favorite cheap meals? on 16:22 - Jan 8 with 1343 views | tonybied | Download yourself the Too good to go app. You can get food going out of date from supermarkets and left over food from restaurants for cheap prices. It just usually requires a trip to the shop or restaurant just before closing time. If you manage to get restaurant food at least you don't need to pay for the energy required to cook too, if you really are struggling. [Post edited 8 Jan 2024 16:23]

favorite cheap meals? on 16:27 - Jan 8 by NthQldITFC | You haven't told your house who you support then? Jacket potato with tuna/mayo and some broccoli. Scrambled egg on toast / Garlic tomatoes on toast. Home made veggie soup - just whizz up whatever's to hand with a blender, making sure you've got a spud or two and an onion in there. With toast! Not forgetting baked beans on toast. If you are bored with the standard beanage you can always zip em up a bit with chilli powder and black pepper. Baked bean soup is good too. 1 tin of BBs, 1 tin of tinned tomatoes, some 4oz celery chopped, onion chopped, teaspoon mixed herbs, teaspoon chilli powder, clove of garlic, pint of stock, pepper. Bung on the stove to simmer 30 mins, job done. Enjoy with bread (preferably fresh and not that whole grain rubbish with trill in it) and real butter. Not that rancid spreadable oilslick in a tub. Enough for three lunchtimes minimum - you’ll thank me for it. [Post edited 8 Jan 2024 16:42]

favorite cheap meals? on 16:43 - Jan 8 with 1251 views | CBBlue | Ham, egg, chips and beans Beans on toast with grated cheese Like others have said batch cook curry, casserole, chili (bulking all out with lentils) and it'll feed you all for a couple of day or freeze the rest. When we don't have enough leftovers for a full family meal my go-to is serve with a jacket potato or make into cornish pasties. When I was a very poor student I lived on marmite on toast...I don't necessarily recommend this though.

I had a mate who had a rough spell unemployed after Uni - he cooked up batches of boiled potatoes and onions to eat for days on end. Now a fairly senior civil service manager.

Mushrooms on toast (ok with a bit of garlic), tomatoes on toast, cheese on toast, sardines on toast, sardine and tomato paste (dirt cheap) on toast. Just about anything on toast works.

Our economic history lecturer told us the navvies built the canals in the 18th/19th century fuelled by a diet of entirely potatoes - about 10lbs per navvy per day.

Perhaps a tuna melt then? Toasted bread with a tuna mayo mix on top with included onion/gherkins/chilli's, with grated cheese to melt on top.

People have survived on pretty much nothing but potatoes for ages. One man ate nothing else (apart from spices and ketchup) for a year.

If you go to a proper butcher, get featherblade or skirt. And for a decent roast, seek out the highly under-rated aitchbone.

favorite cheap meals? on 16:09 - Jan 8 by giant_stow | Funnily enough, a restaurant is the main one - maybe I ought to turn up there with the family wearing rags demanding food? |
Stand your ragamuffin kids outside with begging bowls and signs saying 'we have to beg because this restaurant owes our daddy a shed load of money'. They'll pay up, and the kids will get a couple of nights with Social Services, so win-win for you.
