Great Players, good managers. 11:12 - Oct 30 with 3131 viewsGeoffSentence

Prompted by this line in an EADT article about Harness that ended up reflecting on our upcoming game with Brum

"Great players don’t make good managers. Fact. "

I was wondering is that true? Sweeping statements like that are often bollox and I reckon this might be one of them. Of course it depends on who you inlcude as a 'great players', Sir Alf and Sir Bob were both international players, but would you call them 'great players' for instance.

Anyhow, I reckon Johan Cruyff at least proves that statement to be guff. Undeniably a great player and has massive success as manager of Barca.

Any others?

Hoddle maybe.

I do think most great players don't become great managers. Bryan Robson. Roy Keane. Steve Gerrard. Bobby Charlton.

Surely in Tabb’s case it’s a question of ‘do occasional tables make good managers?’

Clearly not.

Probably work out well for him. Management can be a bit of a roller coaster.

He probably doesn't make the minimum height requirement for it.

There’s a numbers thing at play here. At any given time there are lots more players than managers, and great managers usually have longer careers than great players. So although “great” is subjective, I suspect most of us would struggle to name as many great managers as we could great players. Ergo there’ll be loads of great players who don’t become great managers, just as there’ll be loads of rubbish players who don’t make great managers.

Best home game we played under McCarthy. We were terrific that day and for Tabb to score with a header was an ‘I don’t believe it’ moment. Classic.

No one has mentioned a certain England International named Robson as yet.

Not Bryan....

Ancelotti could play a bit, 20 odd caps for Italy. Zidane didn't do too badly for himself at Real Madrid either.

Hard to say as historically great players have always been able to get a shot at management fairly easily should they wish, so some of them are bound to do alright. Keane, Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Shearer, Ince. Countless others, whereas the McKenna's of the world generally need to earn their stripes and prove themselves a little more.

Zagallo, won the World Cup as both a player and manager.

Depending on your definition of great, Mancini and Simeone as well.

Another one, Deschamps as well.
