Think that was

We hate Nottingham Forest
We hate Arsenal too
We hate Man United
But Ipswich We love you

'From the banks of the River Orwell' was the best though .

That was to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory wasn't it? Wonder what Forest had done to deserve an entry in line one. Perhaps it just scanned well.

Another favourite of mine.

You are my Ipswich, my only Ipswich,
You make me happy when skies are grey,
You never notice, how much I love you,
Please don't take my Ipswich away.

Incidentally, I think there was much more variety in the songs we sung then.

I might add that I listened to the Fulham game and thought they did have a good variety of songs.

You missed "and blue and white" shoehorned in after the "grey". It always seemed to be sung by an alternative section of the crowd like a call and response.

John Bond John Bond shags his son. John Bond, shags his son.

We're on the march with Robson's army
We're all going to Wem-ber-ley
And we'll really shake them up when we win the FA Cup
Cause Ipswich is the finest football team.

Oh me lads, you should have seen their faces
Walking down Portman Road
To see the Robson aces

Paul Mariner, Mariner
I'd walk a million miles for one of your goals
Paul Mariner

You are my Ipswich
My only Ipswich
You make me happy
When skies are gray
You'll never know, dear
How much I love you
Please don't take
My Ipswich away

In your Liverpool slums, In your Liverpool slums,
You look in the dustbin for something to eat,
You find a dead rat and you think it's a treat,
In your Liverpool slums

edit. Best to forget the Ipswich Republican Army

I started going in 1969 and this is an early favourite.

From the banks of the River Orwell to the shores of Sicily,
We will fight, fight, fight for Ipswich til we win the Football League,
To hell with Liverpool, to hell with Man City,
We will fight, fight, fight for Ipswich til we win the Football League,

Our version of this was …
From the doors of the Safe Harbour to the doors of the Blue Coat Boy
We’re gonna drink drink Tolly Cobbold till we drink the b@stards dry
To hell with watneys ale
To hell with Ind Coope too
We’re gonna drink drink Tolly Cobbold till we drink the b@stards dry .

I think what Forest did to deserve it was to have 5 syllables in the name.

This was a straight steal from Manchester United, substituting River Orwell for River Irwell - why do think it references Liverpool and Man City? They still sing it today. Rather we used our own songs.

It doesn't stop it being a good song, and I think you'll find virtually none of our songs are original.

Pretty sure it was " F'kin" Ambulance... Universally sang around every ground in England.

Fulham had more songs than us in last 20 years.

One or two of the old retro songs should make a comeback as they sound so much better than the too quick clappy chants now.

It's just Ipswich Ipswich ad nauseum.... its spine tingling when it used to go right round the ground during our seventies cup runs!

Spine tingling is right - I sitting near the half way line listening to the Town fans who had the Holt End at Villa Park in the 75 semi-final v West Ham and the volume was incredible. Simple to remember a single word and no gratuitous swearing involved.

I was there that day!

Remember walking in a tunnell under the stands, was so packed I couldn't feel my feet touching the ground much and was carried along by the force of the thousands of Ipswich fans compacted in to a small space all pushing and shoving to get in to the stand. Looking back , it's a miracle there weren't more tragedies at football grounds.

It was 81 when he got caught so was either a 2-0 league win or the 1-0 Cup replay win.

It was at the 2 nil win over Forest on 10/1/1981

And a slightly mixed-up version of the lyrics of the song (including "there's gonna be a nasty accident") feature in the opening to this.

In the unlikely event that no one knows the tune, here it is (Still wishing Joni a happy eightieth birthday...):

Although the North Stand didn't dole the tune out with the same finesse. Joni's version was played on the BBC2 Folk Show special about her a couple of weeks ago and someone messaged Mark Ratcliffe with a reminiscence about the song being sung at Roker Park with slightly changed words...and I thought it was just us that sang that one.

Edited for typos
