El Tel was a big part of my childhood memories due to Euro 96.

Great manager and character in English football, probably left the England job too early to be honest, FA were a nightmare to work with for him. They got their man Hoddle in and we whimpered out of World Cup 98. At least they changed the culture of the English team though…. It’s lead us to huge success since!

Very sad. Loved his Crystal Palace team in the early 80's as well.

Just saw this on twitter, which brought a lump to my throat.

That Holland game.
Just wow.

Euro 96, the last time it was fun supporting England. Packed pubs and great atmosphere. RIP Tel.

Lucky enough to meet him a few times. A gent who just loved to talk about any football. Sad loss.

Good manager, always thought he seemed a bit of a 'lad', which the FA doesn't like.

Such a great manager and one of those coaches that players love to play for. A genuinely top manager and person, a really sad loss. RIP El Tel.

A very bizarre description of the 98 World Cup. Hoddle hardly the FA going for the establishment candidate, even before he went and talked himself out of a job.

His England team felt like the birth of the modern English team. That game against the Netherlands, I'd never seen anything approaching that from an England team in my lifetime at that stage.

I also enjoyed his punditry, he seemed like the kind of guy you'd enjoy going down the pub with.

Very sad to hear this news.

I was in The Long Bar in Great Yarmouth the day we beat Spain on penalties. The atmosphere in there that day was unbelievable.

I was at Wembley for the semi-final. The atmosphere was incredible, and the noise, never experienced anything like it before or since!

Was too young to remember Italia 90, so for me 96 was the first real tournament in my life time after the Taylor debacles. Some great memories and still remember the first (unfortunately of many to come) football heartbreaks with England and Town. Pretty sure the BBC credits rolled to the La’s walk away after the penalty shoot out.

RIP.

Was at the Holland, Spain and Germany games, what a summer. Scotland tickets were impossible to get hold of sadly.

Highlight for me was looking at the 4.0 score on the scoreboard vs Holland and taking a moment thinking wtf is going on?

Also cheering the Dutch pulling one back, knowing it meant the jocks were going home.

My favourite story of our Scottish cousins were the 2 guys at the England v Brazil QF in Japan 2002.

In the middle of the England members section, kilts, Brazil shirts with "Scotland reserves" written on the back.

No one laid a finger on them, most just shook their hands and said "You've got some balls"

Fiik how they got tickets

RIP Terry Venables
...his England were fabulous to watch during Euro96 despite his reputation
...(as was Bobby's at Italia90)

Remember reading somewhere of Bobby's recollection of filming a Walkers crisps TV ad as an angel & Terry as a devil, where Bobby said to Terry something along the lines of "yeah, they've got this about right!"
