
