Old wives tales about pain relief 14:44 - Nov 24 with 5156 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

Anyone know any old wives tales/myths about things that (supposedly) get rid of pain? Daft stuff like licking a toad and healing crystals. I'm writing a thing about mad/funny things people used to do or have suggested, and around the world not just UK based. I've probably got most of the obvious ones from googling, just wondering if there's anything I've missed.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

My mum used to dab any cuts/grazes with TCP - which as anyone knows is more painful than amputation.

It better have prevented infection or else she was just a fully blown psycho.

Oh! It's 'toad' is it?

My Geordie grandmother told me that one many years ago, but I think I may have been on the wrong end of a misunderstanding because of her accent.

By comparison, licking a toad would be a much less distasteful remedy, and one which might actually bring me some relief, without having to go fishing around in the toilet bowl first!

My Grandad used to rub Poitín into arms, legs, backs, necks, you name it, to relieve pain. He would then drink a large measure before putting the bottle away.

Weeing on Jellyfish stings.

Actually reminds me when I, along with hundreds of others got stung by a swarm of Bluebottles in Australia, walked out of the sea and it was like a line of blokes in the north stand gents at half time spraying everywhere.

Also had a grandfather who believed poitin/whisky was a cure all. Even use to dip his fingers into his drink then rub it over babies gums to 'help with d teething'. Have a strange feeling now it was just an excuse for a afternoon drink or 2

My mum used hydrogen peroxide for wounds which is also a little painful and makes the wound bubble.

She also used witch hazel for bruises, and I remember her using bread poultice for inflamed or painful parts of the body (boils spring to mind).

And there was a whisky "toddy" for colds, which at a pretty young age put me off whisky for life.

Keno tried that... Wes wasn't happy, and Penny wasn't available to comment about the swelling.

My mum used butter on burns - you could hear the sizzle. She also smeared some on my head when I cracked it open once. Bread poultices for swelling and boils. Olive oil only had medicinal uses, for loosening bowels or earwax. Whisky for toothache.

I was told that putting toothpaste on spots or acne is good.

Not sure if it works as I have never had spots.

Honorable mention to the healing powers of old school Lucozade, wrapped in the orange cellophane for medicinal purposes. You knew you were properly sick if your mum got that out.
